Hey all, So WP Old School 9 is all set for November. Gags are all written and are at the lawyer for approval. Hope to be starting painting on them in a week or two.
This year's set will once again be the 1980s. I had a number of cool products I really wanted to do and it made sense to do two in a row. Don't worry, the 70s will come back again.
So what I want from you all is to LMK about anything in the series that can be improved upon, what any problems were, etc.
So far there are some changes on the practical side I've already discussed with them.
1. Making sure they have the artwork as large as possible on the front. The images were weirdly shrunk last time.
2. I'm sending them a list of sketch card artists I feel best represent WPs. We need the best of the best working on the sketches this time.
3. I like that pack wrapper card so I've requested to have that stay. Will update the color on it.
4. I've always hated the rough cards. So I designed a WAY cooler thing to replace them. These are so cool they are like a set you'd want even if it was not in Old School.
5. I HATE the generic On Demand black box. It doesn't have any indication of what the set is inside and it's useless for display. I've suggested they print the small box up and make it look like what the series 1-5 Old School boxes looked like. So you'd get a mini Old School 9 box. I'd make it a version of the 1985 box. Will keep you posted on that. Fingers crossed. If you like this idea LMK so I can show them the demand for it.
So beyond these please LMK anything and everything you think about the product. That could be about the Ludlows and backs, the way the puzzles and checklist are set up, the collation, price (keep in mind the sets are VERY expensive to make so Topps needs to make money), who's buying how many sets. are you collecting the different backs, etc, etc.
I also suggested some buying incentives. Buying a certain amount of sets should not only get you on my list for a chance to win a piece of art (which I will do again this time around) but I think should also get you a special bonus gift. I've made a number of suggestions towards that.
I can't guarantee anything but I really want to make this as collectible, as cost effective and as fun as possible. Our WP offerings are limited but online is our only option right now. There are a number of projects in the works but each one depends on the success of the previous one especially for WPs.

David,
This all sounds amazing. You’ve had such a busy 2020 with all the Wackies that have been coming out. Love the idea of the wacky box instead of the generic box. I guess the biggest issue is that it would be nice to know if you bought a certain amount of sets. Such as enough that you would cover off all the variant backs...you would get them all. There are been too many instances of duplicate backs etc. Being able to complete an entire set without having to go onto eBay would make many happy. The sketch cards hold the most value to eBay flippers..so maybe there could be a way to get a complete set of the cards + variant backs without sketch cards. Even if it means buying multiple sets. It’s just the guarantee that would be nice. . Whomever wants the sketch cards can still get them. Maybe there’s a sketch card + base set bundle or something at a different price. Anyways. Just my 2 cents. Can’t wait to see what you’ve come up with and count me in.
-
Sounds great, Dave! Looking forward to this set. I think making the On Demand box look like a miniature version of an OLDS display box is a very cool idea.
-
Personally, I will miss the pencil cards. I really enjoyed them! But, I trust you to produce a great set, so, I'm in. 100%

For me they were hard to read and I just didn't like an all B&W set of cards. I'll shows the roughs in large size here and people can make their own cards out them, ha.
-
Love the Box Idea. Very happy to see this series continue.Looking forward to your replacement for roughs. Not a big fan of the roughs.
-
Thanks for forwarding our input, Dave.
Increasing the image sizes from last time is definitely my top priority for the cards. I also would love it if Topps would make sure their cards with printed reverses have consistent orientation!! I've been pleading for this for years, and they still haven't managed it. If Topps needs a visual example of a set that doesn't work right, I can PM scans to you. Those inconsistencies really show when cards are put in pages.
I would prefer that they eliminate tan and ludlow alternate backs; they were fun at first, but now they are just annoying and expensive. I won't miss the roughs much, especially if there's a cool replacement. But, I do like a 9 card puzzle, and again, if they're on dual side cards, orientation matters, as does the card numbering if numbered fronts go with puzzle piece reverses. Alphabetical checklist ordering can also mess with puzzles on the reverse.
I find the generic On Demand box ugly, and the boxes usually tear when I try to open them, so I wouldn't mind just getting the sets in a taped plastic case, especially if it will reduce costs. But, the header "pack wrapper" card is great and I hope they let you keep it.
A lot of people miss the dedicated binders, but I don't know if the production cost would be too high.
A buying incentive sounds interesting. Will ponder on that.
-
I'm looking forward to another OLDS set!
Here is my opinion:
1. Bigger artwork is certainly better. You could leave the numbers off completely if you want.
2. I'm not really into the sketches, so just getting 1 would be enough for me.
3. Wrapper card is nice!
4. I didn't care for the pencil roughs either, so any improvement would be greatly appreciated.
5. A cool box related to the product would be super! Bring back the nostalgia any way you can.
I've never been in favor of intentional back or border variations. I do like the coupons in the weekly sets only because they feature the same product from the sticker - similar to the Wacky Ads, which are one of my favorite sets. I never really cared for the coupon backs on the ANS sets. So just one back with coupons that matched the product would be my first choice. Puzzle backs would be my second choice. Anything else is just making it cost too much and not adding any value to the product. I know they have to make money, and this is probably the best way to sell more. So...
I would love to see the set marketed with a "kickstarter" approach where you can buy what you want, and only what you want. If that was the case, then I would buy a base set, a coupon back set, one of your special sets, a few unopened packs (like the last Mars Attacks Kickstarter set), and an uncut sheet (if they still make those with on demand printing). And for Richard, I'll throw in either a binder or binder inserts so I could use my own binder. You could even make these inserts for the other OS sets that didn't have a binder too!

