Norman Saunders
Long live the true "King of Wackys"
-
You said it, brutha!
-
Even before Wacky's Norm was an master illustrator. The book that his son David Saunders put out on Norm enlighten me to what a GREAT AMERICAN ARTIST Norm was. Wackys were just the clincher in his long storied career. AMEN!

Hey guys,
Norm's wife is from the same town in Nebraska as I am. I learned this when I sent David Saunders a Topps candy box flat that Norm's artwork appeared on, so he could have it for his family archives. Apparently, when David was growing up, the Saunders family would visit that Nebraska town for a time every year.
Beyond that, when Norm retired, he spent his last years living in my hometown and was buried there after his death. As a Wacky Packages fan, it's odd to think I might have seen him during my late teens, but only recognized him as a stranger, an old gentleman I did not know, and not the creator of so many of my favorie childhood stickers. Someone who I would have certainly wanted to speak to.
I know a lot of music and literature fans will visit the resting place of their idols. I was considering doing the same, with regards to Norm. He is buried in my hometown, and I visit every summer. I always endeavor to be respectful, but would it be morbid to visit Norm's tombstone? Or take a photo? Is that taking fascination with an artist too far?

Nah, stick a Wacky on his stone. He seems like the kind of guy who would have got a kick out of it.

I was actually thinking about leaving a pack of Old School there...
-
I would say the same, I'm sure a Old School sticker. Oddly enough my family would visit NYC for the summer in the late 7o's and would stay 4 blocks from Norms home in NYC. Back when I was a kid I would walk around all the Brownstones in the area so who knows how close i was to him.
I hope he appears on a stamp one day as it would be the ULTIMATE wacky

What city in Nebraska? Sorry I haven't read his biography yet. Just curious how close it is to me.

While visiting my hometown two weeks ago, my brother and I endeavored to track down the final resting place of Norman Saunders, and we managed to do so. It's odd to think he spent the last few years of his life in the small town I grew up in.
With care, I temporarily placed a few Flashback stickers around his stone, to mark the endurance of his Wacky Packages work, and also laid down an Old School display box, to mark how his work continues to inspire.
My beloved grandparents were only a couple hundred feet to the west of the Saunders', and this journey to find Mr Saunders gave me reason to visit them as well. It was quite an afternoon.
Though I hesitated at first, I'm hoping that by sharing these two photos I took, no disrespect is felt - as none is intended.

Does anyone know if the PDF file that was being kept of all of David Saunders stories about his dad including artwork from the other forum had been updated and where can we get a copy?

That was a nice thing to do. I wish you could have left the items there though. Maybe stuck the stickers to the stone. It's not defacing if the intention is good. Maybe next time you can stick a few stickers.

That Lipoff is one sweet piece of art.
I think I would try to get someone like Jay to repair the lettering with paint if I owned that. Of course, Greg would probably have to get his cut.
-
The type was done with Letraset Press type, to replicate the original and keeps it's true originality, someone would need to track this down. Paint could simulate but not hold it's original work.
Norm would paint the basic painting and Topps art staff would add the text in the Brooklyn studio

When people frame the original Wacky art, often they do not have a mat cut. Without a mat , there is space between the surface of the art and the glass. Then the Letraset lettering sticks to the glass, and the art is never gonna be the same. Even the paint will stick to the glass if the frame hangs in a place where the humidity is high, so the solution to preserving this art is to have a mat cut for it when you frame it, and don't let the surface of the painting directly touch any other surface, especially a non-pourus surface like glass or plexiglass.

Excellent advise for framing any type of art work. Thanks Jay!

Jay, when was the last time you used Letraset type? I can honestly say I last used it in 1991 when the Mac computer took over and there was no need to set type by hand anymore. It was very fragile if you didn't burnish down well or it would flake off with humidity or heat

-
I haven't used Letraset or any rub off type since 1985. Photoshop made it obsolete around then. I used it once since then...around the mid 90s...to make a prototype for the first Non-Sport Update magazine cover. But on the final first issue of the printed mag, it was computer type. I still have about 30 pounds of the stuff...But it is all larger magazine style headline typefaces. I have hundreds of sheets of it. Nothing small enough to replace Wacky type, though. If anybody wants it... take it away for $50 plus UPS shipping costs. It's an 18 inch pile of sheets of the stuff.

A few more Norman Saunders illustrations / artworks will be coming up for auction in early 2011. Here are two.

This unlisted piece kind of tickled my Saunders radar. It has just been submitted and there are no details listed yet. I'm just guessing at this point. I have no idea and I'm no expert but it seems Saunders-like to me.

I know what you mean, but I have seen varying degrees of detail in his works throughout his lifetime and something about it piqued my interest. Yes these are all Heritage again.
This one also is pretty rough compared to others but there are some elements in it that remind me of his stuff. (the syringe for one)

David Saunders can correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure the one one on the left, the actual Saunders piece is based on him, he used a mirror and photos of himself alot and the women were often based on his wife...

When I lived in Chicago about 25 years ago, I was coming home from work. On the El train I saw a guy with a painting of a Western paperback book cover under his arm. It wasn't by Saunders, but I quizzed him about it. It turned out he worked at a Balentine Books warehouse in a western suburb. He was coming home from work. He told me that they were cleaning up the warehouse and came up with a bunch of old Balentine paperback cover paintings. They were done with gouache on illustration board, and they just gave them to the warehouse employees rather than throwing them out. I don't think Saunders ever worked for Balentine. But nevertheless, who knows how many covers paintings for the westerns he did will turn up in the future as a result of this type of thing.

Yup, you either open your wallet a little wider and go to battle or give up before it starts, and I would probably pick giving up.
I remember when I first starting getting serious about collecting Wackys there was Kirk Daniel, and you knew if he was bidding on something you wanted you had about a 1% chance of winning. I remember at one point he told me he had over 15 complete 67' die-cut sets. One set wasn't enough for him!

I have been told that Heritage is slowly piecing out a collection of thousands of pieces of art which included many Saunders pieces. This may create some opportunities for some of us to pick up a piece as even the big money guys aren't going to run every piece up to $20-$50k. I am still pissed I missed that $4k piece in August.

Speaking of Norm, does anyone here need a set of the 54 cards put out by David Saunders depicting some of the coolest artwork that Norm had done over the years? I seem to have several extra sets that I must have accumulated when they went on sale several years ago. $12 shipped.

I just got my twice-weekly Hamilton Books catalog. The huge 368 page NORMAN SAUNDERS book has been remaindered. Brand new copies of the $40 book are now available for $9.95 from www.hamiltonbooks.com So in case you missed the book when it first came out... Now you can get it for less than 1/4 the original price.
