What Else Do We Collect?
« on: July 20, 2021, 08:50:37 AM »
I am guessing that many people on this forum collect something in addition to Wacky Packages. If you like to buy, collect, and pore over one thing, you might like to buy, collect, and pore over another type of items. I know I have collected comic books for 46 years. What other types of collections do forum members have? How is collecting other items different from collecting Wackies?

I collect Shoebox cards from Hallmark, mostly in themes.

Also graphic novels and trade paperbacks from DC and Marvel; with the DC ones mostly being Pre-Crisis series and storylines and the Marvel ones mostly being anything I like from when I was a kid; i.e., around the 1970s. All of it is mostly Silver Age and some Bronze Age.

Here's an example: I first bought Werewolf by Night Omnibus. Then I bought monster characters that were connected with that series: Man-Wolf: The Complete Collection, Tigra: The Complete Collection and The Monster of Frankenstein. My next purchase will hopefully be Morbius the Living Vampire Omnibus. I'd like to get something containing both The Tomb of Dracula and Dracula Lives!, but Essential Tomb of Dracula greatly altered the stories in The Tomb of Dracula magazine #1-6 and I don't know if any other publication of the series - i.e., The Tomb of Dracula Omnibus and The Tomb of Dracula: The Complete Collection - has done the same thing. Can anyone tell me if Marvel has done this to these books as well?

I collect dinosaur cards, postcards, playing cards, stamps, and Boy Scout patches with dinos on them.

I also collect most other parody/satire/spoof card sets, candy containers, and misc.

I also have a time machine collection which consists of a display case full of toys, replicas, and models,  of various time machines from movies, television, books, etc. I try to find one item to represent each time machine. You would be surprised how many different ones there are when you start listing them. My biggest dilemma... is the monolith from 2001 A SPACE ODDYSEY a time machine?   I have one in there just in case.

My main hobby is Star Wars toys. I have all the vintage figures and most of the modern ones.
I also collect Star Wars, DC and Marvel trading cards and comic books.
Otherwise, I still buy hard media like CDs and Blu-Rays

Too much!

I have sci-fi toys and action figures, diecast stuff, all kinds of non-sports cards, and comics and graphic novels.  Tons of sci-fi books and magazines, including fan produced stuff from the 70's.  I need to get some of this out of the house, and have been trying!!

I’ve collected a variety of things over the years, but I switch on and off from one thing to another, rarely focusing on more than a few things at any given time.

-Sportcards, vintage sports magazines and programs, photos, ticket stubs
-Non-sport cards (including Wackys of course)
-Comic Books (mostly Bronze Age Marvels), MADs, MAD paperbacks and anthologies, horror movie magazines old and new
-Coins and currency
-1970s-early 80s comic strips (Sundays and dailies), paperback books with reprinted strips
-CDs & DVDs, though at a much lower volume in recent years

That covers most of the major stuff.  Some things are tough to decide whether I’m a collector or just a user/acquirer.  For example, do I collect books or am I just a reader focusing on certain subject areas?  I guess if it’s a how-to book on home repairs then I’m a reader, but if it’s an Overstreet price guide I’m a collector lol.

Like RawGoo, I collect too much!

Besides Wackys and almost all Wacky knockoffs I collect sports cards.  I just finished my 1972 Football, and I've got about 50 cards left to finish the 69, 70, and 71 sets.  I was working on 1972 Baseball, but it's just too hard to get the 5th and 6th series cards at a decent price.  I have the 1973-77 sets in both of these along with Basketball too.  I think once I finish these last three sets, I'll quit.

Weirder things are
Baseball and Football Slurpee Cups from 1972 and 1973
Coca-Cola Memorabilia (mostly miniature bottles and clocks)
Swatch Beach Volleyball related watches (Swatch was a sponsor so there are over 100)
Volleyball Magazines and Beach Volleyball Programs/Press Guides and other related memorabilia
1953 Wheaties Miniature License Plates (recently finished off my dad's collection)
ITTF and USTTA approved Table Tennis Balls (I lost most of my collection because they turned to dust)
Mattel Instant Replay Records (down to just three more)

Those have great eye appeal, similar to vintage firecracker labels.  Only problem is you have to eat $5, $10 or $25 to keep one!  (Unless these are “demonetized” vintage chips you were able to get for less).