I definitely concur with this.
You'd be able to buy what you like and spend as much money as you want.

concur on all of that, except possibly #4, but if you have a better replacement, then sure, I'm all for it.
That #1 is top priority, who ever did the layout work on Olds8 is in the wrong profession. All that forced white space was absolutely ridiculous. They clearly didn't give a damn about the end product design, and there was no oversight on that stupidity either.
#2, a solid array of sketches will be key to selling this out.
#3, the pack wrapper header card was good idea, but the design was poorly executed. The brilliant white of the new logo contrasting against the wax wrapper 'white' was just AWFUL. It should be easy to get the OLDS logo elements color-matched with the wax wrapper tones.
#5, yes, a new On Demand box would be fantastic, if it is done up as a mini Wacky box. And perhaps including something like the incentive that was done in the recent GPK Untold Stories On Demand set, where several boxes (1:100) were fully sketched/painted, would be really amazing.
outside of your five - the arrangement of the $50 tier that was used yet again on OLDS8 is just beyond stupid. I believe you tried to get that tier changed before it went on sale last time, but it was too late. If there are two tiers yet again, the lower tier should NOT simply be a random third of the cards in the upper tier, where there isn't even a complete base set provided. Having a lower priced 'entry point' makes sense to attract buyers, but the content for these was totally brainless. Make the tier meaningful and not a third-assed sham.
as mentioned elsewhere, the tan/ludlow backs are tired at this point. Puzzle backs, which were actually in the '85 set, would be a nice change-up.

Dave,
Thanks for asking for our input, as our output of WackyLoot will drive this:
1. Eliminate the Pencils
2. GREAT Sketches only
3. BINDER BINDER BINDER (I do not mind creating them for the group) ....OFFICIAL Binder is BETTER!
4. Too Many Variations - OLD SCHOOL - Keep it that way......
a. Wrapper
b. Checklist
c. BASE STICKERS!!! (Not Cards) - Peel 'em and Stick them old way!
5. New Ideas or repeated successes:
a. QUALITY Sketch Cards
b. Die Cut Versions of each card in the set (THIS would be a COOL Chase Set)
c. Mixed Up Art - From Chrome
d. Sticker Guide (Like the 1982 Album Stickers) - KICKSTARTER
e. Kick Starter - Dr.Ono had it right
f. Show the Real Product on the Back of the Spoof
1. Do a Lenticular of the Original and the Spoof - Bonus Set
6. Bonus Sets - 9 CARDS ONLY!!!!!! - VERY Frustrating with 10 for display purposes - NINE Only please!

* Hidden Treasures cereal
* George magazine

Thanks all, keep the thoughts coming. It's going to be some changes but not everything so keep that in mind. I know we can get a lot more changes for next year as we really revamp Wackys. These are looking up all around for the brand.
Hey, does anyone have a 1985 box that you can take me some good straight on photos of the box front and the four sides? If so please send me images of them to: slamjim45b@gmail.com
I want to make a mock-up using an On Demand box so they have a clear visual of it.
-
Could you do a mixed-up character variant like they did with chrome. IE: Take one or four of the new titles and insert a character from another OLD School title.
Make these cards rare and let us have some fun chasing them.

just my opinion, and I think if it were a different type of card, a Kickstarter-style
sale would work, but these are still "collectible" cards and there is a fun aspect to
buying cards and trying to collect and fill a whole set.
I agree, it shouldn't be terribly difficult, and shouldn't break the bank either. If they
offered different "levels" of sets, would that be appealing to most people?
i.e. for X amount of dollars, you get the basic set
for an additional X amount, you'll get the basic set, plus ludlows
add X for the coupon sets
add X for sketch cards
etc.
Disclaimer: I'm just curious myself what everyone thinks as well, and I call
myself a completist to a point, and have been enjoying the Wacky surge and
want it to continue for a long time!

Totally agree with you about the various levels. I consider myself a completionist as well. I also have to agree that this year has been amazing for Wackies and the quality of Wackies. Keep this train going. Just needs a bit of fine tuning.

Absolutely! A "name your price tool" to steal the slogan from Progressive. I love Wacky Packages too, and used to consider myself a completist, but my life has other priorities as I've gotten older. Spending $200 for something that should cost me $50 to get what I really want can only try my patience before too long before "I'm out" to steal a slogan from Shark Tank.

