I never tried to make a tape but wasted loads of time trying to get good recordings of my favorite songs and DJs so I could mimic them and play the songs whenever I wanted. This was all accomplished in low tech fashion with my Dad's old castoff RCA radio that he gave to us and a Realistic portable tape recorder. Those were the days of "Boss" radio in the early 70's on WFIL with great jocks like Dr. Don Rose, Jim O'Brien, and my personal favorite Tom Dooley....boy were they good. They would most certainly have played this song, one of my definite personal Desert Island Disk top 10 and somewhat of a "forgotten" hit.

I was just listening to this song, this morning. Great song. Cool McCartney-esque bass line.

Frank,

Yes, that is a great song...inane video, but great song; one that has held up very well over the years.
Here's another fav "forgotten" hit by a band I really like a lot. It reached #39 on the Billboard Hot 100 back in '83.

MSB has a lot of catchy straight-ahead "heartland" rock tunes. I first became aware of the band in college when their Heartland album was out. I then quickly got their back catalog and have followed them ever since; would like to see them live sometime. Here's another MSB tune that you might like also. Clarence Clemons played sax on this song on the album.

Heh Heh, that's The Floaters only hit but it did go to number 2 and stayed there for two weeks, unable to unseat Andy Gibbs or The Emotions and tumbling to #19 a week later. It debuted on the Hot 100 at #81 and spent a total of 16 weeks on the chart, earning them a gold record, so somebody liked it. Actually, I'll freely admit I don't mind it a bit.

So....how about some Al Stewart? Everyone knows Year Of The Cat and Time Passages and Year Of the Cat is indeed an awesome song with that great sax part and guitar line but how about this one; it made it all the way to #29 on the Hot 100 and is a personal favorite.

And speaking of Al Stewart, here's one from the Time Passages album that I think is superior to the title
track, even though the title track garnered much more airplay and rose much higher on the charts.

The M. Stanley Band, "He cant love you" is a great song that I have not heard since the 80's. Thanks for resurfacing that one.

My favorite song by Blue Oyster cult is this one(though probably not for most). I know there are B.O.C. fans on here.

I LOVE AL STEWART! My wife gives me so much shit for being a fan (she makes fun of his voice), but I think he is great. Year of the Cat is one of my all time favorite albums. Alan Parsons produced the LP and it really shows. Even though Time Passages is trying to replicate the success of YOTC, it too is a great album. Peter White is the guitarist who worked with Stewart at the time. He is totally underrated as a player. Fantastic musician. Thanks for posting the live Al Stewart stuff. I had never seen it before.

I'm a big BOC fan, although I've kind of lost track of their more recent work. They were the first band I ever saw live. I've seen them quite a few times; from stadiums, to theaters, to even a small local club. Shooting Shark is one of those more stylistically ethereal tunes along the lines of Nosferatu, Then Came The Last Days Of May, I Love The Night, etc. I like it! Here are some personal favorites.

Nez,

From Past, Present, and Future to Between The Wars and everything in between, there's nothing I dislike. I think Mr. Stewart is an exceptional talent. Do you have Rhymes In Rooms? That is Al and Peter White, all acoustic, and is excellent. Collector's Choice was going to reissue pretty much his entire catalog so you might want to check there if you're interested in adding to your Al Stewart collection.

One of my favorite songs of the 1970's. A classic. Redone often but never as good as the original.
I can sit in a quiet room and simply fall asleep to this song.

Good one Frank. I do hear that song from time to time on the 60s-70s-80s stations I listen to locally or via Inet stream. I like it a lot. How about this slow ballad from Stonebolt? This song definitely qualifies as "forgotten"; I can't tell you the last time I heard it over the airwaves although it did chart into the Top 40.

As for a song to fall asleep by, here is a top pick for me personally. I really love the imagery of the lyrics, it makes me wish for rain every time I hear it...

You got me on that one. For all the music I heard for years, I never heard of Stonebolt.

How about this one, I used to play this over and over again when I was in end of high school.

