Title: Wrapper Magazine Special Wacky Postcard Promo available now!
Post by: koduck on December 27, 2011, 04:59:33 PM
Hey postcard fans! A new Wacky Postcard promo and article is available in the current issue of the Wrapper magazine (#264 - January 1 through February 15)! It's a Laffy Taffy parody written by Fred Wheaton, painted by Neil Camera. I believe if you send a SASE with your request, the editor, Les Davis will mail one out to you! See thewrappermagazine.com for more details.

UPDATE: Les Davis has asked me to post the following message for people interested in purchasing the Wrapper postcard promo:

Due to the incredible response for the new Wacky Postcards from The Wrapper magazine and my time filling orders(plus Paypal fees), I must increase the cost of the (2) Wacky postcards from $1.50 to $2 via Paypal...or $3.50(from $3) for the (2) Wacky postcards plus the current Wrapper issue with the Wacky article.  Also, no multiple orders or re-orders! Thanks for understanding a guy under siege(ha) and for your patience. --Les Davis, Editor, The Wrapper, thewrappermagazine.com"

Yes it is still around, Les has been cranking this mag. since 1978, I have been a subscriber since #91, But have had to stop for a little while due to other things that involve monetary attention. But may have to get this particular issue since it contains something Wacky related.

My issue came yesterday, but I had worked pretty late, and was too tired to read it (had I realized it included the Wacky article, I'd have managed :) ).  Read this post just now and ran for envelope thinking there would be a postcard in it, but I see it's a mail-away.  It's a good article, and I'm looking forward to another Wacky item in the mail!  I'll have to take care of this after work tonight.  Thanks Neil, Fred and Les!!

I just sent $3.00 to Les and I can't wait to see the article and postcard. I have never heard of The Wrapper...so thanks to Neil for posting about this release. I am very excited about this. I have gotten to where I almost like the postcards more than the stickers. I think the larger size agrees with my aging eyes better.

Someone get ready to update the master list.

I subscribed for awhile and look forward to checking out a new issue.

I got the impression from Les' email that it was two copies of the same postcard. I went ahead and bought the WRAPPER issue as well... its probably been 10 or 11 years since I subscribed and am curious as to what it looks like these days. Like someone else indicated, it was a good source for Wacky's before the internet really became so accessible. The downside is that the advertisers remained fairly stagnant and if you subscribed much more than a year, you were basically seeing the same items for sale over and over again. Plus, once you got used to email, the snail mail pace of much of the correspondence associated with the sellers/traders advertising in the WRAPPER was demotivating. I am sure that has changed.

I did. It's a nice one page article on the PCs. Not much new ground for forum members, but it does mention that PC series 8 will have "many more than just six cards in the set". The opposing page has some black and white images of some of the 2011 Halloween PCs.

Here's a link to the author's website:

And one for the Wacky PC checklist (courtesy of our own RawGoo, I believe):

And finally, one for the article itself:

err, the info about that first set is wrong - there wasn't a bonus card, and certainly not one that changed between the limited and unlimited releases.
and the info on the first halloween set is a bit off too.

Les mentioned in an email that he got lots of requests from Wisconsin (where I live).  Had no idea there were many Wacky collectors in the Badger state, but I guess that just goes to show we have good taste in this state.

Wow, it's like some collectors that aren't in the loop just go crazy when they see a new item they aren't familiar with, thinking it must be super rare or something.  What a waste of money!

It's been 2 weeks and I still haven't seen mine.  I think I confused Les because I renewed my Wrapper subscription and added the extra money for the postcards on top of that payment.  I gave him a note with my paypal payment and sent him an email which he acknowledged, but after exchanging several emails with him he seemed confused.

Did you ever receive your postcard? I have not, even though Les said he'd send out another one in case mine got lost in the mail.

Get this: I had actually forgot about it till yesterday, so I wrote to him and he replied saying yes he sent out a replacement, and is wondering if I'm pulling his leg but will send out one more. He also put me on his blacklist!! I guess I can't really blame him, if he really did send out 2 others... I'm going to check with a neighbor that sometimes gets our mail mis-delivered, just in case. I replied to Les and said don't bother sending another, that I will get one from a forum member instead.

So... if anyone has an extra one to sell me, please let me know. I would at least like one in my collection.

Mine finally came in a little postcard sized envelope but had no protection around the cards so the corners got dinged up.

I agree, still it seemed strange to me since he knows the trading card biz.  I would have rather paid for it and had it well protected.  Fortunately mine isn't too bad.

