2017 MLB Wacky Packages
« on: March 23, 2017, 04:35:42 AM »
With all the attention on the online cards, seems that the all new 2017 MLB Wacky Packages flew under the radar. Here's one I painted for the 9-card set:

And here's the complete checklist:

WP-1 Boston Clam Chowder
WP-2 Chicago Deep Dish Pizza
WP-3 Texas Alphabet Chili
WP-4 Kansas City Royals Mustard
WP-5 D'Backs Ssssssarsaparilla
WP-6 Chi-Town Kielbasa
WP-7 Reds Hot Salsa
WP-8 Mariners Tuna Steak Marinade
WP-9 MLB® Draft

Where and when did these come out? I remember painting one of these awhile back and then never heard about it again.

Just this week. They're inserted in packs of the new 2017 Topps Baseball Opening Day release. I've heard they're pretty hard to find (1:1,169 pack odds).

Very Cool ! Any original paintings to be had? I don't have any plans to start collecting MLB cards to get Wacky's so we will see if the MLB fans  will offer them up on the secondary markets.

Neil, wonderful painting and gag!  It's kinda cool that MLB Wackys warranted a second set, even if it's a mini sub-set as part of a Topps MLB release.  Also this is the third bit of Wacky goodness so far in this Anniversary year!

Yay! I love baseball and I love Wackys, so I appreciate these cards. And, my beloved Reds made the list. I'm officially on the lookout   :great:

Available now as 5x7 sets online, in full color or gold versions. Limited numbered sets

Thanks for the link, Patrick.  This beats searching them out individually on eBay and paying $12 a pop.

Thanks Patrick,

I have them in my cart, but now the Topps site seems to be on the blink again.  Apparently, I have a '502 bad gateway'. I didn't know my gateway was bad. I should have it looked at  :P

I still want the regular sized cards though...    :-\

I was on the fence on this one but just order a regular set. While they call these Wackys, they are just logos on some made up product which makes it hard to make fun of it. MLB does not want logos altered in any way

Thanks for posting this info. Got one regular set. The gold did nothing for me as you can't see the art the way it was painted. Gold Borders might have lured me in. I am confident 70 percent of the gold sets will end up on ebay anyway.  Glad to get in a wacky set limited to 49 sets at the original price even though I am not a baseball guy. The odds on the regular sized cards remind me of the altered art / mixed up set from chrome. They will fetch big dollars on the bay. Now I have a set; just not standard size. The works for me.

Thanks for posting the link. I couldn't find them without it!! Just bought one regular set. A complete MLB promo set of standard sized cards last year was very cheap, and those were also randomly inserted into baseball packs. The odds must have increased dramatically this time. Does this mean we are getting another full set this year?

The odds may be listed high, but that doesn't seem to mean much here. eBay BINs are in the 15-30 ranges. Auctions selling for less.

Both sets still available.  Even the gold at 10 sets made. Go figure. Not a "Home Run"

Maybe no one can find them? Without Patrick posting the links, I'm not sure I would have found them. I was actively searching the Topps site, with no luck, when the links were posted here.

exactly. it was luck that I even found those 5x7s. You can't search worth crap on that site either.

and poking around some more this morning, I see there are also #'d 10x14 posters for all 9 that are selling individually.
full color # to 99 @ $25
and 'gold' sepia tone that are all 1 of 1s @ $100

I am not sure why the link in my bookmark failed - but here is me re-posting the Landing Page for Topps Wacky Packages:

https://www.topps.com/shop-entertainment-brands/wacky-packages.html

I am still confused why Topps is hiding WP stuff from us and not adding these items across multiple pages on their site....

WAIT FOR IT!...............

There will probably NOT be a binder for the 50Th Anniversary..........  :-X  >(

Even more frustrating is the fact that when you check out, say, the poster of Chicago Deep Dish Pizza, and then use the back arrow to return to the image you originally clicked on, it has mysteriously disappeared and you find that every single card - all 714 of them - have rearranged themselves on different pages (kind of like an online version of a Stephen King shape-shifting haunted house or hotel.)

On another note, I don't know who painted the artwork for Kansas City Royals Mustard, but I must give them due credit. The jar of mustard looks uncannily realistic - like an actual honest-to-goodness jar of mustard.  I know I'm talking about, of all offbeat things, mustard, but this is probably the best painting of mustard I have ever seen.  Since I was a kid, I have always been very appreciative of good artwork in WP, and this artwork is very well done!

(I'd pull the title into this post, but can't seem to manage to do so.)

Just curious....is it possible that the mustard jar is a photo with the rest of the art overlaid? Just doesn't look like a painting somehow...but if it is, it's very good!

Thanks for the artwork and tip, Patrick.

I considered the same thing, too, Paul Maul.  But, no, if you're able to magnify it, especially around the edges of the jar - or even the little brown specks, you can see where the individual shades of paint have been carefully blended into one another.  I'm amazed that an artist can squeeze "solid" colors out of a tube and then produce something like this.

Please, I mean no disrespect to the collectors of sketches, but paintings such as this is one of the primary reasons why I appreciate and lean toward the fully rendered artwork.  Again, to whatever artist painted this, well done!

I painted the Royals jar. Unfortunately we were not allowed to paint the logos/writing/mascot, so they were done digitally. It makes it hard to sell the original art. Thanks though!

Mark, terrific job!  You should do an acetate overlay with the digital elements so the artwork will display nicely.

Thanks Joe! I thought of that, but haven't found a good option that can be printed on. I bought some overlay sheets, but the ink didn't take. Any recommendations?

Mark, I know Kinkos does acetate prints so that would be a good place to start.  I haven't had it done so not sure of the quality but I suspect it would be fine for your application.
