Title: Forum Members' Teen/Amateur Wacky Packages
Post by: bludevilok on February 06, 2023, 10:17:10 PM
Hi, all!  Some of you may know me through trading.  As a young teenager, like 13-16, I was impatient waiting for the new series to come along, so I drew my own on the side.  I found my drawings a few years ago, but with all the new Wackys coming out, I didn't think it necessary to post any of these.  Now that we don't have new Wackys every week or even every month, I thought I'd just share them with y'all to maybe satisfy any Wacky withdrawals.

What you will see were drawn around 1974-1977, so these are really "old school."  I was very prolific and wound up drawing several series' worth, about 33 per series.  I was on my 10th series when I had to quit because honors classes started to consume all my time.  Before you look at them, keep in mind a few things.  First, I didn't have the concept of drawing them big and reducing them; I just drew them and colored them in a "book" of stapled white paper.  (Thus, you may see where the previous or next page color leaked through.)  Second, some of the products you may not recognize because they were products I just found around my house, and my mom sometimes bought house brands.  Some of these products even I don't remember.  Third, remember the first ones are from when I was around 12 years old, so the artwork isn't the best.  However, IMHO, I got better and the drawings became more the size of real Wacky Packages cards as I gained experience.

Here is the first series.  I hope you get a kick out of them.  If you want me to post more, let me know....I have them!

Paul

Absolutely FANTASTIC! I'm sure every one of us wanted to do exactly that back then! I'm so glad you shared them! I'm pretty sure your Frosted Snakes actually became a card, and a handful of others could easily be made into viable submissions. Please post more of your series, as they're a hoot to look at!

Yes, I found them buried in my closet in a box.  I found them with some homemade Mad magazines, which I collaborated on with my friend in school.  Neither of us were very athletic, so we spent our lunch periods drawing satire.

Wow!  Thanks for the kind words, Joe!  I'm sure that not being inhibited by Topps' litigation lawyers had something to do with the variety of designs...ha!  As for the bright colors, yeah, I was surprised I didn't have to Photoshop enhance the scans.  I guess the colors in the markers held well.  If my 12-year-old self would have known he would be getting praise from a real Wacky Packages artist, he'd be jumping up and down!

Thanks, Roughwriter!  My 12-year-old self would also be excited getting praise from a real gag writer!  Yes, I believe Frosted Snakes did become a Wacky in the past 20 years.  Also, Choke was one, too.  I remember being surprised that Choke had not been done.  Topps had done Poopsie and Pupsi-Cola, but ignored the obvious gag on Coke/Choke.  Probably a possible litigation thing at the time.  There will probably be more that would actually became Wackys later in the ANS.

Thanks for the praise from all!  My elementary and middle school art teachers would be proud!   :-[

Some memories occurred to me as I read these.  While most of the model packaging I used from mom's cupboard, not all of it did.  For example, my parents did not smoke, but it seemed that a Wacky series could not be complete without cigarettes; my, how times have changed!  I remember browsing through magazines, looking at ads and getting ideas, and drawing from those.  Also, I remember taking a small drawing pad into grocery stores to quickly sketch and make notes on products that I had ideas for but my mom didn't buy.  I'm sure customers thought I was a weird kid, drawing pictures of products!

It seems to be the consensus that I continue posting, so I will, but it may be an every-few-days thing.  There are 9 1/2 series' worth, after all....ha!

I remember doing the same thing, but your drawing skills are better than mine.  I even tried drawing my own comic book of "The Incomparables."  Now I'm wondering what I did with all those things I drew back in the mid to late 1970s.

Nice work, thanks for posting these! I could tell you spent some time on them, and it's always fun seeing those distinctly '70's products that were never Wackified (e.g. Koogle). Looking forward to seeing more.

Paul, another fun and “funky” all new series!  Wonderful art all around and as pointed out ‘Funky Face’ and ‘Star Trash’ are classics and would have made superb Wackys back in the day but Tragic H Bomb is my personal fav in this series!  You should consider printing them up on card stock and putting together ’Paul’s Parodies’ sets for forum members.  I know I’d want one!

In addition to loving Wacky Packages (and other forms of satire), I was a BIG Star Trek fan....still am!  I was also disappointed that it never showed up in Wackys.....but I was elated when I finally saw Star Trek cards parodied in Old School and in other ANS cards.