Great news, Dave! I like all your suggestions and know you are a great advocate for Wackys to Topps. A few of the most important changes, off the top of my tired head, would be
1. Get rid of back variations! Or allow people to buy sets with whatever back they choose. That way, someone can buy a set of just white (or whatever) and be done with it. If someone wants all three backs, they can buy all three sets.
2. I love the idea of the box mimicking the '85 box. I've missed those Old School boxes (not to mention actual packs).
3. I like the sketches and am willing to pay for them, but wouldn't mind if they were a la carte. Options to simply buy the set, the sketches, back variations, etc would be nice. We cheapskates could keep it simple but there would be plenty of options for deeper pocketed collectors.
4. I'd love to see a binder, perhaps one that is based just on your 80's designs.
Keep up the good work!

By the way, will it be next month in October 2020 we may see the list of what 1980's products will get spoofed in OS9?

Hey all, So WP Old School 9 is all set for November.
So, how will they be available this time? Only at Topps, or will Target, etc., get them? I haven't bought new Wackys in a while, but I don't want to miss out on OS9.

There are a number of projects in the works but each one depends on the success of the previous one especially for WPs.
Hi David!
I know you mentioned that you will preview some art from this set soon...but do you have any more info on content, configuration, what a complete set will entail (base set, back variations, chase cards, bonus/purchase incentive cards etc) thank you! Can’t wait to see what you’ve come up with for Old School 9!

Same here. Hopefully not too many "chase" cards.

So mr gross, where's the sneak peek?
-
Hey all, I think Monday will be the sneak peek and hopefully I can give more details. I expect it to go on sale the 12th. I know they have a killer lineup of sketch card artists and this time they gave them a lot of time do do the art.
Had some messed up issues getting online, sorry for the wait in my response.

If they're not going to be at Target, do we order OS9 from the Topps website, or directly from one of the cool collectors-turned-artists on here? Neil? Dave?
-
Old School has always been an online only set at Topps.com

Cool. Thanks. Pardon my wacky question, as both an old-school mag-7 and newbie to ANS. It's like being a kid and a geezer at the same time!
-
Only 4 days away from the release.
-
Should have some images tomorrow instead. Release is Thursday. I'll send out a big email as well. Hoping to get to show something tonight but not yet sure.

The apple juice parody is for those mini cartons filled with bubble gum nuggets, not an actual carton of juice. They made it in several flavors over the years. Might even still be made, not sure.

I know what the candy is. What i'm trying to figure out is where you saw candy stores in the 80's.

Not a throwback pure candy store if that’s what you’re asking. Newsstands, coffee shops, convenience stores, anyplace that had the best selection of candy items, that’s all. I use the term loosely. It’s what we called those types of stores back then.
-
After the last of the local candy-shops closed, I remember a time between candy-shops and mini markets that drug stores were big purveyors of CANDY.
(side note) I drove by the, now long closed, meat market that my mom bought my first pack of Wackys. Its now a run down residence, BUT the door to the place is still the same.

Anytime I go back to where I grew up in Westlake Village in Southern California, I remember the good times we had as a kid visiting a candy store called Shaw’s Candy. We used to buy giant jaw breakers that would not even fit in your mouth. We loved those things.
-
Soooo very excited for OS9! With these coming I'm kinda hoping Topps wraps up the weekly series. I'm tired of the long wait for weeks old sets and was not happy with the "sticky"cards I received. (Topps never responded to my two emails about that.) So having retired from the weekly series, which I enjoyed immensely initially, I'm more than ready for OS9. Thanks for the previews!

We had a few independent pharmacies with good candy sections too, come to think of it. One was pretty good for cards too, being the only place I remember seeing 1980 Creature Feature and certain oddball early 80’s sports series.

Aside from places like Woolworth's and McCrory's, we had a few "Five and Dime" type stores that were great for candy and sometimes cards. There was one right in Centereach called Smiles that I loved. Old wooden floor that creaked, and stocked with all different kinds of stuff. The last local pharmacy that sold lots of other items was awesome! They sold ANS Wackys, candy, and I even found the Wacky backpacks, lunchbox and flip flops there. Unfortunately, they closed a few years ago.

one option is to just post the url of the image on a hosting site, such as postimages.org
go to that website, upload image. Copy the url, then paste it in the message here
like this: https://postimg.cc/jW363mdC

Nice. Got my set ordered! :great:
-
HOLY GOOD LORD ALMIGHTY!!!!
$150 A SET!!!
Dave, you can tell Topps they've just priced a whole lotta people out of buying.
I love supporting this set but I definitely won't be buying as many as I had planned on.
-
I bought a set but I agree with ratchet007 above - the $150 price tag is really pushing it.
Go back to selling boxes where you get 2 full sets, 1 sketch card and some variants - I know those retailed for less than $100. (plus you actually got to open packs!!!)

It's the exact same price it's been for three years now. You get three sketch cards which, with the quality they are you can sell one and get much of the cost back. Sell two or three and you probably profit from the set. And you get the full set without having to buy multiple sets and all the extra cards as well. Next set should have a box if things work out like I'm planning. Hopefully other things as well.

