Is this a Wonder Bread...or no?
« on: August 27, 2019, 06:53:35 AM »
In my continuing quest to rid my sets of wonder bread wackys I have come across a few very tough calls. This Broomo Seltzer for example.

Looking at Greg’s comparison below, I have to say mine doesn’t look exactly like either one. One feature of mine that definitely differs from Greg’s wonder bread scan is that the vertical die cut on the left side of the cap is parallel to the edge of the cap, whereas the wonder bread is slanted. Also the long left diagonal piece of die cut is straight on mine and Greg’s original series one, and curvier on Greg’s wonder bread.

Yet mine doesn’t really have the rounding on the top left of Greg’s original.

I’m starting to think these die cuts are not a completely reliable means of classification in every case.

I may be way off base here but I always assumed that for Wackies printed on sheets where there are multiples of the same Wacky on a sheet, that there was a device (don't know the name) that die cuts the entire sheet at one time. If this is true, it would mean that not all Wackys of the same title are cut by the exact same portion of the cutting device (that I don't know the name of). I always figured that's what accounted for the die-cut variations found in some of the Wacky series. So I don't think we can assume each die cut is EXACTLY the same per title.

For the die cut variations in the 1st series, which are very noticeable, I believe it is because of the 1967 die cut replacements, which then carried over to the 1st series sheet. Titles like Grave Train and Duznt that appear in different sheet positions are instances of this.

But for titles where an entire block of three rows is repeated I don’t think there are different die cuts in that case. Not appreciably different shapes anyway.

I have found all sorts of subtle diecut variations across thousands of stickers which I attribute to just machine cutting variations.  Therefore I am not convinced that is the best way to determine wonderbreads.  Assuming there is any merit to greg's comparison, I think it is a no brainer your PSA is a wonder bread based on the angle cut by the cap edge.

I don’t understand. Mine does NOT have an angled cut by the cap edge.

Based on the picture, you posted, looks almost exactly like the wonderbread cut to me.  Yours is definitely not circular edge especially the left edge.

It looks nothing like the wonder bread cut in the two respects I cited. The area to the left of the cap is parallel to the cap edge in mine. The wonder bread is gradually sloping to the left. The long diagonal piece on the left is a straight line segment on mine. On the wonder bread it gradually curves.

Agree that the vertical part in yours goes straight up but then the curve is hard and not soft so it proves my theory, greg's assertion that diecuts is a reliable way to distinguish the two is not so reliable after all.

Totally agree.