I thought of a method to do this, but it would require a LOT of work:  copying, cutting out, re-scanning, re-sizing, etc.  Unfortunately, I don't have the time to devote to that project just yet.  In the meantime, I'm very glad all of you are enjoying them as much as I enjoyed creating them all those years ago.

I was always thrilled when a real Wacky Package would pop up with a title that I had used way back in the day, like Choke or Frosted Snakes.  If Dave can use any of these ideas, I'd be happy--well, ecstatic--to converse with him.

I'm so glad members are finding products they remember from the '70s and are enjoying the parodies of them.  (Ah, Funny Face, the alternative to Kool-Aid.)  Yes, there are a variety of products here that had/have never been parodied yet.  A couple of comments come to mind about this series.  The "T.D.&H." memo book idea came from "T.G.& Y." 5&10 stores.  They were everywhere here in Oklahoma; I don't know how far they got.  "Sonache" is obviously Sonic, which, having started in Oklahoma, was also everywhere in Oklahoma in the '70s, even before that, probably.  I don't think Sonic moved out of state until at least the '80s or later.  But I had it already in the '70s to parody....ha!

Wait, what's Iceflop spoofing?

As I recall, it was Iceflo or maybe Iceflow.  It came in a square plastic container, about a pint--maybe quart--size, and was kind of a cross between a slushie and sherbet.  I just did  a Google search and could find no evidence of one, but I really did eat some as a kid.  The "scary" flavor was actually cherry, thus the red container.  I think different flavors had different colored containers, but there weren't many flavors, maybe orange and grape in addition to the cherry.  Maybe this description will jog someone's memory, but obviously it didn't last long.

You actually anticipated quite a number of Wackys that were done after you created your designs! I am sure some of the others could be polished up and turned into future Wackys. You definitely we well tuned in to what made a good Wacky! I really enjoy looking at these, and would love to see the rest! Keep 'em coming!

Here is my Series 4.  According to notes in this new "volume" of the "books" I made, we're now into early 1975, but I was still 12 at this point.  Here are a few notes about this series.  First, I did not even know about the die-cut series at the time, thus Moron Salt entered into my brain as an uncreated Wacky title.  Second, in "Dull Monte," I do realize now that I used the wrong desert/dessert...or maybe I intended it that way since deserts are usually boring to walk through...you be the judge...ha!  Finally, as you can see, I decided to throw some books in the mix.  (Notice "Star Trash" makes another appearance, modeled from the first James Blish adaptation; yes, I was/am quite the Star Trek fan!)  I'm not sure exactly when "Gums" came out as a Wacky.  A reference I found had it listed as 1975.  If it was early 1975, it could have been my inspiration to do other books.  If it was later 1975, my Wacky-fying books could have been my young mind breaking more barriers with products, as I did with the single record earlier.  In any case, I hope you enjoy this 4th series.

Again, Topps did Pieces shortly after I drew that...within the same year.  And I, too, have all those Star Trek adaptations although we had to wait years for #12 and Mudd's Angels, finished by his widow.  Growing impatient with that as well, I wrote the final shows that needed to be adapted myself, listening carefully and writing from shows taped on cassette.  Those, too, were typed and made into a book that I made.  I even made and drew a picture for a cardboard cover.

Yeah, I kinda winced at that as I read it again before I posted, but at least it made fun of Nazis in the vein of Hogan's Heroes and didn't celebrate them.  My background is German, too, if it makes anyone feel better.  My mother's whole side of the family is German!

Thanks, Joe (and all the rest of you)!  I used the (at the time) current Southwestern Bell Telephone Book as the model for Telephoni Book.  At 12, I didn't realize that Bell had different names for different regions of the country.  As for M&N, I knew that M&M must stand for something, so I took the next letter of the alphabet to go with M and Wacky-fied it.

I'm glad all you folks are getting a kick out of these!

Wackys were really inspiring. I think half of us were huddled at home obsessively creating our own. These are so satisfying to look at and really bring me back to that age.

Thanks, ludidjc, gurgle, roughwriter and others for all your kind comments.  As I look back at these, I definitely could do the artwork better these days, but for 12 years old, it's not horrible.  It gave me practice.  Here'e my 5th series.  I was probably getting close to my 13th birthday by now, so they're still not professional level.  But you might get some nostalgia from some of the products along with some laughts.  Enjoy!