I'm glad i'm not the only one who has had problems with the Wrapper Postcards. I wasnt going to say anything cause so many people were praising Les, that I thought I was just the exception. But as usual if it involves me, it has to be a notch higher.  Word for word...

"Hi Les,    I am writing to you about the newest WRAPPER mag and WACKY postcard promo.  I looked on your site for a listing to buy this issue and order the promo. I was unable to find that page to order. Can you please help me i would love to get a 1 year sub. and order form for the promo. Any help would be appreciated."

His reply...

"Hi Jim- You can Paypal $24 for a one year sub and I will also include (2) Wacky postcards at no charge. Paypal to my email address: leswrap@xxxx.net or call with cc numbers: 630-877-xxxx. Thanks- Les"

2 weeks later...

"Hi Les,  I received my 1st issue of my year subscription. I did not get any Postcards, are they going to be in a separate envelope?

Thanks for the help,

Jim"

Again, his reply...

"Hi James- You didn't read my announcement on p.8. However, since you subscribed in part to get the postcards, I will send 2 out tomorrow to you."

I got them a few days ago, in the same small envelope with no protection, 2 of the 4 corners are Bent!, and the kicker...they are covered in printers ink and there is no gloss. These were rejects CLEARLY! I cant help but feel Les Thinks he did me a favor by sending me this garbage after i went the extra mile and ordered the Mag for a year and not just that issue.  >:D

It seems like a crap shoot. Enjoy the mag....not!

Interesting... It could be that Les did not anticipate the obviously overwhelming response for postcard requests.

Thanks go out to forum member sunsweat for offering me a postcard at no charge. Wacky Forum members rule!

That's funny because I had the same exact response from him, about not reading page 8.  He kept referring to page 8 and making it sound like I wasn't following directions or something.  When I first sent him the money for the order I couldn't have been more clear about the fact that I added the extra money for the postcards, and he didn't say anything.  Very strange.  At least I know I wasn't alone in my experience!  haha

Wow, I sent him three dollars in an envelope, received the items in a timely manner, yes the postcards came in an envelope the same size, but in perfect condition. Maybe the cold hard cash helped.

I had no problems at all, and what does Bill Belichick have to do with anything?

Page 8 tells how to get the Postcards. And NO repeat orders! So do i get blacklisted for a repeat order, or do i just forget ever wanting the postcard?

So now i have no legible postcard!

I just got a mailing/advert today for the Wrapper with a yellow slip of paper that reads "3 Free Wacky Postcards with your $20 subscription." The advert did mention that Neil Camera will have a Wacky/Topps column. I assume that means in each upcoming issue.

Per Les:

"The Wrapper magazine exclusive Wacky Postcards('Loaffy Taffy') are still available at a dollar each(minimum 3 and maximum 8). Please use Paypal to LesWrap@comcast.net  and make sure your street address shows. This offer is for U.S. only. The success of this promotion has prompted Topps to plan another Wacky postcard for 'down the road.' Thanks to all! --Les Davis, The Wrapper"

I take the advert to mean that Neil has an article within issue #265, nothing more

I didn't get any. Wasn't sure if there were any left and whether it was too late to send Les the money via PP.

Is Issue #265 which will have a Neil column the next one to come out? I can't find the issue I purchased with the postcards.  We can prebuy just the next issue correct? I would not want to miss out on Neil's something extra.

I got my issue #265 today, and Neil's new column is in there.  Unfortunately, it refers to Old School 3 already having been released........  darn printing deadlines!!

Just a suggestion, he will probably ask you to send in a postage paid addressed envelope to mail them in, and I would use a photo mailer or something with protection.  He will send them in a regular thin envelope and mine came in with dinged corners.

So I am digging up this old thread as I try hard not to create redundant threads.  I found my stash of Wrapper Magazines starting with issue #175 dated Nov 200 going to issue 247 Jan 2010.  61 magazines in all, missing 184, 188, 194, 197, 198, 200, 201, 203, 208, 210, 228, 246.  These are well preserved as they have been preserved in a sealed plastic bin all these years.

I see sold auctions on ebay for back issues ranging $3 and up per issue, had no idea there was a market for these.  Prefer to sell as one lot if anyone is interested.  Will probably list on ebay in about a week if not sold before then.

Wow... saw this post & checked out the website and it looks like Les is still doing the Wrapper.  Amazing.  Cool dude, so I'm glad he's still able to do it.  I miss "The Wrapper" and "The Recycler".  The only 'newspapers' I read in the 90s, really.  Cheers to Les!
