"Lost" Wacky Packages set on ebay
« on: May 08, 2012, 07:21:25 PM »
I really don't even know what to call this 8 sticker set, but please take a look:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/LOST-Wacky-Packages-set-Duane-Dimock-Freakie-Magnet-RARE-300-only-120-sets-/370611597640?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item564a2c3148

If anyone has any further info they can provide, please do.  And if you're inclined to bid, please do that as well.

Thanks for looking!

I think you'll do well with that.  That was printed in 2006 at the same time as the Lost Wackys series 1, and was put together by Duane Dimick. He only did 120 sets.  Most of the titles were originally planned for Freakie Magnet inserts like the 3-card set that was released (inc. Brew-Berry, Qwap, & Monkey Arms).

Greg just sold this same set on ebay at auction a couple of weeks ago & they went for just over $300. I haven't seen this set hit ebay in at least 3 or 4 years (or more).

Thanks, Dr P!  It's too bad these weren't released in greater numbers.  Of course, I hope the auction does well, but I'm sorry to see it go.  I like the cereal titles and have always been a huge fan of Funny Face (and I think those two titles are particularly well done).

Thanks, Kook!  Yeah, seeing Greg's auction is what got me to dig these up and list them.  I have no idea, of course, if this will hit $300, and didn't know it's been so scarce on ebay, but I hope both of those factors bode well for this auction.

I had an extra set fairly soon after it was printed and eventually sold it for $75.00, and that's what Duane was selling his extra sets for at the time.  Makes sense that you would get more now because the set wasn't really made public and I still see people today seeing it and not knowing what it is, and by now they are hard to find.  Plus the quality is nice and they are true kiss-cut stickers.

I recently purchased a set, and I agree that the quality is very good. I think the artwork is certainly comparable to the original series & has more of the original series feel than most post 1979/80 wackys overall.

I do think the printing quality is superb.  Though I think the cereal parodies artwork is only average, I love the inclusion of the four monster cereals.  When OLDS gets around to doing the 80's, I hope Yummy Mummy is in the first series.  I'd like to know who did the artwork on the two Funny Face stickers.  I think it's as good as most of the ANS artwork out there today.

If I remember correctly 6 of the 8 titles in that set were entries for the Freakie Magnet contest, so they were done by random artists (or wanabee artists!), so it makes sense that the artwork isn't what we would expect with a retail release.  I'm not sure who did the Funny Face art though.

I have to admit to being a bit befuddled on all these "LOST WACKIES" sets I see on eBay. It seems alternate puzzles keep cropping up for the two LOST WACKIES sets like...
http://www.ebay.com/itm/2008-Lost-Wacky-Packages-2nd-Series-COMPLETE-SET-w-2-PUZZLE-VARIATIONS-rare-NR-/400297832777?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5d339c3149#ht_1263wt_689

And now "unreleased" card variation sets (I thought all this LOST WACKIES stuff was unreleased material).
http://www.ebay.com/itm/2006-Lost-Wacky-Packages-1st-Series-JANITOR-SLUM-Test-Set-5-Stickers-NR-/400297820883?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5d339c02d3#ht_667wt_689

There also seems to be overlap between the Duanne Dimmock set,
http://www.ebay.com/itm/LOST-Wacky-Packages-set-Duane-Dimock-Freakie-Magnet-RARE-300-only-120-sets-/370611597640?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item564a2c3148#ht_500wt_922

the LOST WACKIES 1 and 2 and the X-PACKs set.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/WACKY-PACKAGES-X-PKS-8-CARD-SET-SEALED-WOW-SUPER-RARE-/380439359707?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5893f3f0db#ht_2507wt_689

All this stuff must have had its genesis in the period of time when I wasn't active in WP collecting so I guess I just missed the timeline, why they were produced, what prompted the "R-rated" versions of some titles,
http://www.ebay.com/itm/OVARY-SHOW-Lost-Wacky-Norm-Saunders-X-Rated-Wacky-Packages-/300704396763?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item460360f5db#ht_500wt_922

etc. My guess is that it was before Topps started new Wacky Packages releases and people were hungry for any new WP items at all, licensed or otherwise.

P.s. I am not chastising the owners of the above auctions, simply using them to show the various items I am referring to.

Everything about the Lost Wackys set was an abortion.  From the "make it up as you go" non-profit yet very much making a profit pricing, to the lack of quality control not spotting that Duane Dimock had sabotaged the project to the core concept having no real definition of what a "lost wacky" really is, to the lack of control of selectively allowing people to sell the sets on ebay without being chastised....your confusion is well founded.

The whole "Lost Wacky" thing as well as repro's can be extremely confusing.  Much of the stuff printed up was done "underground" and not made readily to the public, and then you have collectors like Rusty who have done several sets and individual cards from his home printer, and telling them apart without having them in-hand is difficult.

Yep, I'm still never clear on which versions are the 'replacements', and how many and which titles 'belonged' in each set - seems to have varied.

I also have a Gooya kiss-cut sticker that I have no idea about.  It has a copyright at the bottom "M.C. Printed in U.S.A.", and the white backing has multiple faint images of the Gooya can.

That was done at the same time as the Janitor set of 6 and there are 2 versions of it, one like yours and then another as just a blank whiteback.  It gets crazy trying to sort it all out!