I try and pick up each new release in Las Vegas up to the $100. So that way I am paying face value. The obsolete chips shown above are valued over the face value. The top two are in the 4 figures.
These Circa chips below were from a new casino in the downtown area that opened in 2020.

Hi Neil,

Are the mini cameras operable? Are they digital? Way cool!

I would assume so that when they are stacked you can see what denomination they are.

Somewhat operable. Technically, most of them work, but I doubt the pictures would win any contests, lol!

Pretty much everything at some point!

Stamps, Coins, Comic Books, Baseball Cards,  Big Little Books,  Non Sport Cards/Wacky Packages.

In the past year I've bought wacky packages, coins, and and only few baseball cards so would say I'm still active in those. I still love big little books and comics but just don't have enough time and especially money to pursue them. Stamps were my first hobby and probably still my favorite, but stopped collecting any modern material due to overproduction.

As kids my brothers and I used to pool together our Bazooka Joe comics and send away for those little prizes advertised on the comics themselves.  We got quite a few of them, but the highlight was the mini camera.  The first time we used it and got back the developed film, there were light streaks across all the pictures.  I guess the body of the camera didn’t seal tightly and there was a light leak (of course none of us knew anything about photography back then to understand what went wrong). I don’t remember using it beyond that first time, but I’m thinking it might have come with some sort of non-standard film type or size where you couldn’t just go and buy more.

Neil - do your minis use standard 35mm or 110 cartridges?

Actually, neither. These particular cameras use a mini cylinder that's about a 1/4" tall (at right). Not very easy to load, but you feel like you've really accomplished something when you get them to work, lol!

So I guess it’s safe to say that collecting vintage mini cameras is only for novelty / kitsch value, with realistically no ability to use them for photography due to obsolete film type.  The only thing I’m seeing in currently produced small cameras are these little colored square ones that spit out mini polaroids, popular with kids.  My daughter had one several years back, but the current ones look smaller.

Could you be a bit more specific about what type of pre-80s trading cards you are interested in?

What don't I collect???!!!
Stamps, mahjong sets, comics, books about comics, vintage dolls, battery op toys, christmas ornaments....
Admire but don't collect coins as they can be so expensive.
I think I would have a pretty nice collection of any of the above if I would have concentrated on just one or two areas, but because I like so many things, I don't have anything show stopping or very extensive.
And then there are Wackys.
More like a packrat collector...

Weirder things are
Baseball and Football Slurpee Cups from 1972 and 1973

I also really like certain sports sets and oddball sets that were separate from the basic Topps sets, but during the timeframe when Topps was still the main draw in sport cards.  Examples:

-Hostess Baseball 1975-1979 - very nostalgic about these but chances are slim to none I’ll ever complete a single year’s set, let alone all five.
-Kellogg’s Baseball 3-D / hologram cards - love these too but hard to keep the surface coating from cracking
-Fleer World Series cards (cartoon summaries of each year’s Fall Classic, drawn by Laughlin)
-Sugar Daddy Pro Faces (all 4 sports) - small narrow cards inserted in Sugar Daddy pops.  Only have a few of these from childhood Halloween trick or treating.
-Fleer Team Action / Teams in Action football 1976-1988 -  great action scenes with no licensing issues.  Helmet logos didn’t have to be airbrushed out like on Topps single player cards.  First discovered these as Halloween booty also.  Also had little team logo and helmet sticker subsets for each year.
-7-11 Slurpee baseball discs (hologram)
-Cracker Jack mini baseball
-1982-83 Post cereal mini hockey cards - these were issued in Canada only I believe, each box prize was a cello-wrapped team set, and they were intended to be used as part of a card game of some type, once you got all the teams.  But the fronts still had basic player/action photos.  Only recently learned about them on eBay.

- I've got a few cob coins from 17th century shipwrecks.  Does that count?  Always liked dubloons and pieces of eight.  Just can't afford the gold ones.  But the silver cobs are really cool as no 2 are alike.  Coins made perfectly round are like collecting PSA Wackys where everyone scrutinizes every tiny imperfection & prices get ridiculous at the PSA 9 and 10 level even though they look almost identical to 7 and 8 at an arm's length.  But cobs are like collecting the original art or other ultra-rare items.  If you want the coin with that exact shape, there's only one.  As for other things I collect, though, I got rid of most except for Wackys & related parody cards.  And Star Wars.  And months wasted by the pandemic that I'd like to have back.  And dust.
