My first PSA Submission
« on: January 18, 2013, 11:42:38 AM »
I joined PSA recently, and you get 15 free gradings with a 7-day turnaround when you join. So I submitted 15 die cuts I thought had a very good chance of grading PSA 8 NM-MT or higher. I thought it would be interesting to post the results. There is insight here into how PSA grades.

Die-Cut #4: Camals  -- PSA 8

Die Cut #9: Paul Maul  -- N8: Miscut

This card came back as N8: Miscut. I had already filled out the submission form and was in the process of packing everything when I noticed it had a popped perf, so I expected trouble, and sure enough.

Die Cut #12: Crust  -- PSA  8

What other grades did you get? Any surprises either way?

Die-Cut #13: Kook-Aid -- PSA 6

This is where it gets interesting. I requested no qualifiers on the whole submission. So if the centering is not adequate, a lower grade will be given. The corners on this are as nice as any of the others. The centering to me appears to be between 65/35 and 70/30, which I thought was marginally OK for an 8. It should certainly be OK for a 7. But now I think they may just deduct two grades in lieu of the qualifier, which makes no sense. I can't imagine why this should be a 6.

Edit: From PSA grading standards: "NM-MT 8: Near Mint-Mint...Centering must be approximately 65/35 to 70/30 or better on the front and 90/10 or better on the reverse."

I'm gonna post them all, it'll just take a little while. There were a few surprises both positive and negative.

Die-Cut #17: Weakies -- PSA 7

This one annoyed me the most from the group. I was sure it would get an 8. I can't tell you how many PSA 8's I see on ebay that are diamond cut, toned, ugly in every way. This is a beauty and perfectly centered. I now think the problem is that three corners have touches, all very minor. I think they won't allow more than two corners with any wear in an 8. This must be the most beautiful 7 ever graded.

Die-Cut #20: Gadzooka -- PSA 6

This was actually already graded a PSA 8. I cracked it out years ago because the case was all scratched up. Wasn't expecting a 6, however I do see that there is a small chip out of the left edge I didn't notice, so I won't quibble with this one. I do think the PSA grading standards have tightened up a lot over the years.
