Neil's Wacky Sketch Cards
« on: April 06, 2024, 01:34:03 PM »
Im starting a new thread featuring some of my sketch cards from past and present. Here's the first part (moved from thread, "20th Anniversary Wacky ANS")...
Modify message

Wow, those are some incredible sketches!  Hard to pick a fave, but I love mashups and the one with Jolly Mean and Virginia Slums is out of this world!

Glad you like it! I really enjoy painting those mashups!

I'll see if I can find some of the other mashups I did for ANS. Stay tuned...

Neil I was just thinking about your sketches as my fav sketch from ANS 10 is one of your wonderful card sized Norm reproductions!  How far did you get in doing all his original Wackys as sketches?

Wow Pat that second sketch, which I assume is 4” by 6” seems to encompass the entire history of classic Wacky postcards in one incredible image!

Not many of us could afford any of these. You either had to get real lucky to pull any ANS sketch or spend thousands to try and pull one. Most were sold on e-bay and priced way to high. It is nice to see somebody has them.

They are actually both large sketches, and I was extremely fortunate to have pulled these from packs!  I can't recall ever pulling a sketch from an ANS pack.

Imagine if the artwork on the Wacky Packages base cards was that colorful and detailed like these sketches!

I don't want to nitpick, but some of the artists working on them today just don't have the Saunders-esque vision. Only a few artists capture that vintage quality!

Speaking as one of the artists on the new sets, I can say that at least I am not trying to recreate 1970s humor or images. I certainly respect what has come before, and often look to it for inspiration, but art is constantly evolving. What we create today is a product of our modern experiences and is more than simply aping the past. I think many of our collectors are so tunnel vision-focused on the past that they fail to see the high quality and humor of the new sets. When the 2024 cards come out, I encourage you all to really look at them and laugh at them like a kid would instead of just stuffing them into page protectors or searching furiously for sketch cards. You might just be amazed at what you've been overlooking!

Jim no doubt.  The sketch odds on retail Wackys started out just Wacky!  Luckily they keep bringing on more and more sketch artists and by ANS 10 they were guaranteed in one $70 collectors box.  That was my favorite way to score ‘em.  Also constant eBay hunting enabled me to nab a few at reasonable prices but certainly luck was a big part of it!

Steve well we’re all here because of the magic Norm brought to his work.  Certainly without Norm the brand would not have captured the imagination of so many fans and artists alike.  I do see a little bit of Norm here and there with each new set that comes out but yes, his singular vision is truly special and unique!

I believe only Kitten Chow Mein (Chenduz) was not a pack pull.

Part 2 coming soon, including the very first official Wacky Packages sketch card! Can anyone guess what series it was from?

By the way, I may be straying a bit from the original topic (20th Anniversary of All New Series). Should I start a new thread? All in favor, say aye...

Sure, but maybe include some of the posts that include cool sketches?

My guess will be the very first Postcards set  :D

Now this is very intriguing.  The very first Wacky sketch!  Well I assume it was never released and that it pre-dates your first “official” Postcard set from 2007. Well if it isn’t as Pat guessed the first ever Postcard sketch, what else could it be? Wasn’t there only ANS before that?

Didn't Jay do a Spitterman sketch? That was an early one, no?  Of course not Neil's first, but didn't that predate the postcards? I really don't know.

You're correct, Jay drew some art cards that were very similar in nature, but weren't official Topps sketch cards. The very first ones were from Wacky Postcard Series One.

Hmm, Jay did the entire run of ANS 3 in 2007 that were sold via Toppsvault auctions.
Depending on definitions, I think these were the first official ?

They weren't  an official part of ANS but something the Topps Vault sold separately as "art cards". Plus,  I dont believe they carried any logos or copyright info. Definitely a precursor to the sketch cards, but not official.

Yep, that was another banner series for sketches!!  The incredibly detailed house with the ghost and "Post Mortem" on the mailbox is in my special binder of postcard sketches.
