David,
When are you going to hold the drawing for over 3 sets purchased?

Hey all, been under the weather for a bit and am catching up on my work so I need to delay it until this weekend when I have my first chance at some free time. I'll post results and email/PM people here and on FB when the results are in. Smokin and I contributed a number of roughs and final art to the raffle.

I"m surprised that these haven't sold out yet on Topps.com.

I wonder if it is due to lack of demand or overproduction and what that bodes for future releases.

Wow, that is really surprising!  I wonder if they made more or demand has simply fallen.  Seems like previous series sold out much faster than this, but I certainly could be wrong.

Very little of this showing up on e-bay also.

I reiterate this completely.

Received my art today. It's the first time I've seen an original piece and am very impressed.  Thank you very much!  :great:

Love my "Cape Clod" pencil. It's a bit confusing though as it looks like it is drawn and dated by David on 2/17/13. So that would line up with AND 10 or 11? But Cape Clod doesn't show up until the Monthly Series in September 2021. But that is different artwork and done by Joe Simko. Do concepts sometimes get handed over to other artists? Once the artist turns the concept in, is it the property of Topps? Can they then do what they want with it?

For what it's worth I like the concept of the boat running into the lighthouse a bit better in the pencil rough I have by David.

Thanks to David for doing this... very cool!

The explanation is that Dave's sketch and the final painting aren't directly related. It is very common for two artists to come up with the same/ similar ideas. Paul Harris and I seem to do it constantly! I probably have a few dozen drawings I've done that duplicate existing Wacky ideas either before, after, or simultaneously with publication. It can be frustrating, but it is also fun to see how someone else fleshed out the same concept you had. I drew the rough that the final Cape Clod painting was based on, and it follows the rough drawing very closely.

Cool, thanks for the explanation. I can't find the version that David did, so I'm guessing that for now it is a "Lost Wacky" :]

The Wackys that reach consumers are just the tip of the artistic iceberg, in a manner of speaking. Topps accepts about 20% of the roughs I submit for publication. Although they've printed a little over 500 of my ideas, there are about 3,000 I've drawn! Most of those will never see the light of day! It is the same with the other artists that draw Wackys. Rarely we will get a peek behind the curtain when someone comes across a stash of drawings and posts them where everyone can check them out. I've seen scans of Jay Lynch's early stuff on Greg Grant's site, and it includes some that never became official Wackys. Worth looking at!

Dave's version never took the step from concept to final painting for some unknown reason. It exists only as the rough that you are now the proud owner of. It is true that some old designs that were not originally accepted by Topps have resurfaced in an unofficial capacity as "Lost Wackys", but they exist in a gray area where they aren't totally kosher and so new editions should not be expected. Thanks for sharing your prize!

It's cool to see the initial concept work. I'd love to go shopping with you guys just once. I'm sure you see the aisles in quite a different light then most people. Cheers!