They just keep coming! You gotta be a professional illustrator today with all that practice! Ever see Alex Ross' first super hero drawings when he was a kid?

I continue to be amazed at how many of the drawings you did that anticipated Wackys produced later! And I'm very tempted to pick some of the others and polish them up for future consideration as Wackys! If you look at some of the earliest roughs for actual Original Series cards, your art is on par with what was used back then. These are a fantastic time capsule from the 70s, so please keep them coming!

Fifth series likes are Ben Goo, Murky Day, and A Hoy.

Scot, I'm glad you're finding your favorites!  It's always interesting to me to know which ones people relate to.

I saw a couple of them, one Spidey at 4 years old and a Superman when he was 7.  I don't know if I drew that well when I was that age, maybe a couple of years later...ha!  I think I was still with coloring books at that age.  No, I'm not a professional illustrator, but I still draw.  I do the artwork for the cover and write a poem for my Christmas cards each year, which people I send them to seem to enjoy, so I still exercise my creative talents.

Thanks for the kind words, Roughwriter.  Considering, though, that the original series roughs were probably done by professionals, those were probably slightly higher than this 12-year-old's par....ha!

Since so much delight is taken from the Old School series, I thought the Forum members would appreciate these amateur Wackys of products from that time period.  I know that re-reading these has brought back some memories of products that aren't around anymore, like the SSP cars I played with as a kid.

Nope. I'm not exaggerating at all! Do you have copies of either of the Wacky Packages books handy? Take a look at the introductions, which include reproductions of some early roughs like Playbug, Balding, Brandy Land, Sicrats, and View Monster. Yours are not that different at all! And if you'd learned the trick of drawing them at least twice the card size instead of to scale, I'm sure they would've been considered as is. I honestly think you have a handful that could be converted into modern Wackys. Let me know if you want me to work some up.

Of course, I have the Wacky Packages books.  So I just looked at those rough drafts, and I have to admit, the Playbug and Sicrats are pretty rough and comparable to my 12-year-old's art.  Roughwriter, if you really think some of my ideas are worthy of being worked up for a contemporary Wacky, sure, you have my blessing to work them up for a Wacky suitable for Topps.  Just remember, folks, if you see any of my ideas pop out of your order sets or, if Wackys ever make it back to the stores, your Wacky Pack, you saw the rough-rough draft here first! I will still claim bragging rights.    ;)

Enjoy!

These are fantastic!

Hey gang! I found my amateur Wacky Packages from 1979, or maybe 1980.

I know I created them in Junior High School and drew them on ruled notebook paper.

A little sloppy and not as nice as bluedevilok's. I blurred a few out because I found those offensive.

This is great! It is so much fun to see other people's spin on Wackys! I noticed a number of ideas you drew that eventually became actual Wackys. That shows you are in the right groove. I also saw several that would make great modern Wackys (as long as the products are still in production!) This thread is the most enjoyable one I've seen pop up in quite some time! I hope that everyone else is encouraged to dig out their childhood drawings to share!

Yay!  Swiski found his teen Wacky Packages!  These are really fun!  You and I were right in sync with a few of these.  The artwork on the first page is pretty darn good; I'm guessing you spent more time on those.  The Tremmorex made me laugh out loud because those cassettes really did shake sometimes...ha!  I also really liked "The Umpire Strikes Out"; using an umpire mask to parody Darth Vader was really witty.  In fact, all of your gags are clever and fun.  Furthermore, as Roughwriter pointed out, some of these were also made into actual Wackys.  Thank you for sharing these!  I really enjoyed them, and they brought many smiles to my day!  If you have any more tucked away somewhere, I'd love to see them.

I like Spider graph, Funny Comb and Planatere a lot!  I did 30 or so back in the 70s but they are long gone. Like you, I did one called Crack-her Back but mine had kids jumping on sidewalk cracks singing the old, “step on a crack…” ditty.

Okay, folks, here's my Series 6 to get you through the weekend.  Like Swiski, upon reviewing this series, though, I found a few that would be deemed inappropriate in the current social climate.  (It's amazing what was considered "okay" back in the '70s.)  They weren't horribly offensive, but probably too violent or non-PC.  In fact, one of my gags became an actual Wacky in Series 15; I just went further than Topps did.  So, I had to chop up the pages more, producing more images.  Also, you might notice that Swiski and I were on the same metaphorical page with a couple of these!  I hope you enjoy and get a laugh out of this series.

