Those are nice, thanks for sharing! I was expecting the sketches to be of Wonky titles, but I guess not.

So, to have a prayer at achieving a full set, you need to buy 4 packs (to possibly get a sketch [1:4] and all four 4 panel cards)?
-
Just some of what I did. (https://i.postimg.cc/F1kV10w1/wonkyscan3.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/F1kV10w1)

That was my understanding as well.

Here's a few of my sketch cards from the new set (b&w and color):

Amazing looking sketches Neil! Hope this set does well and more can be made! Hope to see another Attacky set soon! Maybe even having it in this format would be fun!
-
Now, that's some food for thought! Thanks!
Glad you like the sketch cards!!!

That's my take on it. At least there will be trading here!
-
Yep, I believe that's correct.
-
Are these more akin to cards, like the original, die-cut Wacky Ads, or stickers?
-
I'm guessing that the sketch will replace one of the 4-panel cards, so it would take five to get them all, but the collation will probably give you duplicates. So it looks like once again there will be a boatload of base sets floating around in case anyone misses the online sale.

Geez, I didn't consider that the sketch would replace a combo. Crap.
-

They're printed on card stock like the originals and include the perfs.

Sounds great. I'm surprised that Topps didn't have short perfs and long perfs.
-
This is quite the surprise! :great:

with the Monthly sets and the last Attacky Packages set, the sketch was in addition to the cards in the pack, and did not replace a card.
but then, in earlier Attacks sets, the sketch did replace a Crudlow.
Time will tell, but hope it's the former, as an addition.

On a completely unrelated note...
After working on these Wonky Ads, I have a whole new appreciation for Tom Sutton's work on the original ads, especially when it comes to the character design! I think most people tend to prefer Norm Saunders style, which I can appreciate since he was such an amazing painter. But Sutton had some real chops as an illustrator and I think we sometimes forget that iconic characters such as Ajerx and Hurtz Tomatoes are actually his creations. No doubt, Norm took them to a whole new level, but I think a lot of the second series titles would've had a completely different flavor had it not been for Sutton. Anyway, just wanted to give props to one of the Wacky founding fathers!

So these are punch out cards, not stickers? Are they a larger, postcard size? How does one store them? If a non-rich guy such as myself wanted to buy one or two packs, is there any chance of getting a full base set? Or am i better off going for your people’s leftovers???
-

That's correct, they're punch out cards. The size is identical to the original wacky ads. Postcard sized storage pages can be easily be found on Amazon. From the online description, you'll be able to get a complete base if you buy one set (includes the 7 main cards, a multi-ad card and a checklist title card in a souvenir envelop). Keep in mind, there are 4 different multi-ad cards, so you may want to get an extra set to trade with. Just a suggestion...

Please don't give them any ideas!! >(
I love that the perfs are real. Maybe I'll pop a set out - I had fun making my borderless Old School sets ;D

Do you know if Sutton actually came up with the gags too, or did he work like Saunders from original gag roughs by Lynch & Spiegelman, etc? Would be really cool to find out if Sutton ever did any of the non-Saunders 1-16 Wackys. Like discovering Saunders' "Snoot" from the 85's, etc. (Haven't been on here for a bunch of months, so it looks like I missed A LOT of news... didn't even know there were brand new Wacky Ads out there).
-
I just bought a set. Thanks so much for these Neil and thanks for posting on Greg's site too. These look awesome and I hope to see many more. I've always loved the Wacky ads!

I'd also be curious to know if Sutton did anything beyond the ads. Honestly, I doubt it, since his style is very unique and I don't see any obvious examples in 1-16.
My guess is that he probably had help with the Wacky ad concepts, but that's just based on what we know about the other series. That would've been a great question to ask Jay...

For the past few months I haven't been INTO the hobby as I normally am but this set provided needed revitalization after seeing one of the gags.

Just for Fun...
Here's some unofficial binder pages I put together for the Wonky Ad set. These are suitable to print on your home printer and are designed for standard 3/4" 3-ring note books. I've attached the front panel and the spine here, but I'll wait to post the back to avoid any spoilers.
Enjoy and Happy Collecting!

Looking forward to receiving my sets!

It’s Friday, so guess what that means?
Time for a shipping notice, of course!
Thought I was getting my July Wacky set, but it’s actually my Ads set.
That’s quick!

Cool! Those July sets should be soon as well. Usually a few days after the newest set shows up on Topps.

Not here - just checked, and mine are already in Queens so I should have them tomorrow.

ugh. not when you pay extra for fast shipping. the package just sits around for two days before going anywhere.
this is probably the 5th or 6th straight Wacky shipment on a Friday in a row. It's clearly intentional.

I agree. I fully expect that my July sets will not ship until this Friday. But, if I don't pay for special shipping, my Wackys often go on an odyssey to get from Florida to New York, and then there is the risk that they will never arrive.

Yep, the infamous 3 day “overnight” shipping.

Maybe it should be called "overnights" shipping to take into account the multiple nights (and days) required.

Wacky Ad envelopes in hand. Surprised they were packed in a small white box and not the usual brown cardboard.
Multiple envelopes in a single bubble wrap too, reducing the packaging tremendously.
Got sketches at a 1:3 ratio, vs advertised lower 1:4. Nice!

One of my orders arrived just a little while ago. Very nice quality!! And I love the Wonkys!!
I had thought that the sketches would be Wacky Ad titles, if not Wonky titles from the set, and so was surprised at some of them. One is actually of an ANS title. I don't have a working scanner here, but will see if I can get decent photos to post. And, there will be another (smaller) batch arriving tomorrow.

Do you think maybe that the artist had his young son or daughter draw and color this sketch card?

Talk about a conversation piece. It has a certain pedigree, IMO.

