Title: ANS 7 Review
Post by: koduck on August 27, 2010, 05:03:59 PM
I thought I'd wait a few days to post this thread and give everyone time to get some stickers in hand.

What do you think of the new series? In other words, the artwork and the gags? Anyone have favorites yet?

Burnt Bees and Bumpkin Donuts, and Maggoty Ann are three of my favorites! Great artwork and writing all around!

I haven't had as much time as I want with the ANS7 stickers yet, but some really, really great stuff (and admittedly, some wackys I'm not crazy about.)  I agree Neil, Maggoty Ann is out of this world, and Burnt Bees is great!  Other favs:  Ghould Scouts, Just for Wolfmen,  Kreepy Kreme, Ditz, Grape Newts, Raven Bran, Log Coffin (wait, hmm, I'm seeing a monster pattern), Clunky, and Kiss Kat.  Looking forward to the weekend when I can relax and relish the wacky wave!

My initial impression is that I like this series alot and find some of the artwork to be stellar.

My faves so far (artistically speaking) are Ditz, V6, Grape-Newts, Twitley, Raven Bran, Smugglers.... for starters anyway.

Yeah, Twitley is a great gag.  Interesting to see such a political wacky.

I was just telling someone else that sticker #1 is an awesome scary Wacky, and that the trend continues in the set!  Like you, I need some time to really examine the artwork, but I agree with a number of your choices.  Ghoul Scouts, Just for Wolfmen, Bumpkin Dimwits, Stupid Pretzel, Kreepy Kreme, Ditz, Grape Newts, County Time, Raven Bran, Log Coffin, and Maggoty Ann are my present favorites.

Just opened my first packs tonight, and one thing I noticed that seem to stand out is the art seems cleaner and less cluttered than pasy ANS series.  It's significant enough where I'm wondering if the artists made a concerted effort to do them this way.  I need to digest them as little longer but overall I think this series may be my favorite ANS series so far!

I'm sad to hear you say this. Americans have always had a healthy habit of ridiculing politicians and government. But now we're turning around and ridiculing American citizens who stand up against the powers that rule. It could have been worse but then Topps got wimpy about it and put a politician on it instead of a patriotic guy with a flag shirt or something. It makes no sense to have a politician on there rallying against politicians. And spelling it wrong on his sign. What's that about? I'm not a member of the tea party or the Republican party. But I know that speaking out in defense of liberty is never a bad thing. This "gag" refers to them as complainers and idiots. No other Wacky has ever offended me before but this one seriously does. I'm going to buy the art and cook hot dogs over it.

Nice rendering though. The teacup is impressive.

I admit to being surprised that this gag was so political. Personally, I wouldn't want to see more than a sprinkling of topical/political titles; however, this one struck me as a funny parody worthy of inclusion (it's just too bad they couldn't squeeze in a "teabagger" reference - now that's a funny word).

I didn't really completely get the "polititions" thing either, but a quick Google search turned up a link to the top 24 ridiculous and misspelled Tea Party protest signs (the 4th one has "polititions")

I'm very curious to see an artist list -- if any of the artists are game to share information on which wackys they painted and if that's cool with the powers that be.  I always go through a new set and try to determine for myself who painted what.  Then fun to see how many I got right! Helps me hone my eye for different people styles.

I'm offended by Commie cleanser because of its complicity in spreading the agenda of Nixon and the Republican machine. They are simply turning around and ridiculing American citizens who stand up against powers that rule. They say they will "cleanse" the country by getting rid of hippies (who were speaking out for liberty, which is never a bad thing) and associates them with Communists. That's offensive and fascist. No other Wacky has ever offended me but this one seriously does, retroactively. And it's so totally not because I'm a Democrat, it's the principle.

I'm going to stick one of these Wackys onto Joe the Plumber's toolbox.

As for the idea of buying the artwork to destroy - yeouch!    Though I'm sure that'll be as effective as someone buying one of your works to destroy it, because they felt it was offensive to their personal sensitivities.

If you have the ANS7 Schnozmopolitan foil, compare it to the original album sticker (or Flashback). A joke is missing from the foil version.

It's accurate if all you want to observe about rallies is the kooks. Go to any liberal rally or any rally of any kind and you'll find the most obvious common trait is kooks. Kooks will show up at anybody's rally. I guess if the gag is referring to the kooks rather than the decent people at the core who really want to stand up for something then it's really not that bad. I don't mind jokes about liberals or conservatives. But I see the tea party movement as an action of the people, not politicians and I have some respect for that.

If the flattened cat bothers you then Tom & Jerry must be a horror show for you!

As it was, the line that was omitted was a watered-down version of the original line that Jay wrote. Check the rough:

Haven't had a chance to really look at the artwork in detail yet but overall was VERY impressed with it. Crispy clear and reminds me a lot of ANS1 (and my favorite ANS sticker, ChimpStick). Very colorful stuff and hope it is a sign of things to come (OS2+ and ANS8+).

The few Wackys that semi-offended me were: 1991 Pigtionary, 1991 Little Dead Kitten, 1991 DuckBar, and ANS1 Gravestones (believe it or not). There's something about the parodies of the newer series that can sometimes have an "edge" of grimness and/or anger that isn't as fun or funny for me as the vintage OS series.

With Little Dead Kitten for example, I don't think the blood is necessary at all. With DuckBar the duck appears really angry as opposed to confused/exasperated, and Pigtionary and Gravestones have a grimness I can't quite put a finger on.

I'm glad you were kidding about the art destruction.

I realize that we have become a more polarized society these days, at least politically-speaking, and it can make us seemingly humorless at times.  Clearly that's not the case, though.   There are things I support, and people I support, that are worthy of parody at times.   I'd like to think I've retained my sense of humor about the things I care about and support, and I hope we all can, while still caring, and taking things seriously.

A little off topic but I saw these little 4 & 5 oz cereal boxes at Walgreens today and they reminded me of the mini cereal boxes that'll be showing up in early September.
To try to keep it slightly on topic, I have placed them next to one of my very favorite ANS7 stickers.

