Will be great to see all of these!
-
Interesting that two temporary cereal brands were chosen, driven by the ‘latest craze’ phenomenon, reminiscent of ‘91 Gross Blisters and a cereal marketing gimmick still in use today.
-
Got word it goes on sale at noon today EST
-
I will also be offering the same raffle that's done for the last bunch of series. If you purchase three or more of the master set and show me a receipt I will enter you into a raffle (after the 7 day sale is done) for original art!
-
Does this series contain any politics or ANS/GPK type potty humor? That seems to have crept into all the series lately.
-
Nope!

About the Loonies card: Is that a character from a previous Wacky Packages sticker original on it?
-
About the Loonies card: Is that a character from a previous Wacky Packages sticker original on it?
I don’t believe so. I’ve never seen the film, but I know there is a character very closely resembling that on the Wacky. The only embellishment I see is the propeller beanie. Now if you’re asking whether a previous Wacky character inspired that, that’s anyone’s guess. I would say the propeller beanie is too common a prop to read much into it.

The funny thing is, I had two wacky ideas for Orange Julius at the same time. My other rough was "Orange Curious", with a startled guy looking quizzically at this weird creature climbing out of his cup. They both were good gags, but I'm glad Dave went with Furious!
-
Great concept and execution! Perhaps the orange might have been even more furious if the straw was protruding from its eye socket?

Hmmmm... I'm not sure if this is reflective of 1980's Orange Julius packaging. This appears like the 1990's redesign to me, but I'm not certain on it, and could be wrong. Would love to see your reference for this one. [Edit: Just did some digging, and it's looking even more evident that this is a 1990's, possibly early 2000's design. For what it's worth. ]

For the 90s redesign it looks like they made the logo italicized. The straight up lettering was the 80s. Also looks like the 90s got more "festive" The little dots were changed to confetti like triangles and are not arranged perfectly and they put one larger
fruit on the cup (though maybe the other is on the other side, not sure).
-
Did a deep dive and can confirm my suspicions. Here's the accurate skinny:
The actual 1980's design which was still in use into the early 1990's can be seen here in two ads from 1989 and 1991. The version you appear to have referenced to base this Old School design on was introduced no earlier than 1993, so that design came out sometime in 1994-1996, as it was definitely in use by 1996, as shown on the third attachment.

I think that settles it. There's some theoretical wiggle room I suppose, that somehow OJ was using that 1990's design earlier, but it's a deep stretch. Unless you've got something I've never seen that throws in the face of the corroborative evidence I've got here. And, beyond all that hard evidence, the 90's one just reeks of 90's design. And the 80's similarly for the 80's. :-)
But hey, I'm the weirdo packaging historian, and people get this stuff wrong all the time. Journalists, google-ers. It's why, once they know, I'm called in to consult on all these period TV shows and films. This is what I do! 8)

Boy, I really don't think this one had US distribution, I've never seen it (not that I've seen everything), and I cannot for the life of me find a single mention of it in US sources.
Whatever the case, I think it's an awesome inclusion (even if only a 1980's UK product). Love it.

What was the typical content of Omni in its heyday? Science fiction short stories, serials, etc? I’ve long known of it, I believe it was a Bob Guccione publication, but I never came across a copy to check it out.

Besides Omni, remember 2 other science related magazines in the 1980's? - 3-2-1 Contact Magazine and Discover Magazine?
We still have Popular Science magazine.
-
What was the typical content of Omni in its heyday? Science fiction short stories, serials, etc? I’ve long known of it, I believe it was a Bob Guccione publication, but I never came across a copy to check it out.
First published in October 1978 by Guccione (publisher of Penthouse magazine), OMNI touted itself as a Science Fact/Fiction magazine. When it began, it was mostly filled with interesting genuine science articles about space, physics, earth sciences, medicine, etc. Each issue would also have three or four short sci-fi stories in it as well that were all usually pretty good. Back in those early days, I devoured each issue, reading it cover-to-cover. But as I said, as the magazine continued on, the science articles began to gravitate more towards the realm of UFOs, Psychic Phenomenon and the Paranormal. By the end of the 1980's, that was pretty much all it seemed to report on. Heck even the issue that Dave parodied here (July 1982) has on the cover the caption "Link Between Computers and the Paranormal".
I do remember Discover magazine but not the Contact magazine. I had a subscription to OMNI in the late 80's / early 90's mainly just to keep the collection complete. I rarely read the whole magazine any longer at that point. I think it was around 1992 that they stopped publishing OMNI and I remember that I started getting Discover magazine in its place for my subscription.
-
I remember 3-2-1 Contact and its show-within-a-show, The Bloodhound Gang. It had two main characters - a Black teen girl and a Black teen boy - and a younger White kid that, I think, was a different one in most every episode.
The teen girl would always answer the phone with the line "Bloodhound Detective Agency. Whenever there's trouble, we're there on the double. Mr. Bloodhound isn't here." After that, I always said to myself "...and never will be.", because no one on the team ever saw Mr. Bloodhound or heard his voice, unlike Charles ("Charlie") Townsend in Charlie's Angels where, even if the Angels never saw Charlie, they did hear his voice.

there was an attempt at a re-start a few years ago, and it looked like the magazine would be coming back to newsstands quarterly.
but only the 2017 collector issue ever saw the light of day

I repainted the cup on Orange Furious after getting new info concerning the one I used was from the 1990s. Got the 1980s cup on it now. This was one of the causes of the delay along with needing more sketch cards to be done and a wait at the printer. I'll try to get printing/ shipping info on Monday and let everyone know. Maybe the 1990's version of Orange Furious might be perfect for Old School 10 - either as part of 30 all 1990's Wacky Packages entries or as part of a 10 sticker subset of 1990's Wacky entries along with 10 1980's entries and 10 1970's entries. Unless this Orange Furious goes into an upcoming Wacky Packages weekly series like 3 other planned and rejected Wacky Packages ANS entries (Picky Stix, purple Marshmallow Creeps, Sparkler towels) did.