If I'm getting a sketch from an "artist" I expect it to be better than a child can draw or me for that matter.

Do you think maybe that the artist had his young son or daughter draw and color this sketch card?
https://www.ebay.com/itm/324766137071?hash=item4b9d91faef:g:cjsAAOSwjFVhJqcn
I would be not pleased if that was the sketch I got. Holy crap that is terrible.

And yet it sold for $50. I wouldn't have paid $5.

My two sketches. First is by, hmmmm, can you guess? lol and the second is Greg Gages.
I can't really b-tch much, I only bought 4 packs, so beat the sketch odds, kind of.

That Scarburst doesn't even look like a wacky is any sense of the word. More like childish. How the hell did this guy get a spot on the sketch list??? I can do better!!!

It has zero value to me. Terrible.

I think Nik is channeling Jung Wa Im

The NIK! cards might not have gone over like expected but he's actually an excellent artist. Just has a very, very different style than what people are used to. His GPK sketches are actually very cool. They are a lot of fun, weird and experimental.
-
What the NIK! sketch cards look like - did anyone ever stop and think that's the general idea? That this is deliberate and they're supposed to look like what they look like just to be different?
I say let's ask Nik himself, if we can, and see what he says.

That's what I just said. He does a Nickelodeon / modern cartoon style. It's all deliberate.

It still looks like (to me, anyway) something a 4-year old would draw and color in. I'm sure he's capable of much better, but it's just not reflected in the Wonky sketches. Similar to some of the artists for Old School 4 that Topps never used again for sketches. If you go to their website you are amazed with how good they are in comparison to what they sketched for Topps.

Does anyone know which artist this one is from?

It's a return I requested. I am so happy that Chad was able to do that one for me.

I have an extra red hat Blistered that I'd trade for a blue hat Blistered.

Hey Neil!
Do you have any more info on this variation? Are both hat colours out there? Were they printed at the same time?

I've heard tell that all of them have a variation...

Well this makes things interesting….

From the poking around I've done so far, I have only added the Pepsea var difference to the list. Still haven't figured out Haunts, Nerdz, Voo-Doo or Glum. Think the problem will be that you won't find single cards on eBay...don't wanna buy whole sets to get one or two vars...

Yeah I agree with you. Will be interesting to see if each card has a variation or if it’s just the ones you’ve noticed so far.

Neil has said that there should be variations for all 7. So happy hunting to you all. Will be interesting to find out what are the variant cards and if they are short printed or have the same production run as the others

Nerdz variants - green or red bow tie, but only on the bottom guy!

I can't figure out the Pepsea-Cola variants. Anyone?
-
I don't have a picture but the 2 versions of the Haunts are "Tomato Paste that will Haunt Your Stomach Forever" and "Make the Switch from Red Tomatoes to Dead Tomatoes with Haunted".
-

The colors of the fish are switched.

The colors of the fish are switched.
Thanks! I didn't see it at first because images of printed cards for one variant are out there but not the other. The Topps preview image shows the green and orange fishes are flipped.

What will be fun now is to find out if the variants were evenly printed. If not, which ones are the rares?
I only bought one set, so I'm happy with whatever version I own.

I don't think they are even. I just went through 14 sets to assemble one set of all 7 variations. Hopefully there's nothing different about the checklists, since all 14 I just looked at were the same :P

Actually, the fish themselves are switched!

When you have a chance, can you please post a list of the variants you noticed are the short prints?

I just went through 23 sets I had here. These are the short prints:
Pepsea with the small green fish on the left and the larger orange fish on the right (got 1)
Haunts with "Tomato Paste That Will Haunt Your Stomach Forever!" (got 2)
Nerdz with the green bow tie (got 3)
Blistered with the black helmet (got 3)
Monkey Way with the banana logo on the helmet (got 1)
Voo-Doo with the triangle on the mask in red (got 4)
Glum & Empty with the top right candy pieces in pink (got 2)
I know I have more sets somewhere, must look.........
I never would have noticed this because I was deliberately trying not to handle these lest I damage the perfs :o
-
The variations make the set even more interesting!
Thanks, Raw Goo. I'll have to take a look at mine being that I ordered late and received my set late.
I just wonder if all variations were printed all at once and randomly mixed together or there was an early/late printing with variations being more prevalent later on in the run.
-----------------------
Just checked mine: 0 of 7 "short print"variations.
-
Interesting that the Glum & Empty variation is on the Wonky itself, while the other variations involve the background art/text.
If Topps had mentioned the variations, they might have sold more sets. I should have 17 more sets somewhere to check. Fingers crossed that I'll find them tomorrow!

Agree - Topps would have attracted "completists" like myself and I definitely would have bought more sets.

They absolutely would have sold more sets. The variations make this set even more exciting. Wacky Packages really needs a brand manager to promote these sets. Most of the set promotions are done by the artists on this site. Topps can’t even really update their Facebook page and they don’t promote WP on their other social media accounts. Really too bad.
-
I would have bought more sets too. Anyone have any variations to trade or sell?
-
I noticed that these variations come mostly one per pack (if they show up) but the very first pack I opened had 2 variations!

I just posted in the trade section a little while ago.

I now have the set of 7 Variant Wonky Ads and am impressed with how subtle some of the variations are. Do we have any idea if/ when a second Wonky set will be made? Mt sense is they will sell alot more sets if we know Variants will be included.

I hadn't been on the forum for a while and was reading threads a couple of days ago and came across this one. I purchased a pack of the Wonky Ads but had no idea there were variants. Last night, I pulled out my single pack and checked and nearly fell over!

I was amazed! Now I have to go get the base versions and decide if I want to try and get the other 4 variants.

Great pull. I averaged 1 variation per set.

Let them know you want another set and if enough people express an interest, maybe we'll see a Series 2 in 2022!
