These look like excellent sale prices. Robert Edwards must be a good site for this material.

When I saw the die cut set in the catalog, I was kinda hoping maybe it would float under the radar in a mostly sports auction. No such luck.

Those are really interesting prices. I would have never thought an auction house like these would get that much exposure. You think ebay has the market on this stuff.

I was just reading a completed auction on this site (referenced above):

http://bid.robertedwardauctions.com/bidplace.aspx?itemid=14751#pic

In reading it, they mention 5 diecut number variations not listed on the wackypackages.org site. They also say the auction doesn't include them, so there is no proof in this auction that they exist. Is the 56 card list short by 5 cards, or is this auction text wrong? The five titles they mention are:

1. 3b Jolly Mean Giant
2. 32c Chock Full o' Nuts and Bolts
3. 34b Paul Maul
4. 41b Spray Nit
5. 43c Breadcrust Corned Beef Hash

Saunders Mars Attack Art looks like one piece was a steal as history has been those pieces always get $20k and up.  Is it a fact that Norm did ALL of the Mars Attacks titles?  The one that sold for only $11k here looks weak and may explain the lower price.

Norm did not do all of the Mars attacks. 2 or 3 were by Bob Powell, Several were by M. Blumenfeld, Several non-Saunders were touched up by Saunders to make them look more like his.
Looking for Saunders Art cards: Especially Wackies, Frankenstein stickers, Mars Attacks & Battle

Bob Powel did much of the black and white art in the old SHADOW pulp magazines in the '40s. He did stuff for comic books in the '50s.  In '62 he illustrated the stuff I wrote for SICK magazine.  I know he did lots of the line roughs for Mars Attacks....But which ones did he paint?  I don't think I ever saw any of his paintings.

I know he did #51 - Crushing the Martians, and #25 - Capturing a Martian. There may be a 3rd, but I can't remember & would have to pour through back issues of the Wrapper to find out for sure.

These are just miscuts that were included in the Benjamin Guide, as variations, in the early days of the hobby. Later to be joined by the infamous #4 Ratz.  The number of an adjoining card back would appear with the wrong image.  Even if only one sheet were like this, there are potentially many other titles with similar issues, plus some with no number and others with multiple numbers (if they survived).  I have one or two of them (from the above list) that I picked up in the mid 90's.  Maybe I should dig them out and e-bay them (better yet, put them up with Robert Edwards . . .)

What's with the "b" and "c" designations?
Giving "The Hobby" the finger since 1999!

That's just the standard nomenclature used with number variation diecuts. So, for example, Ratz would be 32a
and Weakies would be 32b.

For card number 21, you'd have 21a Moron Salt, 21b Jolly Mean and 21c Maddie Boy, etc.

So this auction detail is loaded with misinformation stating this is a Saunders painting?

Yes, absolutely, as scary as that is. I brought that up on the CGC boards too when talk started about that piece. Even without David Saunders' word on who did that, if you look at the proportions of the aliens, you can see they are weird, and not Saunders at all. Look at the giant head midget looking ones on the ground, the overly broccoli shaped head in the front, and the way too short arms.  Saunders was ridiculously consistent, and would never paint the martians like that.

Thanks Ed. That makes perfect sense. I had a Vicejoy I just sold recently with the wrong number on the back. I don't remember which number it was, but it was a miscut. Do you know of anyone collecting these? I've never heard these miscuts referenced as legit "variations", and my vice joy didn't raise any eyebrows.

I just went back and read the article by David Saunders in The Wrapper #247, that card was painted by Powell, but touched up by Saunders to "Bring it up to his level". Saunders hand was in it (WHich does seem obvious in the explosions now that I look closer), but it's mainly a Powell piece.

I didn't see Powell's name mentioned in the art auction description yet I see it harping on Saunders being "the artist" hence the auction was misleading and basically wrong.

Yes, a very misleading auction description, and probably grounds for not having to follow through with the purchase.

and now you can get giant wall sized versions from LTL of every card!
I just went to the site looking for something else and noticed the Mars Attacks card on the first page.