WHERE ARE ALL THE WACKY FANS???  I've heard all about 'border color' and 'sketch cards'... and unfortunately now about which sticker is slightly offensive for whatever reason but not much about the jokes and paintings in this series that anyone likes. I'm afraid if all the talk is about which gags someone finds offensive the decision makers who put out this series will try to sanitize it more than they already have and all we'll be left with are 'Packages'... no more Wacky.
(You'll all be left fighting over Hannah Montana sketch cards... pink borders only... black borders will be considered too 'racial'.)

I'll even start... 'Just For Wolfmen' is a great title (I refuse to call it by its number) and the painting is striking and classic and the most memorable of the series for me. Kudos Dave. Great Wacky! I can't wait to own the original painting... which will be easy because all my competition will be broke chasing sketch cards by the time any of the paintings go up for auction.

If there is anything to complain about in this series, its how some of the art was reduced to make room for the stupid numbers. I want my Wacky's printed BIG.

PS. Some of us Wacky Artists ARE hippies... and we still love Commie Cleanser!!!

Good idea!

Some of my favorites on first blush (and I don't even think I've seen all the titles yet) are:

Sno Saps and Chickless - both hit that Wacky sweet spot for me - simple funny gags with great characters and clean beautiful art.

Old Slice, Raven Bran and Toupe' Ramen - all very clever, made me laugh and the art is top-notch.

I also liked the parodies that took it to the poor nutrition of the products - Stuffer's (man I lived on those in college), Blubber King, and Wobblers - I like my Wackys to have some "bite". OK, the groaning sound I'm sure that joke elicited, much like the slurping sound one makes at the end of a milkshake, means I'm done.

Or the inserts should be a pair of reading glasses or magnifying glass... hey, what if they could be printed with a thicker layer of varnish that had micro lens technology and (similarly to linticular) would auto magnify the entire surface of the sticker... making it look like the giant Old Schools. Hey Topps, get working on this.

Some questions about the new ANS 7 series:

What is MOB coffee spoofing?  I am curious to hear because I concluded that it must be a brand of coffee that is not sold near me in NJ.

What is up with the blank card with the ANS 7 Promo back?

Where will the bister packs and bonus boxes be sold?  Just Target & Walmart?

I will post my favorites after some more digesting, one of my Fav.s already is Just for Wolfmen !

Thanks...

Oh, and Snow Saps is a favorite of mine too... I forgot about it while I was ranting earlier because I don't think I got one in my first round of openings. Saw it previewed on the Wacky Facebook page. It time machined me back to the 70's (where I accidently kept my parents from kissing at the 'Fish Under the Sea' dance and my sketch arm started to disappear until I was struck by a Delorian and found myself back here in safe 'ol August 29, 2001).  Thanks again Dave.

If there is anything to complain about in this series, its how some of the art was reduced to make room for the stupid numbers. I want my Wacky's printed BIG.

PS. Some of us Wacky Artists ARE hippies... and we still love Commie Cleanser!!!

It's still a little early for me as I'm still trying to sort through everything there is to collect!  Typically the first few weeks are a little hectic with everyone trying to find them in stores and fill out their sets, but then after the dust settles a bit we usually scrutinize the titles individually.  No problem starting that now though!  I really like this series and I do think it will be my favorite ANS series.

Ok, I'll grant you that... maybe 'disappointed' is a better way to say it... or 'disappointed to death' would be more accurate (although we're not supposed to gag about death any more). The Wacky's that have a duck on them offend me the most. (Quacker Oats, Ducko Cement, Aquax, Duxie Cups... there are just too many to list.) Because they aren't really talking about 'ducks' now are they? We all know ducks 'float'... which means they don't weigh very much... and what also weighs the same as a duck? You guessed it. Topps has been waging Witch warfare for centuries. (Before Baseball cards, their series of 'Scarlet Letter' cards were all the rage.) They first tried publicly by burning them at the steak... or Post... Post Grape Nuts... Grape Newts... it's so obvious. The duck Wacky's are a subliminal way to turn us against witches once again... don't let this happen!!  It's a sad, sad world when we see a duck parody and laugh instead of showing some compassion.

   PS. Great MJB commercials.

There were some great ones though: Rat in the Cat, Dr. Sushi, Trucker's, Mentals, VLAD (great parody), ET Seize 'ems (my fave), Zenergizer, Newport, Mummorex, Drunken Donuts.

[Re: Small stickers] Agreed. Still wish they'd make a parallel set of 5x7's of all the stickers so we could really appreciate the art. We discussed this on an Old School thread -- maybe Topps will pick up on it. Also not sure why they didn't do the WOM series as W1-W20 or something instead of the "1 of 20" thing, or just make the numbers a different color (red?).

[Re: ANS7] Like Dr. Popper, I'm still assimilating, but this series has some really nice artwork and parodies. Seems like Wackys are back on track! Some art that really stands out for me on first blush: Crutch, Rat Guard, Vampire, Armor Maul, Air Sink (the fumes especially), Seagerm's, Ditz, Stupid Pretzels, Kreepy Kreme, Mountain Dude, Burnt Bees, Just for Wolfmen, V6, Log Coffin (the guys face), Clunky. For parodies first blush: Kizz Kat, beyond pollution, Old Slice, Kreepy Kreme, Snoresages, County Time, Tiny Cats, Mrs. Blabbermouths, Raven Bran, Ruffled, Simian Toes Crunch (lol!), 'Fraid, Grape Newts, Pinkies, Chickless (lol!), Ghoul Scouts (freakin creepy!), Hungry Mantis.

Haven't got to the WOM's yet. :)

P.S. Ducks Rule!

I like to scan them so that I can see all of the details my aging eyes are missing.  I'm always blown away at the stuff I completely overlooked.  I love holding the cards but I need to look at hi-rez scans to fully appreciate them.

WHERE ARE ALL THE WACKY FANS???  I've heard all about 'border color' and 'sketch cards'... and unfortunately now about which sticker is slightly offensive for whatever reason but not much about the jokes and paintings in this series that anyone likes. [...]
Don't know if it's too soon, but I'm going to start a new thread for ANS7 reviews.  I figure many (most?) people have a base set, so I'll plunge right in.  But speak up if a lot of you guys still don't have stickers in hand and I'll hold on posting additional reviews beyond the first few.

