Why Weren't These Products Ever Spoofed in the Original Series?
« on: September 16, 2020, 02:19:43 PM »
I just realized that over the last couple of weeks, I've been working on titles that were never done in the original series. So, why weren't these super popular products done back in the 70's???!

Etch a Sketch
Lays Potato Chips
Mr. Potato Head
Burger King
Twizzlers
Slinky
Frisbee
Ring Dings
Drakes Cakes
Tasty Cakes

I'm sure there's plenty more, but these are a few off the top of my head. If anyone wants to add to the list, please do so!

I was always waiting for Spaghettio's - I think that's why I really enjoy the recent parodies of that product, even if the can isn't what I remember.  I remember saving up labels to send away for a bowl with the face at the bottom.

Some others that come to mind:
Pop Tarts (I sent away for toys using Kellogg's points on those boxes, and the boxes were PERFECT to include a Wacky!!)
Doritos
Space Food Sticks
Little Debbie
Sorry!
Clue
Nerf Football
Mallomars
Moon Pies (I figured they'd never get away with the obvious gag!)
Ho Ho's
Mike & Ike

That's what I love about the Old School Series. Vintage product parodies we never got back in the day.

I've got two chewing gums to add to a modern series and two more chewing gums to add to a future 1970s OLDS series:

*Wrigley's Spearmint and Wrigley's Winterfresh (the ANS run has done all of Wrigley's chewing gum brands except these two (Topps, are you listening out there?)),
*Clove and Black Jack (Beeman's was done in OLDS 4; might as well finish the job with these two, just like the two 1970s Pilot Cereals and the five 1970s/1980s Monster Cereals were both finished in OLDS).

Some of these were done later on, but not in the OS -

  Pez
Libbyland's Safari TV dinners for kids (purple milk packet!)
  Mattel's Geetars and Farmer Says
  Almond Roca
  Coffee Nips
Pink Popcorn bricks (maybe that's a local product)
Granny Goose chips (another local product?)
Borden SnowBalls (available only for the holidays)
  Lady Finger firecrackers
Kraft cheese and crackers handi snacks

Some things were regional. Like Tastycake back then would have been a Philly area product.

Wow, that's a lot of titles! Alex, you mentioned Kraft cheese and crackers. There were also Lantz Cheese Crackers.

A few more...
Easy Bake Oven
Luvs
Texaco Oil
Wilson Baseball gloves

Was the Lantz Cheese Crackers exactly the same as the Kraft one? I didn't know about Hellmans Mayonnaise until adulthood - we always had Best Foods Mayonnaise on the west coast, and I believe they are exactly the same product! Another item that didn't make it to the OS?

Actually, it was Lance crackers. The other spelling is actually Walter Lantz of Woody Woodpecker fame.

And you're right - Hellmann's and Best Foods are one and the same product from the same company. The first name was from east of the Rocky Mountains and the second name was from west of the Rocky Mountains. In fact, if you look in the small print on the side of the label on the bottle, it says what it's known as in which region.

Tab was done in OLDS 3 as Bat and Luvs was done in the 1985 series as Lumps.

Right, but I'm referring to the Original series from the 70's (and '60s).

I think Wham-o had enough toys for a whole subset themselves:

- Slip 'n Slide
- SuperElasticBubblePlastic
- Monster Magnet
- Water Wiggle
- Magic Window
- Wizzzer
- Super Ball
- Air Blaster
- Magnetic Gyro Wheel
- Super Stuff

Here's one you forgot: Zillion Bubbles and Monster Bubbles (at least, I think that's Wham-O; I'm not sure).

You're right, and I can recall two products off the top of my head done in the modern run that are regional products:

*MOB Coffee from ANS7 (MJB Coffee; it's a U.S. West Coast product),
*Putrid's Not Goodie from OLDS 4 (Pearson's Nut Goodie; same thing as the first one, but in the 1970s (I don't know if it's still around today, though)).

Btw, did I get the Wacky name right on the second one? If not, please tell me what it is and I'll fix it.

How about Binaca Blast!

I remember the tiny bottles of liquid you shook drops onto your tongue, and I think there was also breath spray, mouthwash, and maybe other products.

Did the OS ever spoof Sen Sen? That's what my mechanical drawing teacher in Jr High used xD

I remember a knock-off product sold in candy stores that was a cheap alternative to Super Elastic Bubble Plastic.  Was in a much smaller tube with the blowing straw taped to it.  Sold for maybe 10 or 15 cents.  Man did that stuff give off some fumes.

Of course everyone remembers Pocket Quarterback, but two toy items I remember obsessing over during the grade school years was 1) Tomy pocket games, various ones, and 2) Wacky Water Writers, a pen with a clear plastic cylinder shaft you’d fill with tap water and would become a game where you’d repeatedly flip the pen vertically and try to catch sinking objects with a floating one.  They would basically pass each other going in opposite directions on each flip.

The list of potential product candidates must still be quite long, as we’ve conducted polls like this several times during the Old School era.  The collective minds here can conjure up a ton of items.

And I just remembered this one: Wacky Water Flashlight! Same thing, but a flashlight instead of a pen, batteries not included (as usual).

The jingle for the second one was "Wacky Water Flashlight! Sometimes it's a light! Sometimes it's a game!" The first one had a similar jingle, but I can't remember what word was said at the end of the second line.

C'mon, YouTube, you're our only hope!

I think this was introduced in the 60s, but who remembers SIXFINGER? A fake finger that shot projectiles. No spy kit was complete without one.

First of all, holy crap that there was a follow-up product with a flashlight, I never saw that.  For all I know the flashlight came first and pen second.  But the jingle was the same, just switch out the product name and description:
“Wacky water writer, sometimes it’s a pen, sometimes it’s a game!”

In this day and age, a product like Sixfinger - that is just wrong on so many levels. I don't think even Topps would do anything that stupid - that'd be like them putting cigar, cigarette, alcohol and medicine parodies in packs they sell in brick-and-mortar stores (and that's not going to happen any time soon, being that that option seems to be as dead as a dodo).

OLDS, maybe, a modern series, never!

A few others - Spirograph, Roman Meal bread, and the game Pick Up Sticks

(I think Pick Up Sticks has good parody potential. Make a pickup truck with sticks. Or a game of Pick Up Bricks, where you compete to assemble a small retaining wall.)
