NFT = Not For Topps
« on: January 04, 2023, 11:35:59 PM »
Michael Rubin's sports platform company Fanatics is divesting its 60% stake in NFT company Candy Digital. It is unclear what Fanatics received for its stake in the company, but Rubin wrote "Divesting our ownership stake at this time allowed us to ensure investors were able to recoup most of their investment via cash or additional shares in Fanatics – a favorable outcome for investors, especially in an imploding NFT market that has seen precipitous drops in both transaction volumes and prices for standalone NFTs."  Rubin cited several factors for Fanatics' divesture which he wrote was a "rather straightforward and easy decision for us to make for several reasons." "Over the past year, it has become clear that NFTs are unlikely to be sustainable or profitable as a standalone business," Rubin wrote. "Aside from physical collectibles (trading cards) driving 99% of the business, we believe digital products will have more value and utility when connected to physical collectibles to create the best experience for collectors." In January 2022, Fanatics acquired Topps trading cards for roughly $500 million after also acquiring the rights to produce MLB trading cards, severing a nearly 70-year partnership between Topps and baseball's top league.

All for the best, as far as I'm concerned. NFTs were a fad, like Pet Rocks, and should fade away just as quickly!

Hot Wheels NFT's are gaining momentum. 4 releases so far. 5 Physical cars for each. Some of the physical cars AND NFT's are selling for over $1K.

I collect decks of playing cards, and last year Bicycle sold an NFT deck with a physical deck included. I wasn't going to splurge on buying an NFT for $300 to get this deck, but I had to get one! Over the last week, these NFT buyers received their physical decks and many are selling on eBay. I was able to buy one for $200. More than I wanted to spend, but it's a really cool deck and it was on my bucket list.

They look pretty nice.  I like the act of playing cards but not "collecting" the cards themselves. I don't think I've ever paid more than $10 for a deck, and I did keep it as a collectible.  It was from the Grand Rivers Casino in Mobridge, SD and had Native Americans in regalia on the face cards.  I never had any idea that playing cards were collectible, and then I saw this on eBay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/404089653579

It looks like posting images isn't working, so here's a link to the deck I bought

That's a nice deck...love the Indian artwork instead of the typical courts. I don't buy decks based on value, just great design, artwork and printing techniques.
I mostly pay anywhere from $10 to $25 on most decks, but the NFT deck I went a little overboard on!

NFM = Not for me.

If I can't hold it in my hand, I don't want it.  I really don't like digital magazine subscriptions and only buy them when they're much less expensive.  Just call me old school.

Nonfungible token digital trophies will be awarded at the Lake Placid 2023 World University Games, the International University Sports Federation (FISU) confirmed, through a partnership with LEVERADE, the Spanish company which was launched as the first sport token and NFT launchpad for leagues and federations such as FIFA, FIBA and the WBSC.

“Digital trophies are a great asset and attraction to capture the public's attention, encourage engagement, and interaction in social networks, and thus attract media attention,” FISU said in its announcement.

Official medals at Lake Placid 2023 will be delivered in NFT format along with a certificate of authenticity while ownership will be recorded in the blockchain. NFTs are unique digital assets that cannot be replicated and can be sold or traded.

Among the benefits athletes can receive through their digital medal include increased visibility on social media to increase their exposure and engagement with the public, as well as sales and sponsorship opportunities to support their finances.

“The agreement reached between FISU and LEVERADE is a big step toward the future of university sports and demonstrates the utilities and possibilities of blockchain technology within the sporting world,” FISU said.

The 2023 Winter World University Games are currently taking place with around 1,400 athletes from 543 universities across 46 countries competing in 85 events. The Games will conclude on 22 January.

Among the benefits athletes can receive through their digital medal include increased visibility on social media to increase their exposure and engagement with the public, as well as sales and sponsorship opportunities to support their finances.

That may be so, but I would be much more impressed when seeing a gold medalist at any type of public appearance, whether on TV or in person, wearing it around their neck.  It's especially inspirational for kids (or us big kids) to be able to hold it or just touch it.  What will they do with the NFT?  Pull out their phone and show us a picture?

I know what you mean; I'm the same way when it comes to books. If I can't hold it, I don't want it. besides, I can't afford e-books anyway.

that being said, it really is sad that home video is being slowly phased out and replaced by streaming. I don't know where I heard this, but word is that Warner Bros. is going to be among the first to dispose of home video. In fact, their MOD web site Warner Archive is already gone.
