Luxury boxes
« on: March 04, 2023, 04:34:35 PM »
The totally awesome story from the guy who bought full boxes of OS for a brief period in the 70s, and then re-sold the gum to classmates got me to thinking…i never even SAW a full box of OS, much less had a couple bucks to buy one. How many of you ever bought a full box of OS, either as a kid or adult? If you bought the last several packs, did the shopkeeper let you have the box? Please include details of said purchases…

I bought a full box of OS15 from the ice cream truck (Northridge, CA).  I opened all the packs, and got a set minus Dynamites.  Never did get that one, until ebay years later, although I was thrilled to pull a reprint and that filled the empty spot in my pages.  Never had the nerve to ask for the empty box when I snagged the last few packs.

I never had the money to buy a box and I don't recall buying last packs and even thinking about taking the box.

Had 3 full boxes at one time, bought a 16th for $1,100 about 20 yrs ago and also had a 10th and 14th. Not sure what I paid for them.

I never bought a full box of any trading cards in the store, but always tried to buy the remaining packs in a box (if I had enough money) and when I did,  made a point to always ask if I could have the box.  They retailer always obliged. I think I had one wacky box (1between 11 and 13th series), but a lot of baseball card boxes.  Ran out of room so finally got rid of them years ago.

I love counter display boxes. They are such a big part of the memory of seeing packs in the store. And sports card boxes are very affordable, or at least they were when I bought most of mine.

Do you own these?

Yes….I have almost complete runs of all four sports from 1971-76, and for baseball, from 1967-76.

In fact, I got that 1967 baseball box at the Allentown show for $75!

I especially like the hockey and basketball boxes because you don’t see them as often.

I think these are better than staring at art!  Do you display them in a display case?

I don’t really display anything, both due to lack of space and not wanting the items to get faded. I have them stored in cabinets, but I still look at them often.

I collected football cards in 1974 mainly and have no recollection of the display box.  Lost my whole collection due to the flooding from a hurricane as they were in my basement for some reason.

Great stuff Dave! I remember buying football & baseball cards in the mid 70s but don't recall any boxes specifically. I do recall getting clear cello multi-compartment packs with some type of header card from the 5&10. They would be hanging by the register. The 5&10 was great for buying turtles for our fish tank back then too!

Those are called “rack packs.” They were made every year for baseball and football, but only occasionally for basketball and hockey….

Not only do I remember my mom buying an unopened box of the first die cuts, my friend and I bought boxes of OS1-OS3. We lived in a neighborhood that had at least 2 wholesalers that handled bubble gum cards as well as candy and restaurant supplies so we paid about $1 a box for the diecuts (and the first Batman and comic book foldees). I can't remember if I ever got a box of wacky ads - they were more expensive per pack if I recall. Unfortunately, I kept none of the boxes or the pre-OS cards!!!!

Great Caesar’s Ghost! Those rack packs remind me that cards and Wackys cost 1 to 2 cents each back in the 70s. 10 cents or 49 cents was SO much money to a kid….

I loved buying the rack packs as a kid because I could guarantee to get some that I needed.  Years later, I saw older rack packs at a card show that were going at a premium based on who was showing on the top or bottom.  I was heavy into baseball cards at the beginning of the junk wax era, so I started saving all of mine that had either a star, rookie, or potential star on them.  Fast forward 30+ years, and I've still got them just sitting around.  I should probably see if I could sell some of them now.  I think though people are leery of rack packs that aren't BCBW wrapped.  There's just too much counterfeiting and alteration going on these days.

Those are the packs. That's how I bought most of my sports cards back in the day, besides the 1977 Yankees Burger King set. I remember working on that set, but I don't remember how they gave them out.

The Burger King cards were in three card cello packs. They were given out free with food. This was done from 1977-1979 I believe.

I remember chasing down the 1977 Yankees set the year before, which was the first year BK did those giveaways.  Pretty sure I completed at least one set if not two.  Which is weird because I don’t remember physically going to BK much at that age.  It wasn’t that close to home.  Maybe I acquired through trades with the regular Topps cards?  Not sure.  There was also a rumor among us neighborhood kids that one of the cards in the set was worth ‘a lot of money’ (something like $10 or so), I think it was Lou Piniella maybe, but I never found out why or if it was even true.  I don’t think current price guides mention any premium value cards in any of those BK sets.  So probably a completely concocted story.

The following year, the 1978 Topps set would become my favorite baseball set of all time, but I was unaware that BK was doing their giveaway thing again.  It wasn’t until years later, when a bunch of ‘78s I’d obtained had one or two Yankee cards with numbers on back that didn’t match the players shown on the checklists for those numbers, that I even figured out they re-numbered them 1-25 or thereabouts for another BK issue.

The 1977 Burger King Piniella is indeed rare. Read the whole story here:

Holy crap I had no idea.  Never heard this story.  The only thing the article doesn’t say is why they’re considered rare (fewer produced I assume), and what one is worth today.  But i’m sure I’m not sitting on a treasure, as all my childhood cards have at least some corner wear from lots of handling.

Thanks for the scoop.  Just 45 years to get to the truth about the infamous Piniella card.  Not that it’s been eating away at me to find out though; I just came around to the belief that it was only a false rumor fueled by overzealous kids.

Speaking of rumors, funny little story that just popped into my head - a kid Eddie I knew in grade school was kind of a pathological liar - he liked to make up stories that would mesmerize the other kids and make him feel important.  I must have brought up the topic of Wacky Packages a few times in school around other kids, and Eddie must have caught wind of it.  He comes up one day and tells me that he either had, or found, some sort of treasure trove of Wackys.  But then he made his fatal mistake - he said one of them was ‘Snot Tissue’.  I didn’t remember many 8th titles, but I did remember Shot Tissue.  So because of that one slip-up, I knew he was full of crap.  Funnily enough, what was once a fugazy title is now a real one, with the creation of Snot Tissue in one of the monthly sets.

An advanced student of Topps would know something was up with a 23rd card…

Because Topps sheets always contain multiples of 11!

Is it still in working condition?  Since those units often went on the blink even in their heyday, it’s hard to imagine a console, joysticks, etc still working perfectly today, some 40 years later.

I never owned Atari as a kid but friends who did had a hard time getting me to go home once we started playing lol.

yes working condition but I haven;t played it in awhile.  Joysticks are the issue, they are poor designed and break easily.