More good stuff! I see some that became Wackys, and one that became a Brand Buster. I also see one I've drawn previously. You've definitely got the right creative instincts! I also see some I may want to redo for potential future Wackys too. With future releases of Wackys so up in the air, this is the best show in town right now!

Another awesome batch! JIP peanut butter is one of my favorites from Dave Gross, and you were ahead of the curve.

Speaking of Wacky Packages predictions...when I was a kid, my favorite parodies were the cigarette parodies. When I looked at all the brands out there, I was surprised there wasn't a Bent cigarettes parody yet. Then when they made one in the 4th series, I was blown away!

As a big fan of Zotz back in 5th and 6th grades, I gotta like the Rotz parody. I also like the ones where you add a little extra to the name.  I think that shows some cleverness on your part, like PigPenzoil and Insani-Flush. Although, that last one wouldn't fly today for sure. I think the '70s was a time of conflicting free speech and expression. It seems like the print media was pretty open with publications like National Lampoon and even MAD getting away with quite a bit. On the other hand, radio and TV were still very strictly regulated. One thing I regret... we used to throw the words retard and retarded around as insults to one another and anything we thought was dumb. I wish I had been a little more PC back then.

How many series did you draw in total?

I was about 1/3 of the way through Series 10 when homework started to consume more time.  The first 4 series were done in about a year, and then I tapered off the next couple of years.  All of them were done in about a 4-year period.

Yes, the '70s were still coming out of the wild and free '60s but I think the Norman Lear comedies were making society take a closer look at its insensitivities. By the way, I bought Mad magazines all the time when I was a kid.  My mother let me buy them, but she obviously didn't know what kind of magazine it was.  She just knew that it was a comic book, probably like my Dennis the Menace and Charlie Brown books.  Reading Mad magazine on a regular basis definitely enhanced my appreciation for satire and my ability to write it.

Thanks! I wish I spent more time tightening all of those up back in the day. Both of the ones I blurred out were both related to gay jokes. One was Gay-Free mini pads and the other was Gay's potato chips. The jokes weren't hateful, but I still didn't want to offend anyone here.

I truly appreciate all the kind comments about these series!  I enjoy reading which particular ones you related to and enjoyed the most.  Now, I present Series 8 while you wait for your All-New Series 2023 to arrive in the mail.  Again, I had to chop up the images to delete a couple I think are insensitive in the current social climate.

Around this time is when Topps started the magazine subsets, so some magazines are included here.  Also, in my teenage mind, I thought if there could be a magazine subset, why not a record album subset?  So, for the first time I can remember, here are the first Wacky Packages based on LP's from the '70s (or before).  Enjoy!

Enjoy!

I particularly like Putrid Family and Old Mold.  You imagined Silly CD's before they existed!!

I sold the concepts of Coalgate and Fig Newts to Topps so they became Wackys. I wish I could go back and tell my young self!

This is GREAT! The best use of this site, in my opinion! Better than anything else, THIS brings us back to the feeling we had when we were kids! That someone finally got our sense of humor, and that we could be just as funny too! Just like with the other fans that shared their childhood drawings, these are surprisingly on target! There are three that I've seen turned into cards (MUD, Sneakers, and Rotz) and several others that could be converted into real Wackys. This thread should encourage all of us to stay Wacky!

Gurgle, these Wackys are awesome! I enjoyed all of these fun and witty gags, especially the "Tricycle" and--I may be in the minority--"Crap Stick"....ha!  "Low-C" and "Rotton Balls" also made me LOL, but I enjoyed all of them.  I see that you also could not resist Alfred E. Newman; there's seems to be a connection between appreciation for both MAD and Wacky Packages...what could it be?....maybe...parody?  Ha!  Also, congrats on selling "Coalgate" and "Fig Newts" to Topps!  Youthful dreams can come true.  Thank you for sharing them with us!

Happy Weekend!  Presenting Series 9, the last full series.  I'll post what I finished of Series 10 next week.  I only had to delete one this time for violent themes.  You may notice that Star Trek gets another treatment, this time for the toy phaser gun.  Also, without knowing about die-cuts or what was in Series 1 of the real Topps, I also came up with a Ratz Crackers.

