Reality check
« on: August 24, 2021, 06:56:09 AM »
I was perusing E-Bay (I know, I know) and came upon a lot of 9 First Series cards, white backs, Spray Nits, Vicejoy, Minute Lice, Tied, Lavirus, Kook Aid, Hostage, Horrid, and Camals that had 37 bids and actually sold for $680! Am I missing something? How on earth could these 9 stickers be worth that much??? Its not like there were 9 Band Aches....

No. Appears to be an irrational bidding war between two overly enthusiastic individuals.

Yeah, I couldn't tell from the 37 bids, how many different bidders there were. Sounds like somebody is going to be suffering some serious Buyer's Remorse...

Here's the link: eBay auction: #114937648331

Only 7 different bidders, and after $143 it was two people bidding.  Some of those cards look very sharp - maybe the last two bidders saw a chance for high PSA grades?

They are sharp compared to the usual crap, but vertical centering appears off on most. Of course, there’s always a good chance the grader won’t understand how they should be vertically centered.

Agreed on the centering, but I would gladly have those in a raw collection (at a lower price, of course).

It should be fun to watch the remaining, similar 3 auctions, one of which includes a Band Ache.

Those prices are out of reach for me, just doing market research...

In this case it could also be referred to "maniac research", depending on your perception of the bidding and the bidders.  (I've been guilty of that myself, but typically only with respect to sketch cards.)

My two cents:   Yes these are very high bids, but if you can separate yourself from the equation there are people out there willing to put up more than you.

I would say that was one of the worst lots from that seller I predict the bandake auction will clear a $1000.

But why? I’m seeing wax stains on the ones that are centered and have nice corners. If the scan can pick it up, is it not too thick to remove from the sticker? Grading it would be moot without doing so…

You can tell someone opened a wax box and put the cards away. Many of the stickers have 85-fold wax stains meaning the sticker was against the seal, which is not uncommon for 1st and 2nd series. They seem to be from a uniform source.

I amend my opinion above, many of these do look very nice and it could be a bidding war between the usual sellers of PSA wackys.

It’s usually pretty easy to remove wax from the fronts.

Yes, upon further review,i will amend my earlier disbelief. I see people asking for $100-200 for first series PSA 7s and 8s….Although at almost $700 for 9 cards, once he pays the slabbing fees, it doesnt seem like there is a ton of profit left to be squeezed….

It isn't always about the profit

That is true. There are probably some of us who just want to see how high the cards might grade at, or complete a graded set…
