Are these people NUTS???
« on: March 13, 2010, 01:43:55 PM »
Wow someone plunked down $86 on a sealed Old School box when you can get them from Topps for $58! I suppose they don't know about the Topps store, but don't they wonder where everyone else is buying them before shelling out this much money?

I wrote to that seller and asked if his box was any different than the ones Topps was selling and if he knew if Topps had them still for sale and he didn't answer my question.

What i find nuts is how cheap this stuff are going for,the sketch cards besides overshadowing the release really hurt the value of the series in my opinion. If you buy boxes and pull common sketchs all your other cards are not worth the price of crap from what i can see.The sketch cards should have only been available to the pre-orders of maybe 1500 boxes max.It would have put some balance into the release.

With a box containing 2 full sets and extras for $40 or $50, I never assumed the sets would have huge value, how did you come to that conclusion and why is it important that the set be "worth" high $?  I felt it was important that they set be of quality, which it was.  I felt it important that we get value for our $, which we did since we get an awesome 5 x 7 trio, 2 complete base sets, a pile of extra stickers, a pile of checklists, logo card, promo card and sketch.  Just break it down, $10 per base set, $10 per trio set, a couple of bucks for the logo and promo cards...hell, the sketch costs us under $20...what's there to complain about?

said this berfore,, being from canada and paying crazy high cost of shipping and ups fee's and then getting stiffed on the free poster i now have over $200 into 3 boxes, sure a rare card of jay's would have made it all worth while but we all can't pull a rabbit outa our ass,but a set of limited run cards should not drop below $20 IMO,,,selling them for $7 w/ puzzle is a crime  :o
next round i'll be buying a single set w/ puzzle for $10 and calling it a day,the bonus extra sh!t don't really do for me anyway

Ok, I understand your frustration, I though you were talking about normal set of events with standard costs, standard shipping and getting your poster.  You are speaking to your set of circumstances.  You really don't like the 5x7s?  The set, 5x7's and sketch is all I needed, everything else were throw ins for me.

First, I don't understand much of the Old School ebay goings on, in light of the current availability of boxes at the ToppsOnline store.

So in short: yeah, people are nuts.   :o

I actually hadn't seen that Old School base sets were selling for $7 on Ebay.. but if that's true, I may actually purchase a few.  Not for investment, but to have more to stick and to share with friends.   I do dig the sketches, and I "value" them for myself and my collection, but I am far more excited about the base stickers.

Also, I wouldn't worry too much about current selling prices for base stickers.  As Old School continues, and we (hopefully) get to Old School Series 6, 7, 8, etc...  the "base set" of series one will become far more important than it seems now.  Much in the way that "chase cards" lose a part of their appeal over time, I truly believe the base stickers in the Old School set will find their appeal increasing.

At somewhere under 8,000 base sticker sets printed, that's a pretty limited release.   If "selling prices" is something you care about (and that's cool if you do) I predict that Old School base sticker sets are not going to be selling for $7 for long.

there is always something special about first series.  ANS1 will always be my favorite.  I am unfamiliar with the ANS market but I assume ANS1 prices are pretty decent.  This Old School series will be special to me more so than next releases even if the next releases somehow blow this away.  Just something very nostalgic about it already.

I totaly agree on both points! ANS 1 is deffintly my favorite of the ANS, but "Canibals" (Shrunken Noodle Soup) is my favorite ANS title...Hillarious!!!

If this isn't nuts then I don't know what is. The seller listed the same shitty Ajerx sticker 26 times and Nertz about 12 times.

how can you go wrong when additional shipping is less than a penny? I'm tempted to win multiple auctions just to hold him to his word on that.

I saw that too.  I emailed the person and asked them if they were aware of it.  I'm not sure how you could list the same auction 26 times by accident.

looks like most of the auctions were changed to other items, but still a few "ajerks" on there.
and additional postage is still a steal at .99 cents.
I guess he is like Verizon, and doesn't understand that .99 cents ≠ .99 dollars

I like Michael and have done business happily with him many times. However, this auction typifies the silliness of using PSA population reports to conclude a given wacky is rare.

http://cgi.ebay.com/1974-Topps-Wacky-Packs-SUNSTROKE-PSA-8-tough-Centered_W0QQitemZ220583584306

So no one bothered to submit many Creature Crackers. That makes it rare? I have at least 2 copies that are sure PSA 8's.

I'll bet I have PSA9 gradable middle series given that I got mainly 8's and a 9 when I sent in my batch of series 1s.  I just have to get motivated to pull everything and start sending some of it in.

WOW! This guy really knows his Wacky's.
Note: From John Kapera, a Lot of Early Non-Sport cards That I’m listed should of been professionally graded so yes I know it, these are scarce cards because kids used these stickers on everything and even me when I sold Comic books My boxes were covered with Stickers as were other dealers and collectors no one knows how few early stickers there really are left they even made sticker books I predict in the next ten years the cards I’m selling will go up a whole lot and when it comes to collectibles I’m usually right. Let me add on Quality Promo & Insert cards is a Giant sleeper, price guides haven’t changed there price in years, no one knows how many cards are left most were pitched, most price guides says $2.00 that don’t mean it’s true the price guide won’t tell you were you can find it for $2.00

Yes! They should be professionally graded! I love the line about most price guides say $2 but that don't mean it's true...LOL
