Who Closed Out the Patches Auction???
« on: May 26, 2010, 08:05:22 AM »
I guess it was never even discussed here, but the auction for 28 test patches wrapped in individual cello packs:

http://cgi.ebay.com/1974-Topps-WACKY-PATCHES-Lot-27-Unopened-MINT-/180511658145?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a075550a1

was ended. I don't remember ever even knowing about these, although Rusty has them described on his patches page. If anyone knows who now owns them please PM me as I would like to acquire one.

Can anyone remind me if these were ever discussed before?

Same here. I'd also be interested in purchasing 1 of these packs if anyone knows who won them.
Thanks

So the guy running the auction closed it out and is posting them individually now?

Dave - I believe these have been discussed in the past but quite awhile ago. I have a number of these (I think I'm missing one). They are pictured and described in The Gallery.

I've never been a patch collector, so I remember vaguely discussions about prototypes, but the whole cello packaging
thing didn't ring a bell. I just looked in the Gallery, and you're right, the cello packaging is mentioned on Page 118.
I guess I missed it because it wasn't in the body of the text on patches, but in a special "prototype" section.
There is a picture of the prototype patches themselves, but not of the packaging.

My interest in these stems from considering them an "unopened pack."  I'm a little put off by the fact that the cello is sealed with only a piece of scotch tape, but since they're clearly legit it doesn't really bother me.

Do people consider this to be an "unopened pack"?  I think I do because of the backer card having wacky specific markings. It seems like just as much an unopened pack as a Shedd's cello, except that it's not really sealed.

One would think there would be some correlation between an unopened pack collection and a wrapper collection.  I can see that there would be some cases of the same wrapper covering multiple packs hence the correlation wouldn't be 1 to 1 but would there be cases where one has an unopend pack that correlates to no wrapper ie does anyone have a torn plastic cello in their wrapper collection for Shedds, for cello funpacks and for Patches?  I am going to guess no hence cello packs and packs whose wrapper doesn't have a code that and wording that speaks to the contents being part of a set are stretches to be part of unopened pack collections.  I can understand the need to include them to make unopened pack collecting more exciting and exotic but it seems to open the door to the definition of unopened packs being quite nebulous, kinda like the trainwreck of "lost wacky" sets which really have no clear definition.

I get what you're saying, but requiring an unopened pack to have a collectible wrapper seems a bit overly stringent to me. I think most would consider the 1982 cereal pack to be an unopened pack, even though it's a nothing wrapper.
Same for the Shedd's pack.

In sports cards, the older cello packs often had no markings at all on the wrapper. I agree this "patch pack" is a bit iffy, but it couldn't hurt to have one.

I have some with the wax paper backing but not the cello. I believe Andrew Relkin has some in the cello.

I would not consider them an unopened pack in the way you are thinking pack. They are in packaging but when I think pack I think multiples of cards or stickers. If we go by just being in packaging then even the swim rings or the iron-ons in the package would be called unopened packs.

There were 1-cent baseball card packs containing only one card produced until 1965. I don't think multiple cards should be a requirement. It is very hard to define though. Here are some "packs" that are iffy for different reasons:

poster packs: contents make it iffy, but wax wrapper similar to regular packs is pretty compelling

tattoo packs: (for obvious reason)

Shedd's pack: one sticker, not directly retailed

To me, what these patch packs have going in their favor is that the patch is of a similar appearance/size to a
regular wacky, so that the appearance of the pack makes it "seem" like a pack. They also likely would have been retailed in a multi-pack box like regular packs. Something like the inflatables or other packaged items don't have
these things going for them. Of course it's all subjective.

Aside from the wrapper analysis, another thing to consider to qualify something as a pack is whether the "pack" is distributed with other packs ie in a box.  I wouldn't consider Shedds, cereal sticker, patches or any of these other "one-off" products that happened to be wrapped as packs.  Tats are interesting as the wrapper is the desired item and the gum was the product but it was distributed in a box of packs so I would say tats are the greyest, all of the other "packs" are very black and white to me in their classification.
