1973 Wacky Packages Posters release month?
« on: March 01, 2021, 12:04:07 AM »
Does anyone know what month the 1973 Wacky Packages Posters went on sale? Or what month the 1974 Posters came out? Or even between 'which series of stickers' the posters debuted in those years?

Thanks

Todd

I seem to remember this coming up in one of the forums years ago. Even though all the packaging for the first poster series is dated 1973, it seems hard to believe the yellow poster packs were actually sold in 1973, given the presence of titles up to the 8th series. Was the first  poster run the initial release of a lot of these later series titles (before they were sold as normal stickers), or were these packs not in fact sold until mid-1974?

I guess I started a thread about this very topic, though I have zero recollection of doing so. Lots of good info here from collectors who were there....

Never saw the 1973 test posters, but I got chicken pox in July 1974 and my mother bought me a box of the posters as a get-well present. Pretty sure they had just come out either the month before or that month. I should note that Topps had staggered releases around the country so my experience is probably just local to me.

I didn't say much then because I really can't be sure, but my recollection is that I found posters in the summer of 1974, while we lived near Pittsburgh, and I know for sure that my childhood poster collection included cereal titles and at least one replacement title.  By the end of 1974, we had moved to LA, and I don't remember finding posters there.  I can't help at all with wrapper colors.

It doesn’t really answer the question, does it?
the box and wrapper codes are all presented and they drive a timeline.  Everything else is speculation including people who keep insisting that artwork was created in the year it came out....it just isn't true according to David Saunders.  Hoards of art was produced and then released over time.

EDIT: funny I said the same thing 9 years ago!

Why couldnt the posters come before 7th series?  Maybe the posters were the first time those images saw daylight, we need to not assume there is a tight correlation between image creation and sticker series.  Couldnt norm have painted many of these in 1972 and topps just spread them out?

Fun to go back and read these old posts.  So much has happened since then, so I'm glad I posted some of that when my head was clearer.  heh.  But I do still distinctly remember that summer being the "Summer of Wackys", where we saw series 7, 8, 9, and posters & tattoos, all in one summer.  But it might have just been all the BubbleYum and PopRocks in my system effecting my brain.

Q:  How many of you owned Toadal, Cheapios, and Weakies posters as kids?  I had at least 2 of each & thought the replacements were part of a "2nd series" of posters, but taped them to the walls & only ended up with a tiny stack of a few posters in my box of Wackys that I kept over the years.

I had a Weakies poster, and 2 Cheapios.  Since I had an extra of Cheapios, one went onto my bulletin board, with pins at the corners.  About 20 years ago, I traded the poster with the pin holes for a punched set of die cuts (minus Ratz and Cracked).  I still have the other two in my keeper Poster set, along with about a dozen others from my childhood that never saw a bulletin board (I didn't have dubs of anything except Cheapios, so I kept them folded up in my Wacky Kleenex box).  The rest I bought on ebay, or from forum friends.
