1979 Wacky Poster (mail away?)
« on: January 21, 2012, 02:52:42 PM »
Hi,

I recently bought a poster at a local antique shop that had the whole first set (1-66) of 1979 wacky packages on it.  From my research (I couldn't find much), I think it was a poster that was given away if you mailed in 3 wax wrappers and $2 back in the day.  Does anyone have any information about this poster, its rarity, value, etc.

Thanks!

*The poster is in really good shape, not folds, etc.

I think those are tough to find. I haven't seen one on ebay in quite awhile.

These are not rare.  As a matter of fact, they are the most common sheet, and very common as a wacky item.  See below link.  I hope this helps...

Sorry my friend, but this is clearly not that sheet.  Just count the cards on each sheet.  The one that I bought is a POSTER, not STICKERS.  There are 66 cards on mine, not 123, as the one you referred me to.

there are literally thousands of those "half" sheets out there.  they were cut in half and sold that way.  I saw them at shows for as low as $5 each.  Now, if  your's truely is not a sheet (sticker format) but only paper,  then you may have something there.  From the look of it however, it is a sticker sheet cut in half....

I can assure you that the thing that I bought is a poster, not some sort of sticker sheet.  It is exactly the same item as the poster that I referred to in the last post.  I just have no idea of how rare (if at all) and valuable it is.

I had forgotten that there was a 1979 poster. This looks like what you have there. I honestly don't recall seeing one, so it could be quite rare. Anyone else know?

the reason I say it looks like a half sticker sheet, is because of the glossy look as well as the bottom of it looking like it's been cut.   Can you show a reverse side of it??  Does it have checklists and Gadzooka on the back?

It is pure white on the back (like a normal poster).

I bought one of those posters about 5 years ago.  Not sure what I paid for it, but I'm thinking it might have been around a hundred bucks.

I want to sell it, but I don't want to ask too much or too little.  It was rolled up when I bought it, but not tightly.  It has no folds or creases, but is not in PERFECT condition.  I appreciate everyone's input, as I try to discover more about its value.

You do have yourself a find there.  I didn't think the poster had a glossy finish to it...  BTW, I have seen so many collectors get duped into thinking they found something rare, when in fact it was one of the '79 swill sheets mentioned above.  That is where my scepticism came from.  As with anything, it's worth what someone is willing to  pay for it.  In this economy, that's a tough call.  Why not stick a cheap frame around it and keep it?  If you need to sell it, and paid less than $100 for it, why not start the bidding at $99 and let the market decide?  If you do sell it, I would guess it could fetch $200 or more in Ebay.  Of course that's just a guess.

Again, thanks for all of your input.  I am a "top seller" on EBAY, but besides my extra Wackys, don't sell WP stuff (I just buy it).  I'm a fledgling WP collector, who really wanted to relive that childhood excitement of these stickers (I have very fond memories of the 1982 set with the album).  I have no sentimental connection to this poster, so I'll probably try to sell it, and as you say, let the market dictate its value.

Anyhow, thanks again for trying to help me figure out its value.

It is definitely the mail away poster.  There are three versions of these, I have all three versions as well as the shipping tubes that Topps had sent these out.  They are all pretty hard to find, I would classify them as very scarce.  Demend fluctuates on these so it may come down to timing to find a buyer who will pay a lot.

I see it sold for $127, who got it? Definitely a cool reissue item. Why didn't I send in the $2.50 back then!

Ernie,
When you say there are 3 versions, do you mean there are 3 1979 versions, or you are referring to the 1973, 1974 and 1979 Topps posters (3 poster versions total)?