I may be a little early, but I thought I’d start a thread for ANS7 reviews.  A system that’s been used before and seems to work well is going through the set in numerical order and reviewing more than one sticker at a time.  So without further ado, my thoughts on the first three wackys.  I’d love to hear everyone else’s thoughts on these!

1.  Ghoul Scouts
One of my favorites in the new series.  I love the look on that little scout’s face – so cutely demonic!  The twist to her lips is so subtle, but makes her expression chilling, and that weirdly bristling hair and the arch in her eyebrows round out the kid’s inner ghoul.  Nice detail on her merit badges and the logo.  The overall gag really works for me and the puns on the names of the different Girl Scout cookies are hilarious.  Plus the Buy ‘Em or Else! tag line captures the sense of pressure I know I’ve felt when it comes to little troopers selling their wares, taken to an appropriately over-the-top extreme (see lifeless hand on the cookie boxes.)  Fantastic wacky in terms of both art and humor.

2.  Play-Doze
I appreciate the simplicity of this wacky -- harkens back to the aesthetic of the original series -- and the sleeping face on the lid is nicely done.  But all in all, this one doesn’t work for me.  Maybe the character isn’t goofy or moronic enough, even with the drool.  I guess in the end, it isn’t quite wacky enough.

3.  Just for Wolfmen
Another one of my very favorites.  The rendering of the wolfman’s hairy face is superb!  Even the little wolfman in the inset is finely detailed and check out what’s on the back of the mirror he is holding.  Great gag and lots of clever lines:  “Shampoo-in Scare Color For the Killer Look!  I love monster wackys and this is one of the best.

I usually don't have enough patience to wade through these long review threads but I will comment on these three titles:

Ghoul Scout:  I like the gag(s) but I think there is too much green on this one.  I suppose the actual packaging has a lot of green but the Wacky doesn't seem to have enough contrast.  This one did not make my ANS7 favorites list.

Play-Doze:  Zzzzzz  -  This one kind of bores me too.  I think there is a problem with the rendering of the "Play-Doze" label as it doesn't conform to the curvature of the can.  Give my Play-Dumb any day!!

Just for Wolfmen:  Now this one did make my favorites list!!  I too love the detail on the big wolfman.  Anyone know who the artist was on this one?  I also love the gag line "Gets rid of ugly (and dangerous) Silver Hair"!!

I'm not a big fan of the horror-themed Wackys, but Wolfman transcends the genre.

The previous Play Doh gag for ANS also seemed flat. Maybe the original product is too bland. I noticed the issue with the curvature of the label as well.

I do think Seagerms is really cool and VERY relevant in my area.  We have a lake in another county called "Grand Lake" in St Mary's Ohio and they had to completely shut it down because phosphorous and other chemicals from farm fields drained into it through streams and it caused what they called "algae bloom"  and it was so bad, it was releasing toxic fumes into the air around the lake.

I probably won't see this series for a few months.  All I've seen are the ones posted on the forums.  But the Twitley Tea one, I would say, seems to be the complete opposite of Wacky Packages humor.   While it mocks the common perception of the Tea Party, which the media has associated with racism and other negative attitudes, it mocks more bitingly the concept of "conspiracy theorists", and presents them as twits.  Since it is the power structure controlled media which gets to define what is "conspiracy theory" and what is  valid criticism of the power structure,  The suggestion here is that we should unquestioningly place our implicit trust in politicians, government and mass media.
This isn't the message that Wacky Packages were meant to convey.   How did this get through?  Is this  card is an early indication that Wackys are on the verge of becoming their opposite, in the same way that MAD magazine has over the years become the exact opposite of it's early self.
The early MAD comics and magazine accepted no advertising and conveyed the message that you're a jerk if you unquestiongly fall for media hype.  The current MAD with it's advertising pages and  collectable cover variations conveys the message that you're a jerk if you DON'T consume the mass media line.
I hope this Twitley sticker isn't an indication that Wacky Packages are on the same path to hypocracy . A chain is as strong as it's weakest link, and this gag, I'm afraid,  is finally that link.

Norm Saunders too  :P from the big Wacky Pack in the sky.

I will say overall it is a SUPERB well execute collection of Wacky. Love the fact that Topps acknowledges the Series as ANS 7 and not something else.

I will say with the plethora of products out there THAT HAVE NOT BEEN COVERED by Wacky artist. It was a little let down that they revisted titles covered in the past and in recent ANS Wacky.

I really didn't want another Tide or Doritos Or Krispy Creame becuase there are so many, many, many OTHER good  things to cover. The execution of those gags were great but I did not care to see them.

Also Air Sick has a typo- Polluted is missing an L below, This one also is my least favorite- seems a bit crude and unfinished. The Just For Wolfmen is AMAZING

I hope this is not the path. I've alway's loved Mad and Wacky's for their ability to bust on and expose the hypocracy of the media and common products plus give it the comedic spin. They reused many popular products again because the series had such a lag between series 6 and 7 not to mention most of the series 2-4 kids (at least) probably are out of Wacky collecting by now so the kids picking up this series are mostly newbies to Wackys.

Twitley and Beyond Petroleum were both very last minute add ins to the series (they actually originated in another small non-Topps (but connected to Topps) project that was shelved). One of the pieces I did, Sparker,  got bumped because of one of these I would think. I think they wanted to test out some topical stuff and have some newspaper worthy attention grabbers like Mountain Duo was. Stuff that would annoy some people and have some people cheering. I have much more I could say (good and bad) about them but I am hesitant to do so not really knowing if Topps wants us (the artists) to discuss them this way. So for now I am mum on them. I will say I did BP from start to finish.

They never gave me a reason. I guess they just didn't like it. I did use that one later to merge with the Ghoul Scout the idea of intimidation by the little gals. Looking back at the first one I can see that the cookies themselves work much better in the new one and the monster girl just didn't work well. A demonic girl is much better than a full blown monster.

Girl Scams was actually accepted for ANS6 but they wanted a few revisions. I was working on so many ANS6 paintings with a tight deadline I was never able to get back to it. When ANS7 came about I just wanted to go back to the ghoul theme which I liked better.

Thanks for your insight Jay.

You hit the nail on the head in the quote above. The media is to blame for misleading the public on what the Tea Party movement is all about. Which in my understanding is really just about citizens sick of being taxed to death (TEA = Taxed Enough Already), and wanting to clean house and get rid of the "same 'ol same 'ol" career politicians that don't give a darn about the people, but only care about keeping themselves in office.

