Title: ANS7 Sketches
Post by: paste_anyplace on August 28, 2010, 10:51:13 PM
Here are the first three of my ANS7 sketches to hit eBay. Next week I'll try to get permission from Topps to post more.

ironically these are the only sketches to show up other then the Grazin Bran sketch. You did a hell of job. It's kinda ironic that you would have 3 of the 4 sketches

I have a hunch that we may not see too many ANS7 sketch cards on ebay. We got the first few but in the last couple days its been very quiet with sketch cards. I thing that we might be hitting the wall with sketch cards. I could be completely wrong but that is how most series go.

Well, Target just got in their first shipment of gravity feeds, which appear to have been scarfed up pretty quickly, and many comic shops won't even have any boxes until Wednesday, so it will be several days at least before people like me who are buying at retail stores will have more packs to open.  I also intend to buy a lot of bonus boxes and blisters when they finally hit shelves and I'll bet a lot of other collectors will, too.  As more packs get stocked (and restocked), more sketches will show up.

Plus anything folks have bought from Topps directly won't start shipping until Monday.  So, I would expect more sketches to show up as more product gets out in the wild.

These sketches are tough to pull. I opened 34 boxes and didn't find one. That is only 816 packs so it's not even close to the 2300 packs needed to find a sketch but I thought with some getting lucky I might as well. I did find 2 golds and 2 autographs so I did beat the odds somewhat.

Just when I think Topps cannot get any more outrageous with their odds for certain chase cards, they seem to outdo themselves.  I predict the sketch card odds for ANS8 will be 1:5000 packs.

Great sketches! I especially like the Crust and Quacker. Is the Crust reminiscent of the image on a t-shirt that surfaced not to long ago? Sorry I don't have more specifics on that, hopefully you'll know what the hell I'm talking about.

It's hard to say because the sketch cards are so rare with this series, we can't really compare it to the Postcard or Old School sketches.

The odds are longer than color sketches from Old School, but still, there were 6 times as many produced, so one would think there will be a lot more following the first 4 that will come up for bid.  Of course, if someone has the money and intent to buy every sketch they can, and the prices get well into four figures, then most Wacky collectors can expect to be left out.

I got in that Creep sketch and it is really amazing! It's much better in person than in the photo. I would love to get more but these things are going to be really tough! There has only been 4 on ebay so far which is really odd or they are really tough to get. No one on the forum other than Jerry has pulled one that I am aware of.

Thanks! I had the good fortune to get my feet wet on Wacky sketches with Postcards series 4, and I had been hoping for an opportunity like the ANS7 sketches. They were a lot of fun to do.

No irony here though. I scanned all of my sketches, but I only posted the ones that have been seen courtesy of eBay. I'm still going on Topps' direction as of a month or so ago, which was that I was not to post anything that had not already been made public unless I clear it with them. Which I'll try to do this week.

Thanks! I do know the Crust shirt that you mean. I wasn't thinking of it, but it was probably a subconscious influence. Topps wanted to see the full package in the sketches, and I followed that direction most of the time, but I found it hard to showcase the characters that way. So I did a number of them like the Crust in which I floated the character off the package. I used this Crust design 4 times with slight variations, 3 in black and white and 1 in color.

Glad to hear that you like the sketch. I drew about 7 unique variations on that Creep design. Three others have monster eyes/partial faces similar to yours, but you have the only one that's sort of a reptilian face, and all of the others are rendered in black and gray only, no color highlight like on the one you have.

It's a great look, very well done! I'd love to pull any sketch but pulling the color Crust would be the ultimate.

Plus, you knew what the hell I was talking about! It doesn't happen that often.

I added two more of my sketches that have come to light either on the forum or on eBay. Haven't had time yet this week to call Topps to ask to post more.

I used that Crust design three times in black/white/gray (with slight variations) and once in color.

I only drew the one Gloom...

Wow! At first glance I thought the Crusts that Cardgary has now for 2 grand was the same one that Rob won for $400. Now I see the difference. Either way Cardgary will never get 2 grand and Rob still got a hell of a deal!

I also have to mention you got that forum table thing down!

I also wonder why some artists are showing up more than others? Did certain artists get their sketches in sooner than others and it's first in first out or just luck of the draw?

I wonder if he didn't put the BIN that high knowing he wouldn't get it, but hoping that a Best Offer would be a grand or more.

Thanks... the expando is even more fun when images are in a table I think.

I just looked up ebay auctions on my iPhone and Cardgary's sold for $1200. It's the same person that has bought 3 sketches tonight and it's not Leslie. Someone with e***s (235). They are on a terror to collect sketches. Good luck to those who pull them because this guy is buying!

Are you on a Mac using Safari? Safari with expando is super fast. I use Firefox on my Mac because 1password is easier on firefox than on Safari but Safari is a lot faster!

Brent got his done way before me. Mine arrived at Topps on the drop-dead due date! I have to take Topps at face value when they say it's all random.