Again, I hope you enjoy these as you await a month for the real 2023 series.

Paul, Muddle Cement and a Muddle Kit.  I am so there!  Again another killer series and you came up with Ratz on your own, too classic!  My fav is the Pestors cement for pests as that is not only a product  I used throughout my childhood but it is a classic product that is still to be Wackified.  Old School 11 maybe?

It's cool you came up with a Ratz Crackers parody! At the time, there probably wasn't a lot of knowledge out there on the rare die cut titles, let alone the die cuts themselves. At least me and my brother were never aware of them. We assumed the Series 1 stickers were the very first Wackies released.

It's interesting that I evidently came up with Rotz before I did a Ratz, just the opposite of Topps.  Yes, I put together several models around that time (mostly cars and spaceships).  As for whether Pestor's Cement becomes an Old School sticker....well, the invitation is out there.

I never saw a Wacky until the 2nd series.  Seeing a 2nd series, I concluded that there must have been a 1st series, but I never saw any of them until later.  Even then, I never knew there was a Ratz Crackers until doing an internet search on Wacky Packages in the '90s.

Roughwriter and Slamjim, I would be honored to have you work up some ideas for Topps based on my Wacky drawings!  Slamjim, since all my drawings were done in the mid-1970s, I would think some would be prime pickings for Old School.  I know a couple were actually done by Topps in the later original series run.  Some of the products I parodied might make you think, "Oh yeah, I remember that...."  I know I did when I looked back at them.  Ah, nostalgia....a prime ingredient for Old School Wackys.  Now, whether or not they're appropriate for the Old School series, only you and Topps would know the answer to that equation.  I hope you find something you can use in the future.

Forum friends, these are the last several Wacky Packages I drew as a teen, what I had completed of my 10th series.  I was likely 14, maybe 15 at the time.  Then, as i was finishing middle school and approaching high school, the homework became more abundant.  For some reason, I drew one on one page and two in the middle of another.  Maybe I had plans for those blank spaces?  I couldn't tell you.  I will tell you that the gag on the Tootsie Roll Pop is supposed to read "Lootsie Roll Plop"; I noticed it is fairly difficult to read.  (The gag name is also the reason I used green color, the color of money, I remember.)

I'm extremely gratified that I inspired other Forum members to rummage through their old drawings and post some of their own, which I personally have enjoyed immensely and laughed at, and certainly would have appreciated them had I pulled them in a real Wacky series back in the day.

I hope you all have enjoyed my run, and with Roughwriter and Slamjim looking at them, who knows?  You and I may not have seen the last of some of these.

Now, it's up to more of you to dig up and/or come up with your own ideas and post away.  I'd love to see them!     :D

So, here are my final teen Wacky Packages.....I hope you enjoy them and get some giggles.

Indeed!  That is why I always enjoy the Old School series.  Consider these an amateur Old School...except I actually did them in the '70s.  Some of these even I don't remember.  For example, the Sugarless Vile gum I remember seeing in my mom's purse, but I can't remember its real name.  Trash is obviously one of those teen celebrity magazines that proliferated back then, but not sure what the real name was....maybe Flash?  Some others throughout the series I distinctly remember, but alas, are no longer around and really bring on the nostalgia.

Again, I thank all of you for your enthusiasm for the work I did as a young teen.  Before I forget, I would like to thank Chad Scheres, to whom I sent the first page of my Wackys several months ago during a trade.  He said the Forum members would enjoy seeing them.  With that encouragement, I waited for a good time to start posting.  And then, with additional encouragement from Joe and roughwriter and so many more, I continued to post.  Most of all, I'm glad I provided some enjoyment to the Forum members, just as the Topps pros have provided me for the past 5 decades!

Now, all you closet artists and gag writers out there, let's see some more Wackiness posted here!  We've had three people contribute to this thread so far, so don't be shy and let's see what you've got!

Trash is a spoof of the children’s mag Smash. It was a Dynamite magazine wannabe that was only around for a couple years.

I'm going to wait for the excitement to die down a little with the postcards and 2023 set. People will be discussing that and these other threads will get ignored.

I don't have my ideas completely panned out yet, but it's something similar to Old School that might be cool.