I didn't have anything to do with Twitley, but I read it differently on the conspiracy theory angle. It seems to me that it refers more specifically to the Tea Party brand of conspiracy theorists, the folks who, for instance, are convinced beyond logic that Pres. Obama is secretly a Muslim or that he was not born in the United States.

Wackys in the 60s and 70s made fun of the fringe elements of the hippie and beat movements. Were all beats and hippies worthy of ridicule? Or just the ones who hitchhiked, loafed, and avoided work? Media stereotypes have always played into Wacky gags, haven't they?

I'd be surprised if Topps gave as much thought to these titles as we do.  I just can't see them sitting around a table scrutinizing these titles, but maybe I'm wrong.

Apparently they do. Jeff Zapata made a post about Twitley over on the BBQ forum disavowing any desire for it's conception and distancing himself from the message in the gag.

Since this thread is waffling back and forth between what's offensive or not, and what artwork and gags are good, and since I don't have any ANS7 in hand yet so I can't comment on the artwork or gags, I'll just say that the Wackys I find offensive are the ones that use the words "moron" or "idiot" in them, because in the medical community . . . ah fergit it . . .

Jeff told me to post this here as well:

For what it's worth. Some of us at Topps fought to keep that piece out. I was forced to include it in the series in the last minute. I thought Twitly Tea and the BP gags were not right for children in general. I bought Wacky's as a kid to hide from the real world.
Keep in mind there are many (top heavy) execs at Topps and as an Editor I need to do what I'm told. They believe by adding these gags it'll cause some controversy and may get news coverage. At least I think that was the idea. However, I do agree 100% that Twitley was not appropriate for the set. I state this so no one may think this Editor has any political agenda when making Wacky Packages. Also, that the gag does not represent my personal political beliefs. Hope you guys like the rest of the series. We all (artists, writers and editor) worked really hard on it.

Thanks for passing on this info Dave.  There are lots of Wackys that I don't like but have never been offended by any of them and probably because my appreciation for any given card is 90% art and 10% gag.
I'm a fan of illustration art in general and Wackys give me that plus the sentimental value from collecting Wackys as a kid. As far as being appropriate for kids, I remember liking some Wackys that I had no idea what the gag meant so hopefully nobody (including kids) is taking Wacky Packages too seriously because they really shouldn't be.

Here are just a few of the ANS7 cards that I really like so far...

I haven't scanned the Burnt Bees or Wolfmen yet but I really like those too.

.... Twitley makes my list for the rendering of not only the teacup, but of the tea and it's transparency.

I can't believe kids would even understand the Tetley gag so this was clearly written to stir adults. The fact that Jeff thinks it was to garner media attention is a good point and for that I give Topps some credit for the attempt.

If I was a Tea Party supporter, I can see how I might be offended. I'd rather Wackys not be this political simply because it's divisive, even if I agree with the sentiment. But I don't think that this Wacky is treading any ground that the old MAD magazine wouldn't also be willing to tread.

Here are some roughs next to the finished pieces. I love what the artists have done! I'm also not sure which artists painted which.

Thanks for sharing those Mark!  I wonder why they changed Hunks?  "Dashing" seems to go better with the preening tomatoes than the weight lifters.  Maybe they didn't want the "au naturale" line.

I would have saved this comment for the reviews thread but I can't wait until we get to this title (which is another reason why I don't have patience for the review threads).

I think the finished painting for Grape Newts is fantastic!  The witch and the little purple newt coming out of the top of the box are incredible!!  Kudos to whoever painted this one!  Somebody please fill us in on who it was!!

Congrats to Jerry for a nice score on his sketch card! It actually went higher than I thought it would. I stand by my $1000 price range for the sketches. It just depends on the sketch. Jerry got $700 and it wasn't an iconic wacky. I hope to see more show up and hope there are other cool ones.

Yeah, all I care about is if cool find images are posted or posted for sale and trade offerings.  Like I said, when I log in there, I rarely see more than one or two people online at peak times like now so I figured it can't amount to much. Beat reporter idea is a good one.

thanks for posting these! always great to see how the idea moves from sketch to final painting

at the top of my list would be Raven Bran. Man, there is *so* much more going on in the painting than the sketch, the artist really took it up a notch. A more realistic look to the raven, great color, very well rendered and good jokes.

at the other end would be Smuggler's. There's no detailing on the glass like the real jar has. And the change from 'concealing grape jelly' to 'stowaway jam' is a total fail, as jelly is clear and jam is not, while stowaway specifically refers to a person hiding away on a craft, and has nothing to do with stealing jewelry.

in between is Grape Newts - absolutely fantastic rendering of the witch and newts. Good play on the cereal title. But lizards aren't newts, so that knocks it down a big notch.

Thank you. Thank you. (I bow as roses are thrown at my feet). It went higher than I initially thought. I am pleased.

I see that a Play-Dumb by Jay Lynch setch just went up. It is a beautiful sketch. Looking forward to seeing how it does.

Has someone compiled a list of titles with biological errors? Maybe Topps needs a zoologist on their review board. I assume many biological errors are not mistakes but simply decisions that a similar creature just looks and visually works better in a particular circumstance. A honey bee at the bottom of the Sue Mee jar would never look as cool as that wasp does.

They could have used "Salamanders" instead of "Lizards". (It’s sooo easy to be an armchair critic!) The painting is incredible. How long until some of these titles become LTL prints?!

Additional post by Jeff Z I missed in the email he sent me:

Also, I don't think you'll be seeing  those types of gags in the future. I think it was more of an experiment rather than a new direction. The only reason I posted those comments was to let those  who know me on this board ( and see me at conventions) that it was not my personal decision to include sensitive political gags in the series. I'm not knocking us (Topps) or the gag, I'm just letting you guys know that's not me and not my bag.

The art is quite a bit cleaner. I noticed that right away. Wow.
Like Raven Bran, Mt Dude, Head and Smolders and Crispux. The foils are very nice also. Only bought ten packs to start out with. Need some more!

Here are some roughs next to the finished pieces. I love what the artists have done! I'm also not sure which artists painted which.