I bought one, and I'm looking forward to getting it. Thanks again for putting it together.
However, I have to agree with bwing and ratchet007, the cost is very prohibitive. Why make me buy the sketches if I have to sell them to make the rest affordable? And again with the back variations - a total waste. I don't blame you; I know that Topps controls that. It's just another example of sticking it to the collector for all they can.

It's actually not sticking it to the collector. The cost of paying me to make 30 cards plus printing and the other things in the set does not jive with a $14.99 set or $19.99 area. The weekly sets they can charge that because it's only a few cards to produce and much less extra. I think having 3 sketch cards in a huge deal for the collector. The GPK fans would be thrilled to get those in one of GPK sets comparatively speaking.
-

I'm not blaming you for the pricing or the set make up. But your argument was to sell the sketch cards to make it affordable. If they're so desirable, why would anyone want to do that?
I'd be willing to pay $60 for the 31 base cards and $40 for the 20 graduation photos - $100 and I got everything I wanted. I really couldn't care less about the back variations, and I don't want to have to buy 3 sets at $150 for the possibility of getting all 20 graduation photos if the collation is near perfect. I want to support these, but maybe I should stop buying from Topps and just buy from the secondary market. Of course if everyone felt like I did, there would be no secondary market.
-
First, Dave, you have our gratitude for what looks to be an AMAZING product
To echo that drono said, though, and to reiterate what I said in the Weekly Series forum section, the variations need to go.
I think you can agree that without these in the weekly sets or this set, the cost would be less. I know I can only speak for myself, but I don't need Red Ludlows.
In addition, although I do like the idea of additional inserts like the graduation photo cards, the problem with them is I have to buy at least 3 sets to complete them.
Maybe Topps can have an option of just the base set for sale for future releases.

Agree: back color or ludlow variations are unnecessary. (On the other hand, coupon backs are interesting.)
-

Absolutely!!
-
The variations don't cost a lot more. It's paying us a living wage to make a giant set like this along with the additional other costs coming out to somewhere where Topps needs to pay that all off then make a reasonable profit over that to justify resources for the period of time they are working on the set (along with anyone else working on it). You could say collecting the parallels can be gouging but collecting Luds and that stuff is more for the hardcore collector to give them something to chase. Lots of fans still like to do that.
If YOU feels the sketch cards are desirable and know that they are valuable then the set is worth the price. 3 detailed sketch cards in one purchase is huge. If you are not into sketch cards at all then getting rid of them makes sense. You get your money back and possibly more. The recent GPK Halloween Stories set, while cheap costs a ton to put together with no guarantee to even getting one sketch card.
We are making a retail set sized set without the benefit of retail stores which limits the number of potential buyers dramatically which is going to cost more on the production side and the buyer side.
Having a base set only option would kill any hope of having more sets. The best alternatives are if you don't want the sketch cards or the other goods is to buy a base set off Ebay in a few weeks (or months with Topps speedy mailing, ha) once the sets get to the dealers. They sell the sketch cards and then sell base sets by themselves. If the sketch cards are high quality (which they are) then they will be buying a lot to sell those and the wheel continues to spin. Or, the other option I mentioned earlier to sell one or more of them. I mean, if you sell one and get $50 for it it's now a $100 set of 59 cards. Sell two and it's $50 for 58 cards. Sell three at that price and you got 57 cards for free. Some cards might not be worth that much but others alone may get $100, $150, $200 or more so lots of choices.
Unfortunately we are in a world of no more retail Wackys (at least for now) so coming up with creative ways to continue getting WPs to the fans while also making Topps money is not going to please everyone. But, like I said, there are alternatives to still getting what you want at the price you want them at.
-
The Luds/ Tans and whites were there because of the 1970s sets. In the 80s we probably don't need them. I'll make note of that if we do the 80s again. If I had coupon backs on the 70s stuff it would be a weird combo of ANS and the OS. I'm just trying to stay as true as possible to the idea behind the set.
-

I like chasing as well as anyone else, but if I dropped $450 on some stickers, I'd be chasing after my wife before she got to the divorce lawyer. That kind of disposable income isn't available to everyone. I struggled to justify $150.
The Luds/ Tans and whites were there because of the 1970s sets.
But only by accident, not intentionally and their value was the same when they were produced. It's only later that some became more desirable.

I meant I had them in Old School because they are memories from the 70s sets. If I had coupon backs on those original Old School sets it would be weird.

There ARE Wackys at retail right now. They are the World's Smallest Wackys and you pay $5.99 for One Tiny Wacky Plus 5 minis. So cool to see those hitting WalMart.
The OS9 set looks great Dave. Thanks for making it happen!

Touche! 3-D Wackys yes.
Thanks! I put everything I had into this set. Hope everyone likes all the stickers. I don't want to mass spoil them this time so a slow rollout of images.

I might have missed this in the discussion, but what is on the backs of the graduation cards....puzzle pieces?
I'm definitely buying a set to support the continuation of the OS series.

