The beautiful glasswork and the lid on Dave Gross' upcoming Old School title Sue Mee reminded me of how much I love the work of Donald Roller Wilson. To see one of Roller's original pieces in person is breathtaking and I always find it hard to believe it's actually oil on canvas.
Here's one of my favorite Roller paintings.

Take a look at the detail from this painting. The glass ketchup bottle and baby bottle. The ceramic bowl and metal spoon. The age and patina on Patricia's high chair. I never tire of looking at these up close.

I never heard of this artist. I will now! That is amazing. At first I thought it was just a picture instead of a painting.

These are awesome pictures....ummm....I mean paintings. Like Brad, I also thought they were photographs when I first looked at them. I would love to see some in person. Any idea where some of this might be seen? Thanks for posting.

Roller is best known for his monkey stuff. I noticed a place in China is doing what appear to be hand painted knock offs of his work. The deal here is that the painting costs you 99 cents...they ship it rolled in a tube....they charge you $60 for shipping and handling. Shipping is actually about $30 for a large size rolled up canvas painting. So they make their money in the handling charges. Whether these copies are as good as Roller's actual work, I don't know. It seems to me the images here are photos of the actual paintings done by Roller. http://cgi.ebay.com/100-handicraft-oil-painting-A-Lovely-monkey_W0QQitemZ310202130083QQcmdZViewItemQQptZArt_Paintings?hash=item48397cdea3 I'd buy one... But who knows what I'd get. Maybe it would be a really BAD copy. I don't know.

I saw some of his work at the Archer M Huntington Art Gallery in Austin, TX and at galleries in L.A. and S.F.

Roller is best known for his monkey stuff. I noticed a place in China is doing what appear to be hand painted knock offs of his work.
Yeah, he seems to be in a primate phase. He also gained popularity when Frank Zappa used some of his painting for his album covers in the 1980s.

I prefer his non monkey stuff but I'm inclined to pick one of these up to see what it's like.
