old wacky collection and what to do
« on: February 16, 2011, 09:21:52 PM »
About ten years ago I got into my childhood collection from the 70s and sold off my duplicates on ebay (I recognize a number of user names on the forum as winning bidders of those auctions).  There I learned about tan backs and white backs, and that the 1st series tan and 3rd series white backs had been distributed more so in the midwest.  I grew up in St. Louis and had the good fortune of a parent who carried all kinds of trading cards in his business and brought home boxes of wackys whenever a new series came out.  (The memories come rushing back!)  And so ten years ago I had lots of duplicates of those rarer variations.  I'm now toying with the idea of selling my entire collection, which includes complete sets of series 1-16, with both white and tan backs of series 1 and 3.  I'm also thinking about having the rarer sets graded.  Bottom line - I'm really not sure what I want to do.  I've gotten more into my sports card collection the last five years, and could use the money.  On the other hand, the original wackys are just cool. For those who have been long time collectors, I'm curious what your thoughts are . . .  about card grading, where the market for these are going, etc.

Your question about grading will probably come down to the condition of the cards, and whether or not you want to got through the hassle of sending them in and then selling them one by one.  If they are in great shape it may be worth it.  You could always grade your rarer ones (like the 3rd whites and S1 tans) and keep the more common ones like the S1 whites.

It would be really astounding if anyone had first tans that were really "gradeably" high grade. Even fresh out of the pack almost all of them are severely off-center, many are under or oversized, and suffer from various other manufacturing oddities. Even so, I love 1st tans for some reason.

Sports cards are fine but Wacky's are better!
Unless they are really solid NM-MT I would not even bother grading them.
Most PSA EX-MT 6's get better money when busted out of the cases and sold as is and with the crap shoot grading that PSA does with wacky's anyway I would be very hesitant, unless you think they will get a NM7 or better.

Many S1 tans also seem to have the discoloration issues that you see with some of the S5 and S6's.

Let me know what you guys think.  BTW - the "crease" that you see on the tan back of the Band-Ache at the bottom was the sleeve (changed it out!)

The only one of these that I might take a gamble on having graded would be the Paul Maul.  The card itself looks to be very solid.  Nice centering and sharp corners.  The only big flaw that I see is the printing defect where the red line extends up across the left side of the image and a couple of small specks of dirt on the back.  Not sure what PSA would say about that defect.

The Lavirus looks like it is miscut into a diamond shape and the Tandache appears to have some surface wear and stains on the back.  The grade you get back on those probably won't increase the value any.  It's too bad about that Tandache because it has near perfect centering and sharp corners too!

I wonder what PSA will do about the black border spotting.  Is that a factory flaw or created by wax from the packs?  You might get "ST" qualifiers which would kill the PSA value.  Might be best to sell them as is.  Seems pretty clear you are going to sell your collection if you examining it this closely.

Is it just me or do the tanbacks have a strange color to them? Maybe it's the camera?

I wouldn't grade any of them. The BA has a big crease on the bottom. The spots would be the least of your worries. The Paul Maul would probably come back with the ST qualifier as mentioned but it would probably only get a 5 or 6.
I wouldn't grade them. Just keep them as is.

It was stated that the Bandache was in a creased sleeve, which has since been replaced.

He said he changed it out. Anyway, the spots on back are the real issue. If we had scans out of the holders it would be better. I'm not sure about all the BA spots on the border. Those could be from the holder as well.

She said she changed it out in the same post with the scan, so we'd all know to not consider that line that looked like a crease :-\

Funny how most of us guys on here assume that new members are male.  I guess with a name like "fredcatsmommy" it makes sense that this person is female!

Maybe they only read "fred" and stopped reading the rest of the name after that. ;)