Please rollout the images only in the spoiler thread. I like to see the stickers when I receive them.
As far as the price, I just bite the bullet for one set. Yes, I was shocked also a couple years ago when this business model dropped, but I realized this is the only way we're getting more old school. I keep my set sealed for each release and then I buy a base set or two on ebay to display and stick. I miss the old days of getting a box and packs though.
-

I think it’s sad that $300, two set price, won’t get you enough of the school picture cards to even trade with to get all the others,
-
I remember when they where sold for 3 for 150 and 1 for 50. If my memory serves me right, not many of the 1 for 50 sold but the 3 for 150 sold out. I agree with you that you should be paid for the work you do. I for one am excited for the subset (I think graduation set of 20?). I am happy that it doesn't give you everything for 150 dollars. That just cheapens the set for later. I am liking what I see on this set. The Bartles and Jaymes one is so good. I like the details that you do on the set. I saw a lot of the AP's for this set. They are awesome. Jasmine did 8 glitter cards, I picked up the Gadzooka one. Dave you are right she could have charged more and got it. She sold out in 3 hours of her 8. This set and we the collectors help everyone. It helps that on these sketches, ( we all have seen a lot of the sketches on Facebook already) look awesome. They are not "phoned in". Dave is right if you want to the secondary market will support this series. So our money goes to better quality sketches and also the set itself. That way on future sets, we get artist that put that extra into the cards. So I am good with the pricing. I knew in advance it was coming. So I saved up to get a few sets. I will keep a set for myself with the chases. I will then trade/sell off the doubles and the sketches I don't want. It is a win for everyone. Dave you are right about the GPK crowd. The three sketches for 150.00 would be all sold out on the first day I bet. BTW How many 150 dollar sets are being made?
-
I would gladly have taken all 20 graduation pictures instead of the variant backs. I MIGHT have bought 3 sets IF I knew I'd get all of them, but the way Topps has been collating lately, I doubt that I would. My two cents on that subject.
However, this looks like a great set that I will enjoy. Great job on putting it together!

Do we really think all 20 of our Wacky Characters Graduated? I highly doubt that ; given what we know about them. School was clearly the last thing on the mind of at least half of those characters!

Clearly they were all taught by the Gadzooka teacher.

Dave, I have no doubt that this is another superb set, a true labor of love, it shows.
Thank you so much for all you do with Old School, and Wackys in general, as well
as a big kudos to the other great artists involved with the Weekly series and even
the GPKs!
Thanks for keeping these old grocery titles alive, sometimes I'll recognize a product
that I hadn't thought about for years and years, and say to myself "Oh yeah, I remember those..."

If you want any of OLDS9 it's almost sold out! Just a heads up!
Also, if you bought three or more remember to send me a receipt so you can get into the raffle I'm having.

Hi gang,
[Edit: A couple of kind forum members offered to help me out, so I've worked it out with one of them to purchase a base set. So I'm all set. :-) ]
Not sure if this is the right thread for it, but for me $150 is just too much for a set. And I LOVE Old School. Not an indictment, just don't personally see value in all the chase pieces. Respect if you do. I'm not in step with the vast majority of trading card collectors or the hobby.
Regardless, in the past I have waited to get a base set on eBay and I think I've historically paid around $40-$50 for such a thing. If someone is ordering in bulk and selling extra base sets to forum members, let me know. Happy to go the ebay route, but of course would be happier to deal with a forum member.

Now SOLD OUT
-
Holy cow, thankfully I got my order in late last night. Glad to see OS9 did so well!

I thought these were print on-demand after their week on sale is over. Why would Topps put a limit on the number available to be sold? Am I wrong about them being printed after the sales period?
-

The sketch cards are what limits the sales. There’s only so many of them to go around.
If there was a sketch-less version, they could just keep on printing as many as they can sell.

Thanks, that makes sense. I forgot about the limited availability of the sketch cards. :great:

I dithered between buying the full $150 set with sketches and extras on ebay and picking up just the base set for reasons Jason articulated far more eloquently than I. Once I heard it was sold out, my decision was made for me. If anyone has an extra base set they want to sell or trade, please let me know.
Thanks!

The sketch cards are what limits the sales. There’s only so many of them to go around.
If there was a sketch-less version, they could just keep on printing as many as they can sell.
So the question is - Are the sketch cards worth it? Without them, the set price could be lower and print run unlimited. Maybe we could get boxes, wrappers, kiss-cut etc. if the volume was high enough.
Bottom line is the sketch card business model optimal? 600 sets limit seems so low. But print run has to be balanced with set price and payout to those involved in the production.
-

