Fake pack - avoid
« on: May 02, 2011, 05:42:03 PM »
I hate to keep doing this, but I can't let people get stuck with fakes like I did for seven years. This one is 100% bad.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Topps-Wacky-Packages-1975-11th-Series-Unopened-Wax-Pack-/150599958081?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item231074fe41

Please note, that doesn't mean the seller's other packs are bad, in fact the 2nd and 3rd series packs look fine as far as I can tell from a scan.

How can you tell? I'm not as up on this as you but from an untrained eye it looks fine to me. What gives it away?

The folds were re-sealed in the wrong order. For 85-fold packs, the bottom fold (without the ad text) should be superimposed over the top fold (with the ad text). Here's how an 85-fold pack should look:

It's frightening how many fake 11th greens are out there. The 9th and 12th series packs are common, so anyone with a green wrapper can whip one up.

To my dismay, but for the better good of the hobby, Dave helped me to determine and wipe out a fake Green 11th Series pack from circulation. Thanks for taking a hit for the team and helping out other unsuspecting pack collectors.

Dave has been an invaluable resource in helping me weed out fakes, confirm authenticity & plug some VERY difficult holes in my pack collection. He has been very generous with his time & expertise & in sharing his contacts. He is truly an asset to this hobby!

Thanks Bill. You've actually helped me out with a couple of packs that, while not exactly high profile, were important to me, so thanks to you too! I only wish there were more pack collectors we could both help!

I'd need to start with low-end packs, to see if I can resist opening them  :-\    So far so good on the poster pack - thanks again for that, Dave!!!

I've almost completed the basic 1-16 sets and would love to start in on unopened packs but it sure seems risky to me. I'd be certain to be ripped off...still thinking about it though.

I can't do it.  I tell sellers not to sell me the pack if they don't want it opened!

I am going to post my 12th and 11th series packs here for your review maybe you can weigh in on those...that would help me out...you being the authority...i also have 7th series packs as well...

I wanted to start collecting fake packs, but I realized I'd never know for sure if someone was selling me a real fake pack or a fake fake pack.

I would take the plunge, but just be careful about it. I'm a little low right now, but I generally have some extra packs on hand. I'm planning on replenishing the larders with a deal at the Allentown show. So I could definitely hook you up with some of the more common ones at a fair price, if that would allow you to get started without fear of being ripped off.

I'm also happy to check packs for anyone who wants, I actually enjoy it.

If you got stuck with a legitimate one you could always open it, then glue it back together yourself.

No! At that point it would become a reseal of a reseal and become a fake fake pack! It's a very complicated.

The only true fake pack is no pack at all.

I think I have a full run of fake packs; therefore, I have a full run of fake packs. Or maybe that's a fake run of full packs...Dammit! It's gone.

Yikes, there's no such thing as a 12th series pack with this wrapper.

I also like this line from the auction description:

"and giving off the impression that it might have been produced just a few days ago.."

In this case looks may not be deceiving!

Are you suggesting this is a reseal?  Seems that the seller is simply an idiot in this case as this is an 11th green, not a 12th, correct?

Why anyone is going anywhere near any of his auctions is beyond me.

Actually, yes, both the pack described here as a 12th and the one he has now listed as an 11th are both re-seals for the same reason as the one in the original post of this thread. The fact that it can't be a 12th unless it's fake is secondary.

There's no way to be sure from a scan like this, but my gut feeling is these are probably real. He doesn't seem to know what series they are. I asked him and the back is the "paste anyplace" back, so could in theory be 5th, 6th or 7th.
