If anyone has any PSA graded 16th series for sale or trade I'm looking for the following titles at PSA 9 or higher:

Cracked Lighter

Scoot ( W/Copyright )

Ram-A-Liar

Floral

Real Garbage Candy

Sucker Twin

Sufferin

I'm also looking for Top Row puzzle pieces in PSA 8 or higher

Eric just bought a Clubbed PSA 8 from me last week... hmmm. I didn't see Mike dump any on the bay unless he did it privately and I missed out  :-[

With my puzzle set I rank 3rd on the registry  ;)

I don’t believe he actually sold all his sets, he just retired most of them. Is Eric building a second set?

Wow, the competition is heating up!  I just can't get into PSA puzzle pieces because PSA can't manage to get the orientation right.  I'd rather leave my puzzles in pages.

I think he might have sold one retired set.

I know he sold all the back variation sets, but I think he kept his 1-16.

I actually went so far as to crack out all the ones they encapsulated wrong. I am now collecting puzzles as raw/graded sets and keeping what I like best. If a puzzle piece is otherwise perfect and has a light roller mark, I would rather keep that over an ugly PSA 8.

I can almost understand it with the landscape puzzles, except that they could consider the backs and just be consistent that way.  But, when something like a Series 16 puzzle piece is slabbed upside down it is absolutely maddening!!

Are 16th series Wackys scarce, or just scarce in high grade?

Are 16th series Wackys scarce, or just scarce in high grade?

Most 16ths that are available come from boxes that were opened in the last 25 years by dealers/collectors, not kids. So while 16ths are much scarcer than the previous series, the ones that do exist tend to be in high grade.

In fact, most 16th titles (except the toughest ones) are more readily available in PSA 9/10 than almost all earlier series stickers.

Here are some statistics showing the population of PSA 9 and 10 cards relative to the total number of cards submitted for several different series. Note that after about series 8 (wacky craze winding down) the total number of cards submitted drops off but the percentage of high grade cards relative to total submissions stays pretty constant until series 16, where it is noticeably higher. Note also that the number of total submissions is about the same for series 16 as surrounding series. The difference is, for previous series there are a boatload of lower grade cards that were never submitted to PSA, while a much higher percentage of 16ths were submitted for the reason I stated above.

Series 1   521/5120 = 10.2 %
Series 2  652/4755 = 13.7 %
Series 3  460/2965 = 15.5 %
Series 4  422/2831 = 14.9 %
Series 13 225/1421 = 15.8 %
Series 15 288/1854 = 15.5 %
Series 16 593/1992 = 29.8 %

Fascinating info. I'd guess the bulk of high grade cards submitted to PSA from the earlier series also came from unopened packs opened in the last 20+ years and not from packs opened when the series were originally released, at least based on memories of how I handled my cards as a kid in the 70s (the ones that didn't end up stuck to my headboard, that is).

Some yes, some no. Definitely there is no significant amount of unopened material being opened anymore. That may have been less true 20 years ago. 16ths are definitely the most cost effective packs to open, because in most other cases the likely contents just aren’t worth that much. Tan back series especially rarely come out of packs in gradeable condition.

Twenty years ago, it was fun to go through a whole box of 16ths (a privilege few of us enjoyed as kids). By about 2005, I feared the packs being hunted to extinction. I think Kirk D. had one of the last full boxes.

Conversely, if you want to start a wrapper collection, the 16th should be the easiest one.

That was my second wrapper.  I bought a semi-sealed pack of Series 10 at a local baseball card show in the 80's, making that my first wrapper.

I may still have the wrappers from every single series 16 pack I killed.  I have a shoebox full of them.  I fear selling due to the thieves in our hobby who might be compelled to "create" new unopened packs.
