Where did you get these(ie from whom)?

If you need to know,I traded a bunch of 1960s hockey cards from my own personal collection for a bunch of Wackys cards last month. I have been a sports card collector for many years! I have alot of extra Wackys after completing some full sets.

I ask because I have come across hundreds of ludlows across series 1 and 2 in my years and never have I had three with exactly the same backing like yours. All of mine had camels in different locations on the back.

I must have mixed the back scans last night. I got it right this time! Let me know if your interested in them?

UPDATED... THE CAP N CRUD HAS BEEN SOLD!! THANK YOU! STILL HAVE THE 2 OTHERS LEFT
WILL SELL REMAINING PAIR FOR $46 SHIPPED.

You mean some have a strange ink/dirt smudge and some don't? The remaining two look EXACTLY the same to me and I have never had ludlows that were so closely the same in a batch like this.

No silly. Here, I'll draw you a picture ;)

Most of your circles highlight where the camel marking has amazingly faded away creating a perceived difference. It almost looks like an ink pad job and the sticker was just slightly shifted by the smallest amount and some of the ink has faded away, smudged or something.
-
Hate to burst your bubble, but these are as close to fakes as I've seen. I think Ernie may be right. Looks like an ink pad job, with some slight variation.

Would fakes be stained like those are though? I always assumed fakes would be pristine.

Why is your assumption that an ink pad generated ludlow would remain prestine forever?
-
I am pretty confused here! Why would I get fakes from a life long wacky collector who has owned these since childhood?

No idea, you told us you got these from someone for 1960's hockey cards. None of the details about these coming from a life long wacky collector were offered when I asked. Who is the life long collector that you got these from? Is it an active member of the wacky pack community? Does he have a stash of other ludlows with this exact same backing as Cap n Crud and Chicken Fat are practically identical with a slight shift.
These could be completely legit, I am just throwing out some cautionary signs.

Didn't Greg have pictures of a complete set of black and red luds on his site somewhere? I thought I remembered seeing that, but maybe I was thinking of something else. I also remember talk of "gray" luds, and people said they were just poorly printed or faded black luds.

Yes, there is dark black and lighter grey coloring that is very common. I would say if the luds being discussed here are from someone who had these as a kid, then they would likeyly be legit. When I first asked about the source, all that was offered was that they were traded for some Hockey cards. I think seeing a set of luds and seeing how many random pairs have such a striking ludlow print resemblence would be interesting to see.

Because I would think if they were faked it would have been within the last 10 years when the rarity and value was recognized. Plus I've seen some on eBay from that Texas seller and they all looked to mint to be true.

You have lost me again, what texas seller and what does a Texas seller have to do with these ludlows?

I know the guy he is talking about but I cannot think of his name, he has burnt more than 1 forum member...does anyone remember that sellers name??? ???

Yes, I remember there was a seller from Texas screwing people with ludlows, I am not following what he has to do with this discussion. If people are suggesting that all fake ludlows originated with Texas, they would be wrong.

Magic Carpet Deals?

Magic Carpet Deals?
That is the one! I bought a "Wacky" tatoo off of him a couple of years ago he claimed it was NM, but when I recieved it the gum was broke into a hundred pieces! And of course "No Refund" then he got all bent out of shape when I gave him a negative feedback! BTW that was the only one I've ever given.

NO!!! Magiccarpetdeals is NOT associated with the fake ludlows. You may have had a bad experience with him but please don't mix up the facts about his assoication with ludlows.

Sorry about the "Mix-up" but I was not the only one who had a bad buying experience w/him, I thought he may have been the one...my bad.

Again, no debating whether there were bad transactions with him. The topic being discussed is fake ludlows and I am not aware of any circumstances where magiccarpetdeals was associated with fake ludlows. I am still at a loss on how this conversation veered into Texas sellers as I don't believe the ludlows discussed in this thread have any association with Texas.

No problem Ernie, I thought I recalled him (magic carpet deals) selling "ludlows" a little while back...I was obviously wrong, no biggie! ;D

The only fakes I've seen have been from that Texas seller. The were like pack fresh. These were talking about here look old to me. I doubt they were faked back in the 70's by a kid, and if you were going to fake a Ludlow would you pick them with wear and stains? Have you seen Ludlows that proved to be fake that looked like those?

oy ve, again, if a rubber stamp was used and the ink smeared, it would leave stains....also, fake ludlows that have been around for a long time eventually wear out and can accumulate stains. Dave Gross found a fake ludlow in his collection he had since the early 1990's and he is not even sure where he got it. Maybe I am the first to tell you this but it is pretty obvious there are numerous sources of fake ludlows in our hobby. Most of the fakes seem to be resticks of series two ludlow backs with series 1 titles since series 1 brings more $$.
Getting back on on topic here, if the ludlows of this thread are from a source who had these from the 1970s, then it is merely coincidence that a random pair of titles had nearly indentical ludlow backings.

Am I missing something? Based upon the specific back scans that were included in post #5, the backs don't look identical to me.

Wow, I honestly wouldn't have guessed faking Luds would go back into the early 90's. I didn't know they were a big deal 20 years or so ago.

Well, I can guarantee you that faking wacky packages wax packs goes back at least to the late '90's, because the majority
of a run of packs I got in 2001 were fake.

I pointed out in one of the messages that TWO OF THEM are almost identifcal and are off by the smallest shift. This was before this thread detoured off into Texas.
I found it remarkable that a seller would randomly sell two that were so close in backing. I reviewed greg's series 1 ludlow back page and found no pair that were such a close match as two of the ones offered here. It also was odd that when I asked about the source, first answer made it sound like a random trade with a sports card dealer for hockey cards and then the next response said they came from someone who was a lifelong collector of wackys.
I dare anyone to take a pile of ludlows and pull a pair who have backs that are off by barely a centimeter. Possible yes, statistically likely no, hence I asked the questions.
