Wacky Packages OS Box Pricing
« on: June 10, 2010, 09:07:32 AM »
I don't think I have ever seen a market value price sheet for full OS boxes. Does anyone have one? I never collected full boxes because I was never sure of the value. I see there is a series 9 box on ebay now that I wouldn't mind owning but I am not sure if his price is too high.

I stopped collecting full boxes several years ago, so I don't really have my finger on the pulse of the current market, if in fact there is one. Most of the time, it seems like people put these on ebay at outlandish buy-it-nows and they never sell.
Here is my perception of prices in the middle part of the decade when I was active with them:

1st series: non-existent
2nd, 3rd, 4th: all very hard to find, generally command $2000-3000 unless in terrible shape
5th: tougher than 6th and up, but not as tough as earliest series, around $1250-1500
6th, 7th: more common, around $600-750, possible less for the 7th gumless which is common
8th: tougher to find than you would think for some reason, I never had one, still probably under $1000
9th and 10th: pretty common, there was a seller at the Philly show years ago who had several of each, I paid only
$250 apiece for one of each, should sell for around $500 in my opinion
11th: non-existent
12th: lots of packs around, not as many full boxes, around $1000-$1200
13th: tougher, never owned one, probably similar to 12th in price
14th: one of the most common, $400-ish
15th: not terribly rare, but the 15th set has value, so still around $1000-1200
16th: obviously very volatile due to set volatility, couldn't venture a guess

Again, likely that any of these would sell for less now due to general depression of the market. All of the above are for the most common color variation, 8th blue or 5th yellow would go for more.

Thanks for the rundown. I don't think I have seen a series 9 box on ebay before but I probably wasn't paying attention so I thought they might be harder to find. I don't have any original boxes so it might be fun to hunt down one. Thanks again!

If I could get a box of series 7 relatively cheap I would get one and invite my best friend over (Same friend I collected with as a child) for some old-time pack cracking!  I sometimes wonder if opening packs back to back of the same series would cause that deja vu feeling.

Dave,

I think most of these prices are pretty close to reality.  Series 10 boxes are usually right on par with series 14, and series 9 is a bit more expensive.  As for series 16, I think somewhere between $4500-$5000 is about right.  that guy that has his on ebay for $7200 is dreaming!
Still looking for Series 17

Maybe we should expand on this a bit. Can you help out with the following?
Series 1 Reissue:
Series 2 Reissue:
Series 3 Reissue:
Series 4 Reissue:
1985
1985 OPC
1987 OPC
1988 OPC
1989 OPC

I have a 1985 OPC full box but I don't know what it's worth or what I paid for it. I know there aren't many of them because they never show up on ebay. You never see the packs either. I bought a pack from Greg for about $40 a year or so ago.

Your not kidding when you say bargains. Those are some great prices! I don't think that really shows market value because I think you bought all way under market. Good Job!

Ron, you did real well on the OPC boxes. I think a 1987 just went for $350 best offer. I think it's still on the completed list because I saw it yesterday. Even the 88 and 89 OPC usually fetch $150-200.

Having bought dozens of re-issue boxes and tracked every box auction over the last three years this would be my assessment assuming they are excellent+ to NM:
Series 1 Reissue (both versions): $100-140
Series 2 Reissue: $180-200
Series 3 Reissue: $90-120
Series 4 Reissue: $160-180
1985: $150-200
1985 OPC: $500-600
1987 OPC: $275-300 (Not sure about this one. I just got a near mint box for $350 but it's one of only two I've ever seen on ebay in three years.
1988 OPC: $100-120
1989 OPC: $100-120
Album box: $50-100
OPC album box: $????
Some believe that the re-issue series 2 box is hardest to come by. Judging by what I've been able to find over the years and what's in my stash the hardest box to find is series 4. I'm open to tweaking this chart. Maybe we can compile one complete list of box prices and update it every so often.

The 1985 OPC price you quote is waaaaay low. $75-100 sounds reasonable for about 5 packs.

Honestly, 1982 and 1985 OPC are pretty hard to find. There may be only about 4 people who care, but I wouldn't sell either unopened pack for less than $25.

Whoops! You're right. For a second I was thinking empty box. A full 1985 should be more like $500-600 these days. That's about what I paid twice last year.

Since we're talking about OPC stuff here's a another note. The OPC re-issue boxes are super rare. I paid $1200 for all three empty OPC re-issue boxes in NM+ condition. I think if they are full they're worth about $1200 a piece.