Another forgotten gem. I haven't heard that in a long time, it gets zero airplay anymore. I like Poco more so than the Eagles. It is amazing the "names" that come up when you think about Poco, and Buffalo Springfield from which they arose. Pretty much the start of Country Rock or whatever you want to call it - Ritchie Furay, Neil Young, Randy Meisner, Jim Messina, Timothy B. Schmidt, et al.

Earlier in this thread someone mentioned Holiday by Nazareth, a great song that I had completely forgotten about. I was never a big fan of Nazareth, mainly because I did not care for Dan McCafferty's vocals. However, I was recently on YouTube looking up some of their other stuff and came across this one that I totally forgot about and which I really like. I remember first hearing this song and thinking "That's Nazareth? Really? I like it!!". Anyway, here it is, forgotten by me but maybe not by you...

Boy Frank, just when I was about to post a question about whether this thread had run its course you post the Never Ending Story vid. I can't say I know this song, or the movie. I had to look Limahl up and find that he was in Kajagoogoo, which explains why I never heard the song, I don't think the stations I was listening to in the mid-80's played them or his solo work. I might have to add the movie to our Netflix queue.

I was digging into the archives earlier to think of a lesser known band that had hits but not necessarily in the States. Came up with this one, anyone besides me have their albums? Did you know that Heart was not the originator of this song but rather members of this band wrote it. Too bad they didn't release it themselves.

Wooh. TORONTO'S version (made big by HEART) is excellent. Wasn't sure I had heard them before until Brad put up the song that I recognize.
We are getting obscure here. That is GREAT.
Agreed on that Airwaves, good band. Good sound. Sounds like classic early 80's.

How about this one. Took me awhile to figure who sang this but I still remember this song like I used to hear it almost 30 years ago ON MTV. When MTV was a good channel.

MTV and TopGun and growing up in Miami, it was great.

Enjoy.

Good call, Canada had some decent "unknown" bands (unknown in the US of A that is), including Harlequin. Of course we've previously covered somewhat better known bands like Chilliwack, Saga, and Triumph but I can add Prism, Headpins, Max Webster, Helix, and Honeymoon Suite from my collection as lesser known acts from the Great White North. I never, or rarely, heard those others on local radio. Used to listen to CHUM 1050, "The Rock Of Toronto", late at night to get that kind of stuff...plus play-by-play of my second favorite team, The Leafs (go Flyers!).

Nice one! I remember that Russ Ballard wrote a couple of my favorite Rainbow songs - "Since You Been Gone" and "I Surrender". Maybe "I Surrender" qualifies as a forgotten song, so here it is:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=knyH0JDwlYg

And here's some of the songs Russ Ballard wrote:

"Liar", recorded by Argent, and Three Dog Night.
"Cuckoo", recorded by Bay City Rollers.
"God Gave Rock 'n' Roll to You", recorded by Argent, Petra, and Kiss.
"I Surrender", recorded by Rainbow, and At Vance.
"I Will Be There", recorded by Gogmagog.
"Into the Night", recorded by Frehley's Comet.
"Just a Dream Away", recorded by Roger Daltrey.
"Let Me Rock You", recorded by Peter Criss.
"New York Groove", recorded by Hello, and Ace Frehley.
"On the Rebound", recorded by Uriah Heep.
"Riding With the Angels", recorded by Samson, and Heretic.
"Since You Been Gone", recorded by Clout, Cherie Currie, Head East, Rainbow, Alcatrazz, Impellitteri, and Brian May.
"Some Kinda Hurricane", recorded by Peter Criss.
"Winning", recorded by Santana.
"I Know There's Something Going On", recorded by Frida.
"Can't Shake Loose", recorded by Agnetha Fältskog.
"Nothing Feels Good", recorded by Sam Roman.
"So You Win Again", recorded by Hot Chocolate.

;)When I was around 18, and started watching MTV, I saw this video and thought it was a great song. Back then, I didn't have a way of recording anything off TV. By the time I did, I never got to record this song. Last night remembered the name and found it.
For all of you, who grew up with the beginning of MTV, see if you remember this. I never forget the skaters. And the one girl in bikini and the big radio.
Enjoy