Mark, thanks for sharing your original sketches for these four.

I actually like when the art is cluttered with a lot of stuff to look at, as long as it doesn't take away from the title of the product. But if you guys meant "clean" in regards to the rendering quality of illustration, lettering and perspective, then I am in 100% agreement.

I don't care for the cluttered look.  I guess it's because the 1970's originals were very simple and clean, so that's what I gravitate to.  When they are simple and clean it highlights the art and gag better.

In order, This is how I like these 3- JFW, GS, and PD.

The early MAD comics and magazine accepted no advertising and conveyed the message that you're a jerk if you unquestiongly fall for media hype.  The current MAD with it's advertising pages and  collectable cover variations conveys the message that you're a jerk if you DON'T consume the mass media line.

Jay,
What do you think about the fact that Topps is now placing advertisement cards in their packs in place of real cards? Did you notice they are doing this? Seems to fit your Mad Magazine profile.

My take is they are advertising themselves so it's not at all analogous with MAD advertising other products.

OK, trying to keep the thread somewhat on track, I'll start with the first three Wackys that were named in the thread.

1. Ghoul Scouts: I love the gag and the characters... I do agree with Loren, though, that there's too much green. I understand the box itself is green and that the Girl Scouts uniforms have green on them, but maybe making the ghoul's face another color would have helped.

2. Play-Doze: I like the artwork on the lid and the gag is pretty good. I like the simplicity of it.

3. Just For Wolfmen: Loved this one... terrific art and gag. The smaller picture of the "gray wolfman" adds a nice touch.

I'm a fan of Ghoul Scouts and Just for Wolfmen. I love the quiet menace of that little green scout and the names for the cookies on the side are very funny. The Wolfman's expression, the lighting, and the texture of the hair are all terrific.

I pitched the gag for Play-Doze and painted the final. I originally submitted the title for ANS4, in my very first batch of Topps gags, but Pay-Doh had already been accepted at the time. Dave Gross and Jeff Zapata both pitched in with ideas to make ANS7's Play-Doze better. Here are scans of the rough and the painting:

Choppertone is great – I hadn't seen it until now! The biker dude is awesome, from his glasses to his stars and stripes do-rag, and I like his expression (very important to me). It’s perfect for the scene. And your dog gives me a bit of a vintage Mack truck feel. And I like that the dog’s collar spikes match his claws.

What do you think of the new series? In other words, the artwork and the gags? Anyone have favorites yet?

Burnt Bees and Bumpkin Donuts, and Maggoty Ann are three of my favorites! Great artwork and writing all around!
My top FIVE (in order) are:

1) SEAGERM'S

2) HUNGRY-MANTIS (very Mars Attacks-esque)

3) BURNT BEE'S

4) PEEWEE'S TINY CATS

5) MOLTEN SALT

Man, I really like the rough on Ogre Eaters. The little Ogre Eaters and the expression on the Ogre's face are really reminiscent of OS Wacky type humor. The painted version loses some of the lightness of the rough, especially with the expression on the Ogre's face that looks like he really is being eaten. Kudos on the rough!

  • Sweet n' Slow (funny)
  • Crispux (bizarre gag)
  • Ogre Eaters (really bizarre gag)
  • CrimeTapp (like the gag and it's actually quite clear considering how much art there is)

Happy to oblige. Since Sweet N' Slow is also on your list, here's the art up close.I was torn between going with the goofy looking woman on Joe's sketch or going more with realism. You don't see much realism on Wacky's anymore and Norm had a great sense of when to use realism and when to get goofy. I figured this gag warranted realism. Zapata's response to this was nothing more than to say he was hoping the lady would have been silly looking. He left me wondering if I had ruined the gag. Not exactly a cheerleader, is he.

I have never been to Sturgis for the bike rally but you really should consider doing that sketch up as patches. You could make a killing selling that patch to all the bikers next summer! I was in Spearfish a couple days before the rally and there were booths setup at gas stations to sell patches and sew them on right on the spot. I have no idea what they were charging. I am sure it wasn't cheap!

Love seeing these blown up! So much detail in everyone's work! :D

(Still hoping for entire series done as 5 x 7's in parallel with regular sized -- Topps? Are you listening?!?)

The Sweet n' Slow done realistically is definitely a MUCH better choice imo. Silly would have ruined the gag -- would have taken away from the humor. The humor is in the fact that she has poured dozens of them in her cup and is still looking sweet n' innocent. Nicely done!

Love the bird hat with the $1 tag. If I remember from my childhood, that's an homage to the "sweet ol' gal" on Hee Haw? Correct?

Love the bird hat with the $1 tag. If I remember from my childhood, that's an homage to the "sweet ol' gal" on Hee Haw? Correct?
Exactly! Though I was never able to find a picture of her.

You don't see much realism on Wacky's anymore and Norm had a great sense of when to use realism and when to get goofy. I figured this gag warranted realism. Zapata's response to this was nothing more than to say he was hoping the lady would have been silly looking.

You were right to go for the realism. The lady's expression is just right. The flower designs, the bird and price tag on the hat, and the lace and pattern on the blouse are all great details.

I was thrown for a minute by the size of the teapot relative to the figure, but it needs to be that size compositionally, and hey... she's a little old lady.

I was telling Fred how much I liked the kids he included in the pencil rough.
Topps wanted it to be simpler.
I made this to see how it might have been had they let him include them in the final.
I think his original idea added alot to the overall balance of the piece.

I agree, it fills out the space much better. And the sleepy kids really drive home the gag!

I agree as well.  Right now this one is probably in my bottom 20%.  Adding the kids back in would have moved this one a lot higher on my list for ANS7 (more like top 20%).

Ditto. It's usually a bit of a struggle to squeeze a good, big character onto the open space of a package... older package designs used more blank space than today's 'fill every inch' approach and are easier to work into. The combined image you show here really looks great! ... and it still doesn't look cluttered... and you get more character. (Is that a win, win, win?)  Good design is as important as good painting and good gag writing. You proved it here.

I thought I'd cut right to reviews of some of my favorite wackys rather than trying to go one by one.