I don't think it's clear if they're worth it or if the business model IS optimal. It seems clear from Topps' choices that they don't see another way to go with these, even if another way might exist. They may see it as perfectly clear that "this is the way". I hope not.
I've watched with fascination from the introduction of the very first Old School set, which I thought was a stroke of genius in format and value, through now.
Early on, the sketch craze overtook all else, driving up sales of boxes (but entirely in the chase for sketches), in moments seeing color sketches selling for more than original artwork, and more. Certainly the fandom (and forum chatter) was all about the sketches. The stickers, and indeed the format itself (boxes, packs, kiss-cut stickers) become an afterthought to the majority of buyers in that sketch card chase. Topps increased Old School print runs to meet the increased sketch card demand. But that demand was never about the product or its sincere and appealing format, it was the demand for sketch cards. The demand for Old School boxes of cards was never that. And when the sketch market fluctuated, Topps was left with inventory. Finally, it seemed that Topps' budgets and profit/loss reports suddenly determined that the Old School model wasn't viable anymore. And a new way forward was designed. Premium price, less charming format... but, you guessed it, more sketches! They rationally looked at what was driving big sales (and folks were buying CASES of Old School to get sketches, that was it) and they stripped most everything else from the original format away.
Hell, remember when they attempted to market entire sketch card sets (or was it just "Sketches on demand") - they stripped 100% of everything away BUT they sketches. I didn't pay it much attention, so I don't know how well that all went for them. That was Topps responding to demand in the most aggressive way.
Now, I don't think it's necessarily true the the original Old School format (boxes, packs, stickers, etc) is nonviable. I assume it still is, but it's just more investment and risk. Unless the format was never viable and Topps just ate huge losses on Old School 1 and 2, etc. Which maybe they did? It seems unlikely, because we are seeing folks release sticker sets in a very Old School way, and I assume they're at least breaking even.
I'd love to see Old School go back to the boxes and packs and kiss-cut stickers (with the enjoyment of sticking them as an option). That's me. I'll acknowledge that it's never going to be as inexpensive as it was (I think those Old School 1 boxes were only $50 each!), but lets say it was $100 a box.. we'd still be getting a lot of value there.
That said, I fear I'm in the minority. I suspect that the majority of hobbyists still care more about the sketches, and that's just where the market might be. They perhaps don't want to "waste money on boxes of swill" stickers, just to get to the sketches. Because they're not just collecting a few sketch cards, they're collecting handfuls of them. So for them, this new format is far more efficient. I just think it's utterly without that Old School charm.
But if Dave and the team at Topps can figure out a way to bring back some of the genius and charm of the original Old School releases format, I think that would be awfully damned good. And I would like to believe the hobby would be better and more vital for it, long term.
If not, I'll just keep buying base sets with Dave's gorgeous paintings printed on them from other forum members. I'll live.
-
I look at Old School 9 this way: Yes, $150 is a lot of money, but if I don't want the sketches I can sell them, which brings down the set price (sometimes a lot). And, as I try to build subsets like the Graduation cards, I end up with base sets to sell or trade with people here who find the $150 price unpalatable. And now, with all the new sets around, including minis, there are a lot of trading possibilities! I may eventually end up with a complete set of minis, even the stickers, which I had kind of given up on.
My only problem is keeping track of everything :o
-
Yes, overwhelming with all the 2020 weeklies, Wacky Halloween, Brand Busters, and OLDS9. We are giving ourselves a lot for the holidays! >(

Great analysis Jason! I'm with you on the old school charm. Sketches are nice, but they hold very little interest for me. I think if Topps would take a Kickstarter approach, they would sell a lot more and eliminate the risk of unsold product. That way you and I could buy a base set and maybe a smaller subset (coupons, grad photos, etc.) and get just what we want for a price that doesn't include any extras. Topps could also sell "chase" options like packs with ludlows and sketches for those that want to chase. I just don't think Topps is interested because Wacky Package collecting has become a niche market, and they're never going to make the kind of profit they do on sports cards. So they don't feel it's worth the time to change their business model. Unfortunately for the two of us and others who feel like we do, the "chasers" keep dumping a lot of money that we're not willing to pay, so they have no real incentive to change formats.

Yeah, that all makes sense. I think all of this is what we personally make of it, and there's so many possible facets to it, and ways to go - from the collector perspective, and the brand managers at Topps' perspective. At the end of the day, I'm grateful that Old School continues, and that I'm still able to get a wonderfully creative set of Wackys out of it.

Pat,
There is a LOT of scanning and YES!!! I still use WackyBase Deluxe!
YES I agree with the sketch cards theory - You do not like them sell them and You are probably making money = FREE WACKIES!

Hey all, just wanted to give you all a heads up that I expect Old School to go to the printer sometime late next week. We had some hiccup delays due to some sketch cards that needed to be redone/ added and I had some art delays on my end due to Covid issues. I also wanted to adjust some pieces based on new info from Jason concerning packaging so that delayed it. Very sorry about that but I want it to look right. I think you will love the set. I worked longer on this one than any other previous set.
I will be doing the raffle sometime next week as well. More on this after the weekend.
Thanks!
Dave

Thanks for the update, Dave! Really looking forward to this set.

