Old School 3 Sketch Spoilers
« on: February 18, 2012, 10:15:14 AM »
I think it's a good idea to isolate the sketch spoilers from the series as we did with OLDS2.
Here are the sketches from Marc Simon's initial 6 boxes:

Whoever that is who drew Slayer, it is terrible.  It looks like a 6 year did it, weak as hell....  :040:

That one was from John Zeleznik.  He's done some postcard sketches and art too.

I think it's an average sketch.  Don't think it's as bad as you make it out to be.  I'd be happy to add it to my collection.

Here are mine:

I don't recognize the first two (left/middle) character; I think they're the same one, but not sure. Anybody? The KFF one, though somewhat crude, is kinda cool. These ARE supposed to be sketches, after all, not final artwork...

See another Zeleznek someone pulled for Kentucky Fried Fingers.   Compare it to the other sketches from other artists so far.  Really?  He thinks he's an artist?  I could do better and I've never drawn as much as a stick figure.  Topps should fire his no talent Arse.

Well, before getting too critical... Have you checked out any of his other works? He is a quite accomplished artist and here is a quote from his website, "Here's a childhood dream to check off the list. Been doing Wacky Packages for the past two series'. This is one from last year and I'm currently working on 5 more for the next series. "

Check out his website:
http://zeleznikillustration.blogspot.com/2007/07/wacky-packages.html

As others have mentioned, please remember these are sketches (by name and original intention at least)... a quick simple drawing. Yes some of the artists appear to spend more time on them than others. Also remember that not all artists excel in all mediums. Someone who is a very good oil painter may not necessarily be as accomplished in pen and ink, for example. I realize artistic likes and dislikes are subjective, but I think its a little premature to call for someone's job based on a few sketch cards you may have seen. Do you know which Wacky Packages titles he has painted? Whats your opinion of them?

I went to the link you provided.  You are right, he is a good artist.  I do stand behind my opinion on the sketches he did though.  A big part of the Old School series are the sketches.  So, I would think the artists would spend a bit of quality time on each sketch.  Let's put it this way, if I pull one of his sketches, and they are anything like we've seen so far, it's going right in the trash...

I like the sketch cards as much as the next guy (as long as the next guy isn't Rob or Brad  ;) ), but I guess they are as big a part of OS3 as one makes them. I look at it like the free toy in a box of cereal back when I was a kid. Not the main reason to buy the cereal but it could sway decisions between two like kinds. If you do pull a sketch of his, let me know... I'll send a SASE that you can throw it away in my direction.  :great:

I don't think "all" you guys really understand what it takes to do sketch cards, just saying. Before you pour hate onto a public discussion, maybe learn a bit about the mechanics, pay scale & deadline imposed before passing judgement on a professional.

Good points. Sketches are an added bonus to any series. A little extra unique gift by the artists. We have seen some artists raise the bar with their sketches. The range could be categorized as follows:

quick line art -> drawing -> sketch art -> work of art.

Some just stay at the quick end of the sketch spectrum. Maybe they don't have a lot of spare time to put into these, or as sco(o)t mentioned maybe it's just not their medium of choice. They are all still cool and worth owning. However, when one pulls a "quick line art" card vs. a "work of art", I can see where it could be considered less than satisfactory.

Were not all the artists on the same pay scale and deadline ?  Also, I'm not "pouring hate".  I don't know the guy, and after going to a website of his artwork, he does some nice work.  I just think if he wasn't going to give his best effort he should have passed on this project.

right, you win, have fun with your...what?

I have seen John's actual paintings for Wackies that resonate as true as a Saunders, and you are going to diss him because your free art isn't what you hoped?
