Steve, it’s neat that in the vintage bottle you found the sauce is brown.  Makes the match to the Wacky that much closer.  The smoke is a nice solution to the common problem of filling a card with a narrow, vertical product.  I recently came across this issue in a painting I did and my solution was fine but not nearly as unique and fun as this one.  Also the hole in the cap is another nice touch.

LOL! The brown sauce in the vintage bottle might have been a brighter orange at one time, like the sauce in the new bottle image. The vintage bottle image was from an eBay auction. Many times, ebay is my go-to source for original packaging images.

Yes, being both an aficionado of hot sauces and a pack rat that keeps things way too long, I can confirm that sauces like Tabasco oxidize over time and turn brown upon exposure to air as they age. Brown Tabasco generally means it is old, although it usually tastes fine. Just like apple slices a few minutes after you cut them!

This next one on the checklist fell flat with me (pun intended). Dr. Pooper, a parody of Dr. Pepper.

They probably wanted to avoid using toilet humor with a poop joke, but this parody is making doctors look like nerds or something. The dents and drips on the can don't make any sense. Plus, the word "Flaver" is spelled wrong on top.

Dr. Pupper would have been a better idea, showing a cute little dog with a stethoscope around it's neck, wearing a lab coat.

We did get some good Wackys with this soda, however: Dr Popper, Dr Peeper (in the Wacky Cans), Dr Pester, and Dr Puffer Fish.

I also know of two that weren't made; Dr Pecker (for ANS5) by Neil Camera and Mr Pepper by Mark Parisi.

But you're right, Dr Pupper would make a good Wacky, and so would Dr Pipper.

Coast is a really tough one to parody, and Ghost is by far the best option. I enjoy gags that come out of the packaging most, but for a design restricted to the outline of the product, it is a very solid visual. Anytime you can work in Halloween elements is a bonus too!

I love Ghost, and think it's an excellent Wacky.  Nice ghost character, too.   :great:

Perfect example of not having to stretch to far for a gag, not all products are this easy, or good.

Load up your trunk with these mints! Next is Velaphants, a parody of Velamints.

The Wacky looks a lot better than the real mints!  Love the elephant pic, and the taglines aren't bad, but the title just seems a little off, with the "V" in front of the name.  Maybe it is just me  :-\

This is my favorite type of Wacky, where something unexpected pops out of the packaging. The trunk grabbing for a mint is cute, and the secondary gags are all supportive. This is the kind of stuff I shoot for in my designs, although it makes kiss cutting a pain in the a$$!

Next on the 1985 series checklist is Peter Panic, a parody of Peter Pan Peanut Butter.

I thought this was a decent Wacky that should have been done sooner.  Another "easy" product name to parody, practically a gimme!  Good taglines, but I don't get "spread it on your shoes."

Pat, if you want to see how many times Peter Pan Peanut Butter has been done and under what names, just check out Reply #36 on pg. 2 of "What is the most parodied product among all Wackys?". There's not as many as you think there are. In fact, there's only six - five Wackys and a Wonky, in that order.

This may be some obscure contemporary reference, but I always thought it was just something a person not in his right mind might do.

Call me a stickler, but I don't like it when airbrush is used as a fast space filler. This card would've looked more "Norm-ish" if they'd hand painted the jar contents instead of zapping it with a quick spritz of airbrush. Other than that, the gag and art are solid.

Yeah, the artwork for this one reminds me of something you would see in Fleer Crazy Labels.

Also the characters have the same ‘non-Saunders’ line-art look as several OS titles such as OS6 Jerkens soap, Sneer detergent, Snarliament, yes Peter Pain, and several others.  Much has been made of this in the past.  Personally it doesn’t affect my opinion of OS titles to a great degree, but to others it might be more important, which of course could also carry over to later sets.  My only gripe with Peter Panic would be the change in product label graphics 1985 vs 1974, which of course has nothing to do with the execution of the parody.  I just like the 70s vibe of OS product graphics.

The next one is fun to discuss - Bananacin, a parody of Anacin. Before this 1985 set parody, Fleer had a similar parody in their Crazy Labels, using the box instead of a bottle. While Google searching, I discovered a new Asian fruit snack called Bananacin, but no connection to the parody whatsoever.

Top tier Wacky for me. It's just fun to say. An x and I used to laugh about taking any painkiller cause we called them all Bananacin.
We did the same with Donkey Nose.

And I wonder if the fruit snack tastes like bananas?

they're dried banana chips, as pictured on the package, so I hope so

they do have flavor options, per the boxes below, and this one is cheese
others are green tea, chocolate, coffee, milk

I used to buy these back in high school, and yes, they do taste a lot more like bananas than a typical "fruit flavored hard candy."

I remember our Biology teacher putting these out in petri dishes to attract fruit flies, but I don't remember what we did with them.

Thanks, Patrick, I couldn't read what was on the bag. What language is on there, anyway? It looks like one from somewhere in Southeast Asia, which I guess, is where the chips come from.