Hey all, I'll find out the schedule on Monday as far as printing and all that.
Raffle is this coming week on Tuesday night. Currently I have 19 people. If anyone else ordered three or more of Old school please LMK and send me a receipt. This time around I'm doing it differently. If you ordered 3 you get a ticket, 6 gets you two tickets, 9 gets you three and so on. Second, I'm adding more prizes, more chances for art.
Details on Monday.
-
Dave, I'm looking forward to the release, again many kudos and congratulations for a job well done, the set promises to be
incredible and you brought back some 70's memories with many of those titles that I had forgotten about!
I'm sure it was a lot of hard work, and sweat and anxiety, and it is much, much appreciated!

Hey David!
How’s the Old School schedule looking? Looks like Topps has been churning out the Wacky Packages this week, based on all the shipping notices! Did you wind up doing your draw?
Can’t wait for this set!!
-
Just got shipping notice :great:
-
Just got my shipping notice as well! So exciting!!

Got mine Yesterday!

Hey all,
Doing the raffle tomorrow night at 8. The video of the drawing will be posted on Facebook at that time and I'll also post you the results here.
New way of doing things. If you order 3-5 sets you will get one name in the hat, 6-8 sets you get two names, 9-11 you get three names and so on. I have 20 people this time around who bought 3 or more sets. I will also be increasing the prize amounts! There will be 2 final paintings available and a rough for EVERYONE else! Everyone wins this time! 3 roughs will be from this Old School set and the remaining ones will be older unused roughs from ANS!

Let me clarify that you can't win more than once. So even if you have multiple names in the hat the benefit to that is to try to get one of the paintings or the new Olds roughs which will be the first five drawn. Once you've won the remaining strips with your name are null and void. After the first five everyone else is already a winner with the remaining roughs I have available for the raffle which will be distributed randomly.

Thanks for the update Dave.
On a side note, my sets are scheduled to arrive today.
Can't wait to get a look at them.

Cool! LMK what you think of the set. I'm hoping all the things I asked them to do were done (especially making the art larger on the cards compared to the last set)

Dave,
The art and the numbering are larger. Collation on the Graduation photos , Red Luds and tan backs were pretty decent(at least for the sets I got). Was disappointed they came in the plain black boxes again. Overall, great set even though I don't recognize all the products.
-
My "shipped" order hasn't even made it to Fedex yet

Yeah, I made a mock up box but it was too late to convince them to use it. Working on that for the next time. Glad to hear the art was bigger. That was my #1 problem last set and they assured me it would be fixed this time.
-
I paid for FedEx overnight.
I considered doing that, but the last time I paid Topps for overnight shipping, it "shipped" on a Friday, so they considered Monday to be "overnight."

That’s exactly what happened to me this time Pat. I was pissed but, apparently I still got them before almost every one else.

I paid for Overnight as standard delivery takes so long. Got hit by the same weekend long idle time, but the package arrived to the local warehouse on Sunday, and showed ‘expected delivery by 8pm Monday’.
That was a good start, except as of Tuesday morning they are still sitting in the same warehouse, showing an update to say ‘no scheduled delivery date’
Filing for a postage refund today, we’ll see if that goes anywhere
Every time I pay for expedited shipping with fedex, they muck it up somehow.

I hope Topps refunds your postage! I used the overnight several times with great results, but the last 2 times got the Friday crap. Decided if I was going to be aggravated over their awful shipping, it might as well not cost me any money.

On hold for 50 minutes with Topps, but paperwork is now ‘in work’ to get the Overnight shipping cost refunded.
Tracking was updated to show its now out for delivery, so at least it wasn’t lost in a Raiders of the Lost Ark warehouse

I'm glad the artwork is bigger on this set compared to the last one, but why oh why are the numbers and black borders so large? It appears as if someone just zoomed the whole shebang to fit on the card. Wish they could get the proportions right.
-
I have not seen the finished cards. Can you post one?
-
comparing card 1 from OLDS 8 to OLDS 9
larger image, very welcome. Thicker black border on this one, which makes it look like an OS card and waiting for a die cut. Most of the other cards do not have a thick border. Some quite thin even, like with Ominous.
pretty sure the card stock is thinner though

Hey all, I'm moving the raffle one more day to tomorrow night. I'll post the results here then. Have to finish up tomorrow's Wacky and I'm behind on it!
-
The enlarged image size is a definite improvement. Some of the designs are intricate, and especially with the smaller peripheral gags, you need a larger image so that you don't have to resort to a magnifying glass to really see it all! Otherwise, it is like the fine print on a contract that you don't notice until its too late!
-
I ordered a whole bunch, but no notification of shipping, no expected dates, nothing.
This isn't just Topps, it's with everything in my area. The mail is just horrendous
and unpredictable. I sent out bills two weeks ago, and I'm getting calls saying
I haven't paid a thing.

