3 hours before auction end one of them decides to start running it up.  The day before the auction ended, the other guy ran it up.  The winner put his high bid in days before auction end.  Is the new stupid to run up auctions long before auction end instead of sniping?

YUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUP!

Yikes!  Looking at the bid history, it was apparently 3 bidders that really wanted this item.

The same winner is the high bidder on the 1980s Bubble Yum.

Apparently s/he has a ton of money because every item in their 30-day bid history is the highest bid

This auction isn't over as of right now but this is crazy for a 1980's item, even if it does say "Wacky' Fruit:

Not sure if this guy is nuts or not. Seller named monkeydogz has a very beat up but completely full of 48 packs OS Ten on e-bay for $2,500. I believe OS packs contained 2 stickers, so 96 stickers. Even if you pulled 3 complete sets (super unlikely) you could buy 3 sets with Pupsi for about $450….so the box is worth $2,000?

IMO, I don’t think you’re taking into account that this is unopened material. Is $2500 a good number? Not sure. But, what is offered is certainly worth more than the $450 you came up with. Kind of a “worth more than the sum of its parts” sort of thing.

I concur with Big Tumi.  It is real hard to find unopened materiel out there.  It could be worth 2500 to the right person as I have seen packs sell for over 50 dollars a pack.  Me, I am closer to the 1.5 -2k range on its value

If you do, then it's the one I dropped, and I want it back!  And I can prove that it's mine because it has the winning numbers, duh?

That’s not crazy. Given that the box isn’t in great shape I would say more like $1200….the packs look very fresh and nice.

He doesn’t seem to understand that 10ths really aren’t worth more than 7ths.

Im just surprised how much unopened OS packs and boxes go for. Given the finite and shrinking number of collectors, there must be a few White Whales buying these listings ….or no one is…

wackys are in transition just like (for an example Mars attacks or 3 Stooges). What I am getting at is most people that collect those series are not the same people that bought them off the store shelves.  Wackys are shifting from us 55-60 year old people to younger people.  It just takes a little while for the change.  The only problem is a lot of people don 't have any connection to cards.  So it makes it hard.  The SI set did introduce people to wackys and as things change the vintage will be wanted.  Take a look at Davy Crocket cards.  Even though the majority of people who bought these new have passed on,  there is still demand for them.  However the more worn copies are still not worth that much.  This is sort of what I feel will happen with our beloved wackys.  I though will have my keeper set and will pass on the other sets I have.

Joe - I have my doubts that wackys will ever become sought after by younger collectors. It happens with baseball cards because they were continuously published over generations. Wackys were a short term niche product that was extremely popular with people in maybe a five year age window. I just don’t see how younger people would ever be interested enough to collect seriously.

My kid enjoys helping me collect….but mostly for the “get the complete set” thing. She has no connection to MOST of the products…..

I do see your point and that is why I compared them to "Davy Crocket cards". They are still collected, however the original collectors are most likely gone.  Wackys will never be like baseball cards, but with the new items (SI) it does help to expose people to them.  People are going to be surprised when they think their cards are worth X and they only get Y.  You can see this with all the rarer cards showing up.  I know that I pay up for high grade cards however that is also coming down as my last auction I purchased many PSA 10's way under what I would of paid a few years ago.  (I just enjoy them so I will continue to upgrade them)

That is exactly the scenario I anticipated years ago. 15 years ago I was hot to buy full boxes and other expensive items. But the older I get, I am backing off of a lot of that. And I think that is somewhat typical of what happens as collectors age. I just am not sure how many buyers there are for a $5K+ full box at this point. Certainly a few, but it just is nothing like it was 15 years ago.

Of course with unopened sports cards, it is hotter than ever with buyers of all ages for vintage unopened.

Why? What percentage of OS material (of the millions of stickers/packs sold and thousands of display boxes) was not opened nor discarded over the last ~50 years? I don't know exactly, but I'd suspect it's extremely low. VERY few folks bought a box and just kept it as is all this time. At least to me, this is a case where rarity DOES reflect value.

That is exactly right. Most of the value in unopened material has little to do with the value of the contents, except if a particular star card is visible.

I know many of you don't like Ebay, but I like to look to see what is out there and what people think they can get for some wackies.

However, you also need to look at the S & H costs.

For example: https://www.ebay.com/itm/265911488793?hash=item3de98f5119:g:UZMAAOSwaQZjCNqq

$84.88 for Economy Shipping?!?!?

$939.21

Actually when I clicked on the See Details link, it was $91.31.  I think I would pay the extra $7 to get it to me quicker.

I'm guessing that it's a typo.  I used a USPS calculator to estimate the cost of shipping a standard medium size box of 11" x 8-1/2" x 5" weighing one pound from Houston to my zip code and the price was...drumroll...

$8.49

which suspiciously looks like they forgot to divide their $84.88 by 10 - or maybe they just mark everything up by 10, in which case they really are nuts!

S&H has apparently been reduced. It is now showing only $76.44 economy.

A seller has a “rare” uncut sheet of First Series Re-Issues listed for $1,100! Aren’t these sheets super common, worth about $50??? It looks like it is an original printers sheet marked with lines fir the cuts….does that make it more valuable???

Those look like the standard lines on any uncut sheet, so no it's not rare.  These used to sell for $9.99 for a time after a ton of them (literally?) were found in a warehouse.
