Even before Wacky's Norm was an master illustrator. The book that his son David Saunders put out on Norm enlighten me to what a GREAT AMERICAN ARTIST Norm was. Wackys were just the clincher in his long storied career. AMEN!

Hey guys,

Norm's wife is from the same town in Nebraska as I am.  I learned this when I sent David Saunders a Topps candy box flat that Norm's artwork appeared on, so he could have it for his family archives.  Apparently, when David was growing up, the Saunders family would visit that Nebraska town for a time every year.

Beyond that, when Norm retired, he spent his last years living in my hometown and was buried there after his death.  As a Wacky Packages fan, it's odd to think I might have seen him during my late teens, but only recognized him as a stranger, an old gentleman I did not know, and not the creator of so many of my favorie childhood stickers. Someone who I would have certainly wanted to speak to.

I know a lot of music and literature fans will visit the resting place of their idols.  I was considering doing the same, with regards to Norm.  He is buried in my hometown, and I visit every summer.  I always endeavor to be respectful, but would it be morbid to visit Norm's tombstone?  Or take a photo?  Is that taking fascination with an artist too far?

Nah, stick a Wacky on his stone. He seems like the kind of guy who would have got a kick out of it.

I was actually thinking about leaving a pack of Old School there...

I would say the same, I'm sure a Old School sticker. Oddly enough my family would visit NYC for the summer in the late 7o's and would stay 4 blocks from Norms home in NYC. Back when I was a kid I would walk around all the Brownstones in the area so who knows how close i was to him.

I hope he appears on a stamp one day as it would be the ULTIMATE wacky

What city in Nebraska? Sorry I haven't read his biography yet. Just curious how close it is to me.

While visiting my hometown two weeks ago, my brother and I endeavored to track down the final resting place of Norman Saunders, and we managed to do so.  It's odd to think he spent the last few years of his life in the small town I grew up in.

With care, I temporarily placed a few Flashback stickers around his stone, to mark the endurance of his Wacky Packages work, and also laid down an Old School display box, to mark how his work continues to inspire.

My beloved grandparents were only a couple hundred feet to the west of the Saunders', and this journey to find Mr Saunders gave me reason to visit them as well.  It was quite an afternoon.

Though I hesitated at first, I'm hoping that by sharing these two photos I took, no disrespect is felt - as none is intended.

That was a nice thing to do. I wish you could have left the items there though. Maybe stuck the stickers to the stone. It's not defacing if the intention is good. Maybe next time you can stick a few stickers.

That Lipoff is one sweet piece of art.

I think I would try to get someone like Jay to repair the lettering with paint if I owned that.  Of course, Greg would probably have to get his cut.
