Title: WP Old School 8 (w/ Spoilers)
Post by: slamjim on October 30, 2019, 01:56:46 PM: Totally radical! Wacky Packages Old School 8 goes on sale next week on Thursday, Nov. 7th. The new set takes a detour to the 1980s taking on some iconic brands such as Mr. T Cereal, Hi-C Eccto Cooler, Atari, Gatorgum, Aqua Net, Garbage Pail Kids and much more. 30 cards, 3 puzzles, checklists, Ludlow, tan and white back variations, rough cards, sketch cards and pack header card (subject to change or me not getting this all correct, ha).

Sorry, no Peanuts stuff in the new set. I did not put Mrs. Klean in the Mr. T parody.

1990s is always a possibility. Let's see how the 80s goes first. I have a lot more 70s I want to do as well and I kinda prefer the 60s over the 90s. The visuals on the 60s products are fantastic.

Sorry if I missed it, but am I correct in saying these are only being sold by the box ? How do we purchase them? How much are they and what forms of payment are accepted. Thanks. Jeff

Hey... that's a cool idea. 1940s/50s products had a distinct look. Would be cool to see what Wackys of those would look like. Although you'd have to call them, "Golly Gee, Swell, Snazzy Packages" or something.

pre 70's would be cool as it would still give me that nostalgic feel... even if a bit before our time. For me, I never could get into any of the post 1980's Wacky titles. I started collecting again in the mid 90's due to the nostalgic aspect of it all. Nothing against the purists who collect all Wackys regardless of the era...

Thanks Dave! Looking forward to the new set. I also like the older product packaging and visuals and would love to see those in a set.

I did suggest that idea to them and they want to see how this does. I want to do the 1920s, 40s, 60s, etc.

it's a strange situation though, as Topps didn't reprint even *one* of their wrappers for any of these properties for the 80th anniversary set.
A simple reprint. Beyond ridiculous.
That 1st series C-3PO wrapper is iconic, and those SW cards were tremendously popular and a huge boost to their bottom line in the late 70's. A glaring hole in their so-called "celebration".

If so, anyone planning on a group buy or putting together a lot of sets for sale? Just looking for a base set with the puzzle/coupon backs and the wrapper header card. Not really after any of the variants or sketches.

I second this, though I fear that ship has sailed, as far as Topps is concerned.

I may be in the minority, but I really liked having a bunch of the die cut stickers to stick on stuff. Oh, maybe it wasn't that many that I actually stick with each series, but I used 'em.

Now, they're UV-resistant instant collectibles, that have to be protected because of their high cost. Not the most awful thing or the end of the world, but I liked the disposable sticker fun that the original Old School box-full-o-packs offered.

And I second your take, Jason. Sadly, for both of us, the ship does indeed seem to have sailed. I'm pleased to get images that are true to the spirit of the original series in tone and quality. And I look forward to an 80's spin (even if the 70's is more my decade). Not sure how to get Topps to change its mind, but if anyone has any pull, please use it.

Bonne Bell Lip Smacker. They also licensed up with lots of brands like Dr. Pepper, Orange Crush, Hires, 7Up, Tootsie Roll, etc plus their normal plan flavors. The Dr. pepper was the biggest seller and the most famous. They even brought it back as a retro version a few years ago.

Three different puzzle backs - wow! Last time the pencil backs had three copies of the same puzzle, and I broke up some pencil sets to make three sets of a puzzle and checklist for people here who didn't care about an entire pencil set, but wanted a puzzle and checklist.

I was asked which three different paintings I thought would make good puzzles. I know Garbage Fail Kids is one but I'm not sure right now what the other two puzzles are. I'll ask tomorrow.

This one was more of a bonus goofy thing. This brand was the major competitor to Chuck E Cheese. It's actually an interesting story. It's also the basis for the hit video game franchise Five Nights At Freddys. And it's a huge '80s icon nowadays so I wanted to get it in. They don't have a lot of products but this watch was a holy grail to win with your tickets.

I just looked up the rough art for this one that's in the section on the Lost Wackys thread featuring Dave's ANS6 unpublished rough art on lostwackys.com and found out the words are the same, but the picture isn't.

Agreed - I am skimming past the images in this thread because I want to enjoy the new Wackys when I can hold them in my hand!! And I want to really look them over, not just put them away. Just knowing that there will eventually be an Old School 9 is more than enough for me.

Of course, I'll pack up and mail out everyone else's Wackys before I stop and smell my own set ;)

Yes, I made sure to keep all my roughs the way I did them originally this time. Total pencils and with anything on there before I changed things. Dr. Pepper is the main product associated with Lip Smacker so I changed it up. Gaggles was originally called Gargles also. I didn't like that the gg was gone so I made a name switch for the painting. There are some other gag changes as well throughout.

Only 10??? Wow, I did beat the odds!! I was particularly pleased when I saw Whale-O's, don't think I have any version of that in my collection.

