yes, I quoted David Saunders recent email to me.  I always found it interesting how misinformation flows through this hobby.  "Norm did all of the diecuts" really is completely wrong as it suggests Norm did 100% of all of paintings. In fact, he didn't do 100% of ANY of the paintings and he did 0% of Boredoms according to David.

Well, if misinformation is flowing, it could be because of quotes like this from David's site:

"1967 Wacky Packages ("Die-Cut" series) 44 cards (plus 12 alternates) (Die-Cut images with moisture-activated adhesive backs) [All cards were painted by Norman Saunders.]"

You're absolutely correct! Some of the names are now forgotten, but there were several other contributors to the final art, including Mae Jeon, an amazing water color and airbrush artist that did many of the product renderings. Topps also had an in-house art department that did lettering and other small details.

I think we tend to forget some of the others because Norm's characters were so dynamic (and hilarious) that they became the focus of most of the attention.

Being the owner of the original art to Hurts, of course I love it!  Isn't it ironic that I was going to be the one to "sell out" my art and I only collected the art to flip it yet every one of those folks endedup being the sellouts and have sold all of their art?  I still own Hurts and several other pieces.  I have gotten a few really generous offers for Hurts but the timing was never right.  Some day someone will catch me right and I will sell it but for now, it is easy to say that not all the "A" pieces are in one art collection(Eric's).  There are several wacky art collections that have quite a few pieces but just no "A" pieces so maybe Hurts will one day go there.

Hurts is a fantastic Wacky.  How has the original painting held up over the years?

I prefer the Garbage gag.  Gurgle never quite made sense to me, but I always liked the funny baby on the label.

Better than when it was first discovered. David Saunders meticulously removed some of the brown gunk that had attached itself to the upper part of the art and since he has his dads actual paint, he touched up the spots it left, it looks fantastic.

I will drop him a note and mention this.  I know this topic came up years ago, we all chatted with David and we all can see with our discerning eyes that clearly the art improved after the die-cut series and I know David has confirmed this trend more than once for us.  Much like a lot of our other discoveries that we have forgotten about, no harm in digging this up and discussing again.

As you stated, series 2 versus wacky ads really shows Norm taking over a much higher % of the work per piece.  Its one of the reasons I wouldn't trade my Hurts for a Series 1 piece and why I went after Hurts more than Fink in Dan's auction.  You should see the Frankenstein art that Norm did in the 1960's.  100% Norm, the detail blows away all wackys.  Best art pickup I ever for me was that Frankenstein art

Not sure, I saw band-ache art in person and it was more white and washed out than I had expected.  Because it is such an inconic piece and my favorite, of course I would really have to but from an artistic and condition of art point of view, band-ache has no iconic Saunders character. Not the no brainer trade you would expect.

This one never did anything for me.  Bland art, no character, and a weak gag.  This is one where I prefer the Wacky Ad instead of the Series 2 sticker - at least the extra stuff on the Ad includes characters.

Just looking at the art, it obviously improved from series 1 onward, I am fairly certain I called out glaring examples of this on other threads.  I just don't care enough to try to find the posts. Some middle series pieces are subpar, I suspect these other artists still had a hand in the art along the way.  Series 16 has some of the best detail in the run!    Hey, if you ever want to sell a piece of Frankenstein art, let me know.

Gosh, so much to catch up.  Will just comment on Gurgle, Bleech and Hurts.

Gurgle: boring but I do like more than Garbage for nostalgic reasons, never saw wacky ads as a kid
Bleech: ugh
Hurts: love it, notice the tilt in the Hurts guy is different from wacky ad to 2nd series, maybe that is why the foot disappears.

Another meh title for me. In case someone wonders... nertz is defined as:  nonsense, nuts —often used interjectionally.  Anyone remember the "two, two. two mints in one" ad campaign shown below?

Has there ever been any documentation on why the added the 'e' to poopsi?  They also deleted the underline to the word are, but that is not a big deal.   I always likes this one, very simple but the detail on the bottle is outstanding.  Plus I guess the familiarity with the products helps.