17. Kreepy Kreme
This wacky has loads of personality -- love it.  Strong simple graphic that just grabs you.  The main gag carries the wacky and having few secondary jokes really works in this case, gives the parody more oomph.  Wonderful inventiveness to have the monsters' tentacles feature round donuts as stickers and the detailing on the chocolate frosted sprinkle tentacle is outstanding.  This wacky works beautifully on all counts.

55.  Kiss Kat
I've never been a fan of the band, but this wacky rocks!  Multi-layered gag, the wafers are catnip that turns you kitten into a wild rebel -- a feline version of Gene Simmons with a rough cat tongue to match.  How on earth did the line "Your Kitty Will Lick and Purr all Night -- & Party All Day!" get through? And the art on the rocker cat, wow, I'd love to see the original painting on that.  This wackys follows the classic pattern set by Norm: stay true to the actual packaging ("claw here"), while adding a character with true eye candy appeal, all in the modern idiom.  Superb example of a wacky that doesn't fall prey to nostalgia, but fully carries on the best of the wacky lineage.

28.  Grape Newts
Amazing artwork -- the folds on the witch's robes, her hair, her expression, the incredible expressiveness of her hands. Not classic goofiness, but I love the variety the style of this wacky brings to the set.  I also really like the color reversal, the witch with green skin against her purple garb, the newts purple skin set off with the green potion.  Best Used by Oct. 31 is a great gag, with the gleeful newt clambering out puts a visual exclamation point on it.  The problem of mixing lizards and newts has been mentioned.  While that might normally bother me, the wacky is so great I find myself happily suspending disbelief.

Plenty more wackys I love from ANS7 -- these are just some of my favs

And I had the same reaction to Dave's scans.  It's hypnotic to see the original art, thanks to you all for making the effort so we can enjoy -- keep 'em coming guys!

55.  Kiss Kat

Here's a closer look at Kiss Kat. I've been wanting to work KISS into a Wacky for a while... this one just clicked. I like that they are a pop culture icon just like Wacky's... and that they would go together just like chocolate and peanut butter (oh wait, that's the other one... never mind).

How does it work in order for the gag to be approved, did Topps need to ask KISS for approval before final art could be done?

I can't answer with first hand knowledge but my GUESS is that because it is a parody it is protected under a 'freedom of speech' thing... and at most the Topps lawyers may be asked to look at it and advise whether it could cause trouble and needs some modification or should be eliminated completely. If anything Gene Simmons should thank us for suggesting a new product and how it could be marketed with a KISS endorsement. Goes great with Cherry Dr. Pepper.

I think we're safe because the letters are really the Kit Kat letters with lightening boltish 'SS'... looks enough like the KISS logo to carry the gag, but I could argue that it doesn't use their exact logo. Of course this is the kind of thing lawyers love... as long as they have something to argue about, someone has to pay them money.

Abut ten years ago at the San Diego Con, Me, Bunk, Pound and Strephon were there promoting the Silly CDs cards.  Gene Simmons showed up in street clothes, and we gave him all the Kiss parody stuff we did in that series.  He really seemed to dig it.  So I think Kiss Kat is safe.   He's part of that generation who grew up with the early MAD comics.  So I would guess he's more open to parody than say Frank Sinatra would have been.

My favorite top 10 of this series are: (In no particular order, too hard to decide)

Just for Wolfmen - immediate reaction of "WOW" loved the gags !
Hunks - Usually do not like when a product is parodied too much, but this is cool! Would of like the other tomatoe holding the mirror like the sketch - sort of a metro man, but still very nicely done.
Burnt Bee's - nice to see a spoof of this as it has never been done before - great gags and artwork of Burt and packaging!
Pinkies - Reminicent of the Original Series. Nice
Sno-Saps - Cool
Chickless - Funny
Ghoul Scouts - Nice. Didn't hit me at first then upon further examination it is great. Love the gag's on the box side, just like O.S. days.
Kiss Kat - Very orginial
Mountain Dude - Something about that guy on the skateboard is too funny

All in all this whole series has some great work in it. A very nice balance of gag's, artwork and not too cluttery.

I really like the dorky faces on the chips, and 'Dippy Chips' is a great line!  The foil bag and crimping looks nice - I'd love to see a larger image.  What's the odd shape at the top supposed to be?

That weird shape is supposed to be an "electified chip" or something. The funny thing about the Doritos package is that they're constantly changing it. And I think they have like 80 flavors! Even while I was painting, they changed the Cool Ranch package. Originally, it was a baby blue, but then they made it darker and gave the "Blazin Buffalo & Ranch Dressing" the baby blue. Aaaghhh!

Meowsporin is a Smokin' Joe concept.

Thanks for posting the rough, Dave. I originally pitched Crimetapp for ANS5, and it was tentatively approved then, but Topps wanted some changes that we didn't sort out in time for that series. I dusted it off for ANS7 and Dave helped to make the gag make more sense.

Fred came up with this gag and I asked Jeff to paint it because I liked it so much. The sticker seems a bit faded.

You must upload a bunch of pix to pay $150 a year.

I have indeed uploaded tons of photos and videos but it's only 40 bucks a year for unlimited photos.  It's a great service.

It's actually Edmiston with a T. He's a graphic artist who works in magazines. His has that photo/ caricature style that is used in Entertainment Weekly, Time and stuff like that. I really love the Clunky piece. It's pitch perfect and really beautiful. That was by far his best one for me.

Just like the OS "Kick-a-man", shouldn't the "bite a man" have a human trying to get away in the bottle...it would make it more realistic and funny...more closely attached to the gag...I loved those in the OS..."about to be eaten" - do like the shark coming out of the bottle...
IMO

Exactly! Or is it a life-size shark and a huge bottle? We may never know.

But I do think the liquid should have been blue (deep blue-C) but I get the "blood in the water" angle, too.

That's a cool idea, though. Maybe the glow in the dark drawing could be under the main sketch and only visible when the lights are out.

I did some experimenting last year with the halloween sketch cards and tried about a dozen different pens and paint, none of which were consistent or lasted very long. Plus, they were all really expensive. But if I can find the right brand, you bet we'll do 'em!

Great stuff! 'Fraid is definitely one of my favorites, probably of the whole ANS. I just love the use of the can/nozzle as an airhorn, and the way the gag flows smoothly from that idea - very clever!

