Who Knew????
« on: June 18, 2024, 02:19:51 PM »
OK I just saw this on eBay and was floored!  Someone, who specializes in underground art from the 60s/70s has listed a group of 4 roughs for sale.  Three are by Jay and among them is a Jay I had I had never seen before (Cricket Junk) but the fourth is by underground artist extraordinaire Skip Williamson!!!  Who knew that he ever submitted Wacky roughs to Topps? So that’s a fifth 60s underground artist who touched (briefly) our beloved Wacky Packages.  Too cool!

Wow! great spot!
I would love to see that Cricket Junk become a reality at some point. The more you eat the more you can't!

with the other two -
I've previously seen that hard to read b&w scan of the Gallstones rough that's out there, so this is fantastic to see the color version.
I don't think I've seen Tushy Roll before though. I know there's the Tom Bunk Tushie Roll that's a lost 90's title, and looks nearly nearly the same, but this one is new to me.

I really like the Fred Flintstone on Gallstones.

So these were sketched up in 1976? Would have been cool to see another Cracker Jack parody, since Cracked Jerk was only released in the die-cuts set.

But I totally can understand the rejection by Topps due to potential C&D complaints.

Looking back to the die-cut, it looks like there was supposed to be copy underneath the "Cracked Jerk" title that was whited out for some reason.

Patrick absolutely it's great to see Jay Gallstones in color and hi-res.  I found this image and it's interesting to see how close Jay stuck to the original package.

Back in the 90's, some of us collectors at a Chicago non-sports show accompanied Jay back to his apartment where he showed off a bunch of his roughs and whatnot.  I wasn't able to stay for long, but it was fascinating to see some of his work.  I've pretty much forgotten all that I saw now (though if I saw some things, it might ring a bell), but the one I never forgot was Tushy Roll.  Maybe not the classiest Wacky of all time, but it definitely left an impression on me.  Wish I had taken pics of that very cool experience.

Tootsie Roll company should produce a novelty roll of toilet paper just like Jay's sketch. It could even be Tootsie Roll scented.
