Hello from Rusty's son (of Lost Wackys)
« on: December 20, 2023, 02:01:30 PM »
Hey all,

My name’s Tory and Rusty was my dad. I saw in another thread that someone found my Facebook post, but I wanted to let you all know that he passed away on November 13th.

You can read his obituary here: https://www.newcomercincinnati.com/Obituary/270564/

I can see that quite a few people noticed his absence over the past few years, so I wanted to let you guys know what happened.

In March of 2019, he had a brain aneurysm and a stroke that unfortunately left him disabled and unable to use a computer. He spent almost a month in the ICU, then the next 6 months or so in a nursing facility until his wife/my mom, Mary, decided to become his caregiver and bring him home. He was making improvements with rehab, but the pandemic put a major hold on his therapies for obvious reasons.

We had to renovate their house to make it wheelchair accessible, and in that process, we sort of put all his important looking stuff in a big pile in the basement.

I’ve been slowly going through his things since he passed, which is what led me here. I’m currently hunting for his laptop with the hopes that my uncle can restore it and recover some of his passwords and files.

His Wackys are also a top priority in what I’m looking for in the basement (they’re there, just not sure where.) I know he had an extensive collection and some rare ones.

My uncle requested to keep a few for the memories, and I’ll probably do the same, but otherwise I think we will sell most of them so actual collectors can enjoy them and to make some money to support my mom who has brain cancer.

Is this a good place to do that, or at least to start?

I’ve also seen people on here talking about issues with links on the Lost Wackys website. If we’re able to recover his passwords and get into the back end of the website, is there anyone here who’d like to help fix it up? I can do basic web dev, but all I really know about Wacky Packs is that the art is cool and my dad collected them :] so I might need someone with more knowledge to make sure things are correct.

Anyway, hopefully I can find his collection within the next week or two and start sorting through and listing things at the beginning of the new year.

I hope everyone’s holiday season is going well (or at least better than mine is  ;))

Best,
Tory

Hi Tory,

Thank you for reaching out to the forum community! As you mentioned, your dad was an integral part of the wacky packages scene for many years and a large group of us relied on his input to keep us informed about the latest releases. He was especially keen on keeping up with production concepts and unpublished material from the All New Series era. In fact, his website is an important resource for collectors and historians alike. Needless to say, we're all very sorry to hear about your dad but happy that you're keeping his legacy alive. If you decide to part with any cards or art, this is a great place to get an honest assessment. Most of the people here have known each other for years, so we keep each other honest. Take care and thanks again for letting us know about Rusty. He is truly missed.

That's good to know! I'll bring everything here first for sure. Thank you for the kind words, I appreciate it.

Thank you, Tory, for coming to this forum and telling yours and Rusty's story.  I read his obit and he sounds like he was an amazing man.  I don't recall interacting with him personally, but I did appreciate all the work he put into his website and I know many others did as well.

As Koduck mentioned, I'm sure folks here would be willing to help you understand what your dad had and either how to effectively list them on ebay or get an sense of what they are worth.  I certainly don't consider myself an expert, but am happy to offer my perspective on what they are and/or are worth (or when I simply don't have much of an idea).

My condolences to you and your family on the loss of your dad.  I wish and hope for peace and fond memories as you deal with the immediate aftermath of his passing and as time passes.

Hi, Tory. You have my sympathy on your father Rusty's death. Please express the same to your mother as well.

I really liked his website and used it quite often, especially when helping out first Mitch (Lavirus), and then Patrick (Fanatical_and_Sickly) with things on the Master Spreadsheet, particularly real names of Wackys.

A lot of that artwork, I noticed, has gone over to a new website named the Wacky Packages Wiki. It seems to be in good hands.

I recommend that you take a look at said Spreadsheet on this website, an ongoing work in progress for sure. I know you'll like it and I also know Rusty would've liked it, too.

First my condolences on the loss of your father and prayers for your mother.

We will all do our best as a community to help you navigate the next steps if it is your desire to sell some of his items.
Selling directly to Forum Members can save you from the fees of eBay (Pirate's Bay - Arghhhhhh Matey!).

Let us know how we can help.

Merry Christmas to you and your family,

Richard