For all we know, a bunch of Jay's sketches have been pulled and are happily residing in the hands of non-forum collectors who will never put 'em on eBay...

Plug that scanner into your Mac and ditch the PC. I use VueScan on my Mac and it works great! There really isn't much need for a MS OS these days because you can have both on a Mac!

The biggest problem that I have with expando is when the image expands so large that part of it is off the screen.  The system does put a scroll bar at the bottom of the image when this happens but when I move my mouse down to the scroll bar, the image shrinks again.  You can never scroll the image to the right when in expanded mode.

And I am using a PC with Firefox.

Band-ache sketch hit ebay from Cardgary.  I love Gary's whining about the number of cases he opened and how he contradicts himself during his numerous lines of begging people not to give him low offers.  So which is it, only his third sketch for sale under this id, his first sketch?  Are other's copying his ebay verbiage or does he have multiple seller ids?

"Please keep in mind that I have opened TOO MANY packs and this is only the third sketch I have pulled. This would make my odds 1:5350. "

"Please take a moment and think before sending an offer. Understand what I have listed here and that I have opened case after full case and this is my first sketch pulled. "

What a clown!

So basically he is saying he has pulled 3 sketches with his odds being 1:5350? That would mean if he purchaed his boxes at around $30 each he would have spent around $20K+. who has issues here? This is just crazy to spend that kind of money for a series. He's probably only recouped about $3K of that. He will be out of biz soon.

Yup, and he's taking out his frustration with his sketch prices, trying to make it all back with inflated prices.  Topps made the odds so tough it's obviously not a great series for those trying to profit from it, and if Gary is telling the truth about how many sketches he's pulled vs amount purchased he's been pretty unlucky on top of it all.

My guess is he might be full of crap since he has only listed about 3 golds. I will have to look it up. Anyway, he sounds like a desperate or frustrated man.

OK, I looked it up and he has only listed 3 golds. That doesn't tell you how many he has offered offline but I really don't think he really has opened that many packs. Although it does seem kinda strange that there hasn't been many golds sold lately. This also goes for new listings. It's strange that the golds have would have dried up faster than the sketches. It's all too strange. I have a hunch that ANS7 may take some big buyers out of biz. They may have gotten lucky with their first pull but after that it's been dry. I think this has happened to Cardgarys. He is now scrambling to recoup his cost. This is not a good business to be in right now. The odds are totally stacked against you.

I also want to add one thing - we still haven't seen about 20 OLDS color sketches. That, to me, is really strange since this was a very small run. I thought we would have heard of all color sketches. So where did they disappear to?

... and added this section (with Topps' permission), which is comprised of sketches that  may still be lurking in packs. I'll add more over time:

Very nice collection. I just wish you would have drawn about 5000 of these so I'd have a shot at getting some at a fair price.

I also want to add one thing - we still haven't seen about 20 OLDS color sketches. That, to me, is really strange since this was a very small run. I thought we would have heard of all color sketches. So where did they disappear to?

Didn't we try to track how many boxes forum members bought/opened, and come up significantly below 3,650?  Old School was promoted in NSU, there was even a promo card in the magazine, and card collectors had plenty of time to order boxes.  I'm thinking a number of non-sport collectors got lucky, and added color sketches to their private collections.  Also, there are Wacky collectors who don't use the forums -if I wasn't on the forums, you wouldn't have seen my two color sketches.  And, as Ernie says, there are still unopened boxes out there.

That must be it.  I remember Greg telling me the extent of collectors that "fly under the radar" and I was surprised.  For some reason these folks like to stay in the background and not make it a social hobby like we do, so if they get a nice sketch it will probably never be seen by us.

HUH???  you asked where the missing old school color sketches were.... I suggested they are in sealed old school boxes which are for sale on ebay regularly and in sealed envelops(I inadvertantly used the word pack).

Right..I still have a bunch of WOS I unopened boxes...sealed...due to laziness NOT hoarding  :P

I don't know how you guys do that.  I couldn't last a week with unopened boxes like that!  I've bought unopened packs before to get the wrapper or the cards inside, and I've told the sellers prior to buying it.........if you don't want this pack opened don't sell it to me!  At least I'm honest.

I think we came up with about 50% of the boxes accounted for.

Actually I think that Gary used this guys verbiage.

I don't. It's just ironic.

This is some MAJOR kickass stuff!  I am glad I don't have an ANS7 set yet, maybe I can yet pull one of these while slowing killing packs to make my set!

Here's a batch of Crusts that I drew for the ANS7 sketch cards.

(http://s2.postimage.org/2ubhb9rqc/ans7_sketches_batch_crusts.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/2ubhb9rqc/)

I was reminded of these because one of this batch is on eBay at the moment:

Ha, I should have thought of that. I could have used an assistant like Warhol did, that sketch card deadline was tight. The Crusts were an attempt to do a bunch of sketches quickly that would still be somewhat unique.
