Richard I am truly blown away by this!  I have never seen a more complete collection of my sketch cards.  It is outstanding!  Now just a minor point Joe Grotesque ain’t me.  I am no Rock Hudson but Grotesque no.  He’s actually a tattoo artist who’s name is Joseph Dobbins.  He’s a GPK guy who did one or two Wacky sketch sets.  When he took the Grotesque moniker I was afraid his work might be confused with mine.  As I don’t believe he’s active doing trading cards for Topps anymore it’s not really an issue.

Joe,

Here's To You!

Pat, thank you so much!  It’s interesting with a few of the Olds sets (Olds 5 included) they limited the sketches to 15 Original Series and 5 from the new Olds set.  Topps actually sent out PDFs with images of the characters they wanted.  So I was on a mission to sneak as many other original series cameos in my sketches as possible.  That Forgers/Ratz one is the latest one I did.

Richard that’s too fun!  For Forgers’s Wacky cameos I tried to have him forging money related Wackys but I found the idea of forging an IOU particularly Wacky!  Here’s a scan of all of ‘em.  In my early sketch sets I stuck to 90% B&W and 10% painted in color.  The painted Forgers reflected the original design and had him forging a dollar.

Richard, looking at my post I realized the story continues.  So I inadvertently used a copyrighted image by having Forger forge the cover of Mad 13 (which I always considered as the first Wacky Pack in a number of ways) so that card was pulled and had to be replaced.  Here’s the replacement I did.

Also some here on the forum might recall at the time this series came out Topps had a media campaign touting Band-Ache as the million dollar painting and offering it for sale at that price.  Not sure what the outcome was but that’s was the impetus to having Forgers forge it!

That was an auction I helped Mike Jaspersen put together. We even did a limited edition postcard for the event. The art didnt sell for the buy it now price but an undsclosed buyer made an offer that was accepted.

Neil, thanks so much for filling in the details.  What a fun story.  I certainly remember the press release about it but never heard the follow up.  Cool to know that Band Ache found a good home.  It was a great publicity stiunt and definitely generated a bit of national news for Wacky Packages!
