Advice first-time buyer of original series set
« on: January 27, 2012, 06:14:40 PM »
I'm looking to buy my first original series set.  I'm starting with series 6 since I remember that set from when I was a kid.

Looking on ebay I see several sets for sale but some of the stickers are discolored.  Is that common?

Anything I should look out for when buying a full set?  I guess I am looking for advice from you wiser veterans.

I saw something weird here:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1974-Topps-Wacky-Packages-6th-Series-6-Virgina-Slums-PSA-9-MINT-/380374674443?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item589018ec0b

It says it is PSA9 but to me it looks discolored...how can that be mint?

Here are some of the sellers offering full sets...anyone that I should be careful of?

The border beiging is quite common in the middle series sets.  I have found that even stickers I bought long ago that seemed pretty white have beiged a bit.  You might have to decide if you prefer minty corners or pure white borders.  I have just about every set available.  I could do $40 shipped for a series 6 set in Ex+/Nm with some beiging.

Ok thanks I didn't know that.

Is the beiging due to some reaction between the adhesive underneath the paper and the paper stock itself?

I see a lot on ebay that are still white and some that are beiging.  Wonder what causes it?

I know the mid series have beiging but if you hold out you may find a nice set. I did and it's almost perfect. I did buy a set and then pick cards to enhance my set. It's tough to buy a perfect series set because they may be beiged but also if you have a prestine series 6 it might not pull in big dollars. It sucks as a seller so why bother. This also hurts the uneducated buyer because they think all mid series should be cheap. It's a slippery slope with mid series.
I,personally, think if you find a solid mid series for a higher price you are getting what you paid for. I think those sets should sell close to $100 but the masses are trained not to pay much so as a seller why bother.

paying a higher price means you got a better set?  Um no, we have all learned that very often price and quality have nothing to do with each other given there are many unscrupulous sellers out there.
