Wacky siblings?
« on: April 20, 2025, 06:58:14 AM »
When members were young, in the Glory Days of Wackys, did anyone’s siblings collect them? I have a brother two years older and one two years younger, and neither had the slightest interest in Wackys. I am wondering if the sweet spot for coming of Wacky Age was that narrow, or if my brothers just were not intelligent and subversive enough to appreciate them…

My sister liked them a little bit, but I think it was more that she wanted what her big sister had, and my mom obliged.  When it came to spending our own money on them, she chose horses and other dolls, whereas I would spend all of my allowance and birthday money on them!  But for a while at least, we both had a Wacky Plack and a tee shirt.  I had Blunder Bread, and she had Koduck, and mom had to get them in the boy's department.  Even better, when she stopped caring about it I inherited her plack  ;)

Sure my older brother Dan, who was one grade ahead of me, collected them as well.  He even wrote some when we were kids.  He still loves it when I send him some of the newer ones but doesn’t seek them out on his own.

My younger brother was a bit of a copycat for the same reason. He wasn't the fanatic I was, but we both bought some of the reprints.

I remember trading Series 6's with the Bradley brothers. If memory serves, they weren't twins but ended up in the same grade. They were in competition, and I was supplying them both.

I was actually exposed to them in '73 due to my younger brother (he was 9). We both collected them for a year or so and then other things pulled us away. In 2001, when I found my OS stack in my old desk drawer, that's when I got back into them (I had a full 5-10 run minus just a few stickers) and within a couple of months, my brother found his stack and gave them all to me. He had a Bum and Choke and about a dozen third whites (no, we lived nowhere near St. Louis). He didn't charge me, though I would've given him something for them. Just lost him a couple months ago to a heart attack.  :'(

I think it’s a matter of kids that age not being equipped to stay focused on one niche interest for very long.  As much as I loved them and kept coming back to them, there were also large gaps where other things must have distracted me away from Wackys.  I can say without a doubt that getting into superhero comic books for the first time in early fall 1975 caused me to miss the 14th Series entirely.