I agree that having an iris showing on Iris Stings seems to be a sine qua non.

I did some experimenting last year with the halloween sketch cards and tried about a dozen different pens and paint, none of which were consistent or lasted very long. Plus, they were all really expensive. But if I can find the right brand, you bet we'll do 'em!

In college I did quite a few glow in the dark large paintings. I'll see if I still have the paints so I can give you the brand. Obviously this was quite awhile ago. I remember I got them at Pearl Paint.

Also, look around here:

I have indeed uploaded tons of photos and videos but it's only 40 bucks a year for unlimited photos.  It's a great service.

The originals are 2076 x 1481
When I looked at what the pro version goes for it states $150.
Do you mind scanning all the backs of the cards so I can plagiarize your pictures to put in Wacky-Base....LOL
What I find the toughest when scanning a whole series like this for Wacky-Base is getting the pictures straight on the scanner. A lot of them I have to correct in PS. It's really a pain and I wish there was a better way.
Keep up the great work!

I use the pro version now because I do videos too.

It doesn't take too long to complete a 55 card set.
It took a few minutes to make a master scan of all 55 cards (7 scans of the cards @ 9up on the platen).
After the initial 9 Up scans were done, it  took less than 1 minute each to crop, straighten, color correct and USM (unsharp mask) each card so the whole process of scanning the base set took less than 1 hour & 5 minutes. To expedite the straightening, I use black construction paper attached to the underside of the lid so that when you crop a card from the master, it's easy to select and straighten the card.  I know I can reduce the time per card by 1/2 if I take the time to batch process them, but I'm happy with the current process as it allows me to back off the USM a little if I think it's better.  The hardest part is finding the time to spend an hour doing it  ;)

Next time I have a spare hour, I'll scan the backs.

I agree that having an iris showing on Iris Stings seems to be a sine qua non.
I'm often compelled to look up Latin and I didn't know that one, so I did, (the term which refers to an indispensable and essential action, condition, or ingredient - for those as clueless as I) - - - I guess I could have figured out from inference, but just had to check. We need more Latin on Wacky Packages. Is there any Latin in ANS 7? Should Latin be capitalized?

If it makes you feel any better, after I typed it, I looked it up as well to make sure it meant what I thought it did. I don't think I've ever spoken that phrase (and I may never write it again).

That's funny that you mention capitalizing "Latin". I had originally added that it looked weird to have that Latin phrase just hanging out there, and I wondered if "Latin" should be capitalized. I had also looked up other Latin phrases and was going to add a few more so "sine qua non" would just sort of blend in- like E pluribus unum, tempis fugit, ad nauseum, etcetera. I thought it would be funny to end a string of Latin phrases with ad nauseum and etcetera. But I decided it was better to censor myself. I probably should have this time, too. Ah well, the die is cast.

Thanks guys! I hadn't tried them before either until I painted Bunyuns. I bought a bag to use as reference, and they were surprisingly good. I actually craved them for a few days after and I'm tempted to by them whenever I see them now. The same thing happened with Suzy Q's and Dunkin Donuts coffee. I think I've drank it everyday since I painted Bumpkin dimwits. On that note, here's that painting. Concept by the great Neil Camera!

There was a lot of back-and-forth between Dave and I, and with Dave and Topps, in the development of Baby Battle Pop. I think the germ of the idea was Dave's. As I recall we originally talked about two babies fighting with broken baby bottles. It was Topps' notion to go with a military theme instead, and Dave came up with the camouflage flavor idea. I drew the first rough sketch (below) which was further refined by Dave, Topps, and finally by Brent in the painting.

My thumb nail had two pissed off (and injured) babies in leather jackets circling each other holding broken bottles with milk dripping off them. I was thinking West Side Story. Instead of Message In A Bottle (the real slogan) it said Massacre In A Bottle. I'll see if I can find it in case there was something else on it.

The detail on this one blows me away (pun intended). Easily one of my top 10. LOVE those tiny skulls along the top!! I totally missed them on the tiny sticker. The skull faces had to have been painted with a single hair paint brush.

The only thing that could have been improved (not that this one really needs improvement), is making the bad breath look a little transparent. Otherwise to me it seems like a big long piece of chewing gum or something.  :P  Love the foil rendering on the edges.

Wow! I didn't catch that! I was thinking Breath Savers only... but it really does work for both!

Dang, I wonder if that has ever happened before in Wacky History?

But Life Servers from the original series works the best and hard to top that one with the inmate behind bars

Yes, one of my all time favorites also. The way the "bars" of the mint separators interact with the character (having his hands wrapped around them) causing this amazing flip-flopping perspective thing. Brilliant.

I never even noticed on the Life Servers sticker you can see the inmate's clothes. It looks so shadowy until you look at the Abrams book and see the original art.

With the busy start to the new school year and my getting my wackys pretty late in the game, I haven't gotten around to posting my thoughts on the new stickers.  Thought I'd post a Top 10 list.  As usual, it's hard to pick which ten, and if I did this a week from now, there would likely be a change or two.  That being said, here's my current Top 10 (in numerical sticker order):

1.  Thing Mints - love the girl's face, the red wagon with the hand in it, and the Bride of Frankenstein profile at the top of the box.  Even though the series is heavy on monsters, this one stands out from the rest.

3.  Just For Wolfmen - probably my fave of the entire series.  Love the look on Wolfie's face!  Reminds me of Bloodweiser in that I like the gags that are actually for a product someone (or, in those two cases, some creature) would actually want to buy.  The title alone makes this one a winner.

16.  Stupid Pretzel - probably doesn't hurt that I actually eat these, but the image of the pretzel cracks me up.  The guy's face is also classic Wacky.

17.  Kreepy Kreme - Simple, but the donuts are so well-rendered that this one's a winner based on that alone.

18.  Mtn Dude - Love the cork in the can top and the look of the dude!

28.  Grape Newts - Fantastic witch!  Simple, consistent supporting gags, and a nice color scheme help.

42.  Armor Maul - Love the crazed/crazy Viking!  Another one that the supporting gags make a strong title even stronger.

43.  Log Coffin - Initially I liked Mrs Blubberworths better.  However, as I looked more closely, this one rose above the other syrup parody.  The bottle is so well-rendered and the creepy guy as well.

