SDCC 2023
« on: July 19, 2023, 05:44:47 AM »
With the 2023 in person San Diego Comic-Con ready to happen July 19-23, 2023 despite TV/movie related panels backing out due to the WGA and SAG/AFTRA strikes, I bet Topps is or is not at the 2023 SDCC, but if it is, will Topps have any Wacky Packages related giveaway promo cards, maybe to promote the due before 2023 ends Wacky Packages Old School Series 11 (hoping for 1990's Wacky spoofs mixed with more 1970's and 1980's product spoofs)?

When was the last time Wacky Packages got any attention at SDCC? A few promos might have been handed out. Maybe SI had a booth promoting the minis.

I think the last promo was for Flashback II in 2008, and the last item sold there were the Cereal postcards in 2015.

In 2017 at the SDCC Topps gave away a Wacky Package card that was a Wacky Pack take on an Archie comic book.

I was hoping Old School 1990's would feature a spoof of Archie's Sonic the Hedgehog comic book from the 1990's!

That card was only sold online, and was not at the show, as far as I recall

Ah, I see one on eBay. It's not in the Master List, should it be? It says "2017 Summer Convention No. 6" on the back, there was also RoboCorpse (No. 5).

I just looked up that Itchie image on ebay as well.  Don't recall it at all, nor the RoboCorpse (at least not by name).

Robo Corpse was a parody of Robo Cops. I'll dig it up and post a picture...

They’re Currently listed in the 2016/2017 Online Print On Demand Master List. With pictures.
I started putting some of these old Online cards into the Google Docs spreadsheet, still have more to go.

Ah, right, I've never known how to feel about those. Maybe you should just add them on another tab?

So reporting from the con indeed Topps was there, they are always part of the Lucasfilm pavilion and their new Star Wars offering was well represented.   No Wackys though.  On the bright side I did get to meet Bill Griffith and my son and I had a great chat with him.  He was also gracious enough to do a quick Milk Mudds sketch for me and sign a few stickers.  Here are pics.

Pete yeah well he had a lot to say and it covered a wide range of topics to be sure.  MAD magazine and Lenny Bruce came up a few times.  He told me Will Elder and Ernie  Buschmiller (who he just did a bio on called ‘Three Rocks’ which you can and should snag on Amazon now!) are his two favorite cartoonists.  Obviously he was devastated by Jay’s passing and then the recent passing of Justin Green, Aline Cominsky-Crumb and Bill’s wife Diane so he’s feeling time especially hard right now.  He did tell me that Kentucky Fried Fingers was his favorite Wacky he did the rough for.  Also that it was pulled back in the day because kids were sticking them “all over” signs at KFC.  I don’t recall having heard that before so I’ll let the historians on the forum comment on the veracity of that!  As you can imagine I was a bit star struck by the whole thing and it was truly the highlight of the con getting to meet him!

One more thing.  I also asked him who’s idea it was to make Milk Mudds character a pinhead since that wasn’t the way he drew it in the rough.  He said Oh I thought I had drawn it that way but if not he honestly had no idea who did it. So with Jay gone this may be a Wacky mystery that goes unanswered.  Now if anyone ever meets Art Spiegleman or Len Brown they would be the only people left who might know the answer.