Toofless is Jay O'Leary. He has been doing GPK for the past few years. I think this is first foray into Wackies.

had a chance to finally sort my packs.
once again, some of the absolute worst collation I have seen from Topps
I had doubles of ludlows within a pack. Twice!
Couldn't complete any of the three subsets, and have quadruples of some #s.
and pulled a Chenduz sketch three packs in a row.
On the one hand, it's Chenduz, on the other hand, why is the distribution so bad?
another good set dragged down by Topps
-
This one has had puzzled me since the 50th Anniversary series came out.
Is Joe Grotesque and Joe Grossman one in the same?
I've seen Joe Gro sketches and Joe Grotesque sketches, but the signatures are way different.
Help!
;D

Hey everyone,
Sorry for the delay but Christmas then breaking my toe messed things up. I did the raffle using a name generator to be fair and the results are:
Clint Coleman - Painting for Equartz
Gary Krohn - Painting for Bangers!
Marc Simon - Rough for Equartz
Jaron James - Rough for Bangers!
Michael Gearheart - Rough for Cool Rank Doritoes
Everyone else (15 other people!) you all get an unused ANS rough! So everyone wins something! I'll select the roughs randomly. I'll need mailing addresses for everyone here on the forum that entered.
Thanks for supporting Old School as well as the other WP sets through this crazy year! We have lots more cool stuff coming in 2021.

My shipment has shown that FedEx was notified for pickup on Dec 18th but no change since. Called Topps this morning. The Customer rep says that means it’s boxed up and ready to ship. I asked if they do FedEx shipments daily. She said yes. So I asked why it would be ready for ten days but wouldn’t be picked up...crickets. I asked if there was a way they could confirm it was still there at the shipping point....more crickets. Agreed to call back Thursday or Friday if no updates on the tracking number. Time will tell.

You're absolutely right! Now, the order that is still in PA has changed back to an expected delivery day of today, and the one that made it to the local facility during the night says tomorrow. WTH??? :-\ :-\

On a similar note, after my discussion with Topps customer service yesterday morning, last night the tracking status changed from FedEx notified to being here in Terre Haute with expected delivery today. Not sure what kind of magic is afoot, but sometimes a respectful but firm call does wonders.
-

It looks as though the images were scaled to fit the sticker. If you notice, the numbers on the landscape stickers seem bigger than the ones on portrait. Or maybe it's just my 56-year-old eyes fooling me again.

My OLDS 9 order is enjoying the Florida vacation that COVID is preventing me from taking: Ft. Lauderdale to Miami to Opa Locka to Hollywood back to Opa Locka and then just relaxing for awhile. Hope the weather is better there than here in PA.

I have a book that I bought off eBay on December 5th as a Christmas present for my wife that is doing something similar. It started in Secaucus, NJ on 12/5, arrived in Glendale Heights, IL on 12/16 then off to York, PA on 12/17 where it supposedly left on 12/19 but has been stuck in limbo ever since. I wonder when it will make it to Virginia.
-
Thanks all, keep the thoughts coming.
I was wondering if you ever posted the names of the actual products. A few I can’t identify.

Busted Toe = Busted List
Poor Dave and his Wacky List!
Maybe we can all claim it is a short-print and sell them on Pirate's Bay for thousands!...... :-\
-
Some comments on OLDS9:
Fav 1: Doritoes. Lol funny, perfect gag.
Fav 2: Atracks. Love the character detail; great art!
Fav 3: Fleshen-up. Love the package look and detail.
I'm very happy to see the larger images. Except for Sliced. This one seems to be too small as compared to Croup Starter, which is another fav.
I still would like to see (literally) larger print. The font and clarity is an issue on some. Best example is 2-XXL. The print on the right side and bottom is impossibly small. I'm wearing reading glasses to see these and still need a magnifying glass for this one.
The Loonies. Awesome character detail. A face only a mother could love.
Dave, are there still plans for products from the 50's, 60's, and 70's and perhaps other older products for OLDS? Sometimes when I see vintage ads from say the old Sears catalog, I think it would be cool to see these as an OLDS series. Here's an idea-what an image of the actual product on one side and the Wacky on the flip side? Flip cards.

Yes, I have some things in motion concerning An Older School series. Probably towards the later part of the year. We are just working out how it's going to go down.
Unfortunately we can never use any of the real products for any Wacky series because of the ownership of the images.

It defeats the purpose if actual vintage real packaging designs can't be parodied due to ownership rights. That's what I love most about Wacky Packages - the instant recognition and detail of the package parodied.

*still* waiting for my old school set to arrive. C'mon postal service. Been stuck in Florida since Dec. 26th.

Topps never puts the real packaging images on the backs. A simple checklist with reference to the name only of the real product should be good enough. If people want to see pictures of it online, they can Google it.

I think you misunderstood what I had said. I was answering a question about printing the real products on the backs of the cards which Topps can't do. We can parody most any package old or new.

Thanks! I mis-read the original poster's tail end remark.

That's good to know. Looking forward to some older products!
In terms of the older products, I was thinking vintage products that are no longer made where the copyrights would be expired. Or how about a series of all spoofed Topps products such as vintage beanball, foolsball, hookey, planet of the grapes, etc.?
-
Finally received my Old School 9 set today. Better late than never! :great:
