Title: Parody In The News!
Post by: roughwriter on December 14, 2021, 08:29:39 AM
Jay would so love this! I just read an article by Taylor Lorenz from the New York Times. It talks about the "Birds Aren't Real" Movement, which turns out to be a mockery of Q Anon and other conspiracy theory groups. These kids satirize the goofiness of these outfits by applying their mad logic and techniques to a totally absurd premise. It makes me happy to see the comedy chops that Wackys has applied to advertising is now being unleashed on the tinfoil hat true believers. Now, how can we put that on a card?!

Topps had something similar a few years ago with its "Trumpocracy" set that included "Alternate Facts"
and a few other smaller subsets.  Those were fun to help create, it took shots at both parties,
Hillary and Trump included, and anytime there was a funny tidbit in the news that could be related
or converted to a product, that got lampooned as well.

I could have a field-day all this past year thinking of concepts for those.... :)

I'm surprised with Topps losing MLB that they haven't put out a parody set about Biden and Harris.  Maybe it's just too easy for the real news (when you can find it from the liberal press) to make fun of them that parodies aren't needed.

I have tried submitting politically flavored roughs in the recent past, but was told that it is a "No Go Zone" currently. I'm not sure if the last set caused problems behind the scenes, but its something they won't touch with a 10 foot pole now!

Well after the crazy shit that was the previous guy, it's hard to top.

Given the GPK BTS controversy earlier this year resulting in the card being pulled, the likelihood of Topps allowing anything that anyone could find remotely offensive is likely just about zero.

Who would be the target audience for these? I didn't find even the baseball or movie sets funny. Just stick with basic wacky philosophy of parodying common products, that way all ages can find something to appreciate.

Its funny the way a thread can wander away from its point of origin. I only added the crack about "putting it on a card" at the end to be comical. What I thought was newsworthy was the fact that an entire group of young people were willing to mount a long term and expensive campaign simply for the purpose of satirizing something they found objectionable. They bought billboards, painted vans, spent hours writing blogs, and even gathered in large groups multiple times to stage mock protests, all for the sake of a very elaborate joke!