I know nothing about the 1982 OPC box except what you've stated.

Now that I think about it there was 1 pack missing, but I had a few from that series and tossed 1 in the box. I know it really was a great deal because it was in fantastic shape, it was only a few months back!

There was one on ebay last week (reissue #4) BIN for $149...I put it on watch it lasted about 18 hours.

Yes, the OPC re-issues are very tough. The only party I know of who actually had full boxes was Canadian seller "hockeyauctions", and Greg may have obtained some from him. The short print packs in those boxes (there are only two ad variations, one twice as prevalent as the other) are extremely hard to find. They go anywhere from $75-150 per pack depending on the series.

Of course, the rarest OPC items are the original series 1-3 unopened packs. Series 1 and 3 have never even been found to my knowledge, and for series 2 there are only a few (unfortunately, none are mine  :()

I bought a sheet from that hockeyauctions seller recently, and he gave me prices on some of his full boxes and they seemed very high to me, like $2,000.00+.

I'm surprised to hear that.  What has changed to make Reissue 4 tougher than Reissue 2?

I'll insert my opinions into the quote in asterisks:

Wacky Box price guide - Full and empty
This list still has a lot of holes and may be missing a few boxes including some tough color variations.
________________

1st series: full non-existent / empty-$?
** High grade empty 1st series box: $800 - 1000 **
2nd, 3rd, 4th: all very hard to find. Full $2000-3000 / Empty $900
**I think these are a bit high, I'd say 2nd: $600, 3rd and 4th, $400-500
5th: tougher than later boxes, not as tough as earlier boxes. Full $1250-1500 / Empty $600-700
**I think empty 5th blue, only about $300**
6th, 7th: more common. Full $600-750 / Empty $?
**Minor dependence on titles/no titles, about $100-150**
7th gumless is common - Full $400-500 / Empty $75-100
8th: a little tougher. Full $900-1000 / Empty $300
9th and 10th: pretty common. Full $400-500 / Empty $100-150
11th: Full non-existent / Empty $500
**Everything since my last comment seems very accurate**
12th: lots of packs around, not many full boxes $1000-$1200 / Empty $?
**Empty high grade 12th, $300-400**
13th: tougher than 12th Full $100-1200 / Empty $300
14th: one of the most common. Full $400-500 / Empty $140
15th: not too rare, but the 15th set has value. Full $1000-1200 / $150
**Empty 15th probably more like $300. The gallery seems to think boxes of the same color should have roughly equal value, but I think the 11th is clearly rarer than the 15th and so should be more valuable**
16th: very volatile. Full maybe $3000-5000 / Empty $75

**deleting post original series stuff because I have no knowledge**

Wacky Ads 5¢: Full $? / Empty $
Wacky Ads: 10¢: Full $? / Empty $?

**I don't think any full ads boxes remain. Empties are expensive, very rarely offered for sale. Ballpark: 10-cent box $1000-1200, 5-cent box $2000+**

There's a Wacky patches box on ebay with 19$ pricing factory stickers. Is that common? This is funny too because the seller calls the box mint when it looks like he backed over it with his car.

No that is the (uncommon) one, most of them have a "39" cent price tag. ;)

It's odd, because the text on the bottom of the box to "Mr. Retailer" mentions the 39 cent price.

I'm surprised to hear that.  What has changed to make Reissue 4 tougher than Reissue 2?

Upon further review, I got my series colors mixed up.  I am only a part time player with the reissues!  The series 2 pakcs (yellow) are harder to come by in the purple box, as opposed to the series 4 green packs in the green box.  Don't know why I got those mixed up in my head.
Still looking for Series 17

I think even the 19 cent boxes were really just 39 cent boxes with the 19 cent sticker placed over the 39. I don't believe there is such a thing as a box with 19 cents printed directly on it.

I suspected that's what you meant. Still, the green box is hardest to come by, thought the packs might not be.

Correct.  There used to be a debate as to whether the retailers put the 19 cent sticker on or whether Topps sent the boxes out with the 19 cent sticker.  I ended that debate when I obtained the shipping case for 19 cent sticker boxes and the boxes had the 19 cent sticker and the shipping case itself has a 19 cent sticker on it.

Just want to add that some of the numbers I gave for full boxes in this thread are low, no original series full box is worth less than $750 at this point, I don't think. A 14th just sold for $995.
