Pretty good Wacky, but I always thought there should have been a tag line about corns, instead of (or preferably in addition to) the "hard as nails".

Nestree and Nestea. Looks like it was based on the Lemon flavored tea on the right side, but the edge of the round box in the center has a brown border on the parody.

Not a bad gag, but I don't get the "insane" tagline.

They were trying to come up with a word that is close to "Instant" I guess. But these birds don't look insane. More like something peaceful from an Audubon painting.

looks like it was based on a version with gold borders. didn't find the lemon flavor after a quick search, but it's probably out there

Yeah, it's kind of funny, my aunt who couldn't live without coffee, and always had a pot ready, also smoked like a chimney, so I got that association.

"Esquire" to "Escuire" appears to be just a simple change of spelling.

The joke is that the shoeless bum with the raggedy top hat, clothes, and umbrella believes he can be just as classy, dapper, and suave as somebody in the upper class gentry simply by polishing his bare feet until they shine radiantly.

In addition to simple, silly gags and wordplay, Wacky Packages at this time would sometimes also poke fun at the different ways that product packaging would lure people in.  The original "Esquire" packaging might have someone believe that they would be "magically transformed" from an ordinary person into an aristocrat simply by applying this polish to their shoes.  Ah, a Cinderella, rags-to-riches story!  Even today, ads pull the same stunt.  Wear such and such makeup, ladies, and you'll melt years off your looks. The sad reality is that, having spent money, the elderly lady is still an elderly lady - just now wearing makeup, and the ordinary working Joe is still an ordinary working Joe - just with freshly polished shoes.

The "Rebell" Model Jet is another example of this expectation VS reality.  I'd be willing to bet that of all the plastic models assembled by people over the years, less than 90% of them actually looked like the picture depicted on the box when they were finished.  Hence, in keeping with "MAD" magazine humor, we get...

With both "Rebell" and "Escuire," a general statement is being made about what the product actually is VS what the company of the product would like us to believe.

Probably my least favorite of the series.  Never saw the product, or got the gag.

I always liked Quit, I think because of the wonderful can and top, not so much for the gag.

Mustard Charge was boring, but had a decent gag and tag lines.  I also liked it because I used to keep one in my wallet, along with my library card and my Burger King issued "driver's license."

I always liked this one, even though it didn't have a character.  I had wondered about the letters and numbers on the top brick, and realize now that the "NBS" is Norm Saunders' initials.  Still not sure what the "00" stands for.

Pat, if you mean after the initials, that is not "00", it is "CO". Short for Company.

Liquid Bomber and Liquid Plumr. Wonder why they didn't spell it as Plumber?

Probably to preempt any claims by disgruntled consumers that the product didn't meet expectations.  If they called it "plumber" you'd have all kinds of nut jobs coming out of the woodwork screaming "I thought this was supposed to be able to do whatever a plumber can do!"  Like a CYA thing.  I've come to notice that many products with chocolate flavor will describe it specifically as "chocolatey".  Cereal being a good example.  Why?  Because there's no real chocolate in it.  It's just "like chocolate."  Similarly, if you go to the deli counter and see "Krab salad", that "K" isn't bad spelling.  It's because there's no real "Crab" in it.

Would have been more appropriate to take the top 50 cards from 1-16 and place the original product on the back of the card with updated artwork for the anniversary set........

Tijuana Smells and Tijuana Smalls. I found two images - one with the accurate lettering and layout, one with the sunset backdrop but funky lettering

"Funky" is one way of describing it!  Talk about a blast from the past!  You definitely don't see lettering like that nowadays!  So 70s!

I always liked this one... perhaps it's the pig luxuriating in hot chocolate swill. Looking at the original product packaging makes me wonder about the line, "Please don't add milk. Just add hot water." Sounds just a little menacing. Just what would happen if you DID add milk?