Did a lot of artists do such a limited number of sketches? I put them into pages as I pulled them, not by artists, but I'll have to tally up my pulls.

For a while they were all the rage as a movie theatre treat, I guess by turning ice cream into a finger food, that appealed to some. Didn’t make as much sense for home consumption, as the old bowl-and-spoon model still worked fine. I thought they were way overrated. And these dippin’ dots you see now at malls and vending machines are beyond silly.

I remember this commercial because I used to put my kids up on my shoulders too. I never let them eat ice cream while they were up there though.

The art is weak on some products. Sinnoman, Trapper Keeper, Nervs - not the best, even Mr. Peanut on Puffers doesn't have the right feel to the art. The Choco-Viles character looks like it was drawn in photoshop, sorry.

Too many toys and odd product choices. Slowbiz? Princess Pom-Pom? My Wet Monster? Ugh.

Fartari (snigger, snigger, looool)? Really, you had to go there?...oy vey. As if ANS wasn't enough for potty humor, I thought old school was better than that.

Maybe some of this is due to the focus on 80's products, but whatever the reason, I hope old school 9 gets back on track. Disappointed.

Can't please everyone! Most people are telling me it was their favorite set yet. Different strokes. The Mr. Peanut is one of my favorite characters I've done. I defend it but respect if you don't like him. I did Choco-Viles in the vein of Cracked Jerk, Foolball, Super Cigar Crisp and a bunch of others and Trapper Keeper was a Lisa Frank gag so doing her style was the only way to go with it. I've not received any cards yet so I can't comment on white space around the cards.

As for toys...I always try to put in around 4 toys if possible and the 80s had some good ones. You're a 70s kid so She-Ra and My Pet Monster might not be for you but a lot of people dug those.

That's something I really don't like about this set - for some reason Topps put numbers on them, and to make room for those the image sizes are really reduced. In my opinion, "Old School" Wackys should NOT have numbers. And the smaller images make it terribly hard for these old eyes to see the details. Here's a pic showing a cereal title from Old School 7 between two cereal titles from Old School 8 - the new ones look like album stickers!

Unfortunately, even the ones I love (Aquatic net is awesome, cow tails, Mr. E, Bones, Frank N Stiff etc...lots of winners) are scaled too small and have that truly awful font for the number (and the point size of the number is way too big). Look at the cover sticker S8 Wacky packages - that has the size and spacing that the others should have. Can we get a reprint with the numbers removed and the art scaled up?

look at this 1985 card. Jumbo sized image, and easily fits the number and copyright in there. Minimal white space.

Well, I was being slightly facetious because I don't expect a reprint to happen, but the cost wouldn't need to be that high just to adjust the artwork and reprint unless their was a minimum set order or something. Well, it is all just wishful thinking ;D. Sounds like Dave didn't even realize they were going to shrink his artwork down. Wish he would've been able to see it first as I'm sure he would have said something.

2. The image that Patrick posted of Beastball is a good example of how the image should dominate the space with very little white versus the other way around.

3. Also agree OLDS should not use numbers. Use a checklist instead like the OS.

You would think they'd offer some proofs for the artist(s) to review as a final edit before production to correct any issues.

It never really crossed my mind that ANS titles were scaled down across the board as opposed to the Beastball example shown to illustrate the minimizing of white space in the OS era. I did notice several cases where long narrow products weren’t distorted to optimize space like they did in OS, but I guess common package shapes ran smaller too. I often had issues seeing details without using a magnifier, but I just chalked that up to modern packaging design being busier than their counterparts of the 70s.

In particular, I noticed this on the images presented in landscape format versus portrait throughout ANS. Many of the images just seem too small for the given space on the card leaving more white space than image.

"numbering" was that first nail in the coffin for Wackys. Norm Saunders's exit helped too, of course. But numbers were accompanied by stuff printed on the backs, then tiny 1986 stickers, then the 1991's being printed on thick card-stock with shiny, glossy film and weird artwork on the backs, and it just kept spiraling into something that pales in comparison to the originals. But that's mainly all about the PRINTING and PRODUCTION side of it.

With artists like Dave and Neil and George making up for the huge hole that Saunders left, the actual pieces themselves look great... but the packaging (thick, shiny card-stock with numbers) makes it a pain.

The reduced size of the images is definitely one of the things that stood out to me in a negative way. Some of the recent ANS might be improved by smaller images, but Dave's art work definitely is hampered by the reduced size. And what's the point of even having numbers anyway when there is a checklist and they're only sold in complete sets? There seems no benefit to Topps and only a significant negative to us collectors, many (all?) of whom are needing glasses without the reduced size any way. :sad:

I think that the numbers were in order to duplicate the 1985 series, since that's the one that introduced numbered Wackys, as far as I know.

Not to sound mean, but you need to brush up on your knowledge. The reissues in 1979-1980 were all numbered. Think they were first.

I guess you could argue that the Die Cuts in 1967 and Ads in 1969 were numbered.

I should've said that they were the first new series to be numbered.
