Rejected Wackys Set (Off the Mark-et)
« on: March 06, 2019, 08:26:14 PM »
Hey all!

I've been busy making a set of some of my rejected Wacky Packages designs. I call the set Off the Mark-et.
It includes a set of 33 cards
A title card
A checklist
A 9-card puzzle
A bonus card donated by Dav Pilkey! (Creator of Captain Underpants, Dog Man)
A color sketch card.

Everything is on acid-free card stock.
I'm taking preorders now for $55 a set (includes shipping). Send me a PM if you're interested.
It was a blast to make, and the first 10 orders will get 2 sketch cards.

So far the only set I've made went to Dav Pilkey and he posted some on instagram. I'm attaching images, including a couple sketches, so you get an idea of the set.

Thanks!
-Mark

Thanks for your pre-orders, everyone! I'll put these together as soon as I can and get them to you. I appreciate your patience, of course. I also have a lot of sketches to do.

If this goes well, I have enough for additional series. Thanks again!

Yes! Even though they are printed, I still consider this pre-sale. Still have collating and sketches to do.
Please gift PayPal $55 to MarkParisi@aol.com and I'll add you!

I believe I was first one to purchase pre-sale series 1, and my goal is to be the first one in for each series. When does the pre-pre-sale for series 2 begin?

Also, do you have an estimated start date for post-sale on series 1?

Looking forward to looking backward at this series!

You weren't the first, but you were in the first ten so you get two sketch cards. Post-sales will start as soon as I ship the pre-sales!

A Series Two isn't certain, but I certainly have plenty to make more series. (If the first series goes over well.)

This thread got me thinking...

It's amazing how just many Wackys are rejected.  And to think that this probably happens to every artist; They all probably have a stockpile of rejected parodies.  They're the new generation of "lost" Wackys.  Granted, these Wackys were rejected for one reason or another, yet I seriously doubt that all were deemed "unfunny," "too coarse," or "disparaging" (to the actual product.)  Some were probably rejected because a similar product was already selected to be parodied at the same time.  Others might have been rejected on the grounds that they wouldn't appeal to Topps' target audience (8 - 10 year olds) and weren't "trendy" enough.  (I could envision this happening in recent years.)  Still others might have been rejected because Topps chose the artist's, say, top three parodies and left numbers four and five to wither on the vine.  It's not that four and five weren't good; They were simply the "unchosen" (leaving the artist to scratch his head in bewilderment.)

Which brings me to my point...

It's too bad Topps didn't file all of these "rejects" away to be pulled out at a later date, say, the year 2019, and issue a standard set of Wackys or a postcard set (both of which are long overdue.)  Instead, we have nothing and Topps makes nothing.   :-\  IMO this doesn't make good business sense.  In fact, it defies simple common sense.

I'm sure we are all grateful that Mark Parisi shared these with us, but it's sad (even tragic) to think of how many other "rejects" must be stored away in filing cabinets, never to see the light of day.

All too true. The vast majority of concepts never see the light of day. In fact, I think the average is like one in five or one in ten. Something crazy like that. I used to print my rejects out in a reference binder (the stack is about 4" high) but I stopped after ANS7, because I ran out of room, LOL. Maybe I'll bring it to Allentown...