53.  Sno Saps - Another one that looks like it could have been done by Norm back in the day.  Classic all the way!  For some reason, the brown (not normally a color I would like) looks really sharp.  The look on the snowman's face is perfect!

55.  KissKat - Not really a Kiss fan, but I thought this one was very well done.  The look on Kitty's face is terific and the gags are excellent.

As long as I'm at it, a few other thoughts on ANS7:

*I didn't include any Wackomercials in my Top 10.  Partly that is because I didn't think the quality of the subset was as good as the regular 55 base cards.  The one exception that might have made my Top 10 would be Pre-K.   The other reason is that I don't like the idea of a 20 card subset that isn't really any different than the base 55.  The backs being different is no big thing, IMO.  I would have liked it better to have a larger base set or, better still, take the best 55 and make that the base set and leave the rest for a future Lost Wacky series.

*I don't care for the various colored borders.  That being said, I'm glad there were really only two of those.  The silvers were kind of cool.  The golds were really a non-factor given their scarcity.

*I love the cereal boxes!  I'd love to see them again some time.  Even if some of the cereal parodies from ANS were used, I'd be happy with that.

*I like having original series stickers used for the foils.  That being said, I do think this lineup wasn't exactly stellar.  Even though titles like Ratz have been used as inserts before (as clings and magnets), I'm fine with them coming back as foils.  Even better, I wish Topps would improve the quality of the foils so they would be like the vending machine wackys.

*I was glad there was just one bonus box this time.  One's enough in my opinion.

*Even though I have Jay Lynch's auto on a number of things, it seems Topps could have at least improved the odds on those.  Can't cost much for them to get Jay to sign one and it would be cool to have one with decent odds.

*Alright, enough out of me for now.

That was a fantastic analysis I agree on most points, however I did like the "Wack-O-Mercails" other than that we're in almost 100% agreement! :great:

I prefer the second image so I'm glad they turned the first one down. I just like that she's sticking her hand in the bag and get's a big painful surprise. If you look at the pic of the real bag they do not show her left arm. I hunched her back a bit and lurched her face forward. I told Jeff it was like the horse from Animal House!

The sharp artwork with vivid colors and great gags just blew me away, everybody did a great job making this a the best set of the ANS in my opinion.
To soon for me to pick a fav as i only have the bonus box so far and came up a little shy of a full set but i have more stuff on the way.
The purple wrappers are really nice and the binder is top notch as well, huge thumbs up to ALL you guys involved  :great:

Very nice. This one is high on my list for ANS7. I like how the cat has an expression on his face along the lines of: "heh, just another cat fight - but I won!" -- it's not grim or tormented. Kudos.

With the help of some others on this forum I'll be able to get a couple more of these. Really wish the blister packs were available where I live. Seems insane not to have them when they have 10,000 Pokemon blisters in every store.

I wasnt sure where to post this so here it goes. Was the bonus card that came with the ANS7 Binder (Pollygripe) originally part of the Old School Series? I ask this because it has the plain white back which I found kind of out of place as well as the copyright on the front. Maybe Dave can answer this?

Poligripe was my gag and painting, and it was always meant for ANS7. For while during the development of the set it was #3 on the checklist of the base set, but it got bumped, as sometimes happens. I'm not sure why the printing was different.

Thanks for clearing that up.  I enjoyed it alot since it seemed to fit more in with the older series.  Plus pollydent commercials seemed like they were all over the tube in the 70's.  Can't remember the last time I saw a recent ad. Regardless it came out great and is my top 5 for the Series.

Hope it becomes a regular things!  :great:

And I still wish Topps would do 5x7 versions of the cards as a separate set. I'd love that! With no subsets, just 3 per pack for $4.99 or whatever, and they include the bonus stickers. Would be great fun to simply have to build a complete set of 5x7 cards from these!

I noticed the golds have slowed down. There are only a couple of auction now and they are repeat titles. I have  a hunch that there are only a couple serious collectors for this set and probably a couple people that are waiting for cheaper prices because a couple have sold under $200. I think there has only been about 10 different titles that have shown up on ebay so far. Leslie told me that people are emailing her direct to buy their golds so there might be a lot of that going on.

WOW. Good eye. It looked so familiar but I just couldn't place it. The stays cold in milk really threw me off. I really wish there were more really cool unique sketches other than the actual wacky sticker. A few more just showed up on ebay and they are exactly like the sticker.
It seems like it's only a couple people pulling the sketches to flip on ebay. One guy even has a hot pack with a random sketch in it.

Even without the sketches being unique, I prefer the way Jay did the Old School sketches, just focusing on a character, as opposed to drawing the actual Wacky sticker.

As for pulling ANS7 sketches, I gave up on those, especially after seeing that certain people can locate the 'hot packs'.  I'll buy some more blister packs if I find them for $4, but I haven't touched a gravity feed pack since finding out about the professional pack searchers.  The odds are horrendous enough even in an unsearched box.

So talking about Target.  My local Target in Van Nuys, CA has been lacking in Wackies lately so I got excited when my son and I spotted a few of them in the card section on the top shelf.  Looking around we found at lest 40 or so packs lying about on the second shelf.  The packs definitely looked picked through and a box or gravity feed was no where in site.  Suspecting they had been visited by a Hot Pack collector we examined the packs closely and found this was true.  Now it seems to me that Hot Pack collector's have a Jedi like ability to divine which packs have the chase cards.  I've heard you can slide the rear card down, look close to the white area on back and look for the tell tale red border.  BUT once the border is seen how to determine if it's sketch/auto vs a foil card.  Well this individual took the direct approach and these packs where slit on the back, lower corner.  So more Conan then Jedi.  Has any else seen this?

My wife got this with her receipt when she shopped at Target today. I don't know if I should use it or keep it.

Wonder how much that would fetch on eBay?  I'm sure certain sellers (who shall remain un-named) would not hesitate to find out.

I haven't seen it but that's pretty bad, if you ask me.  Then again, I admit to some magnet-picking back in the day, so perhaps I can't talk.  Still, I'd be pretty upset to buy a handful of individual packs and see them all cut like this.

I can't tell; how much is the coupon worth?  I'd definitely keep it.  Any idea what she bought to trigger that coupon?

Boy I hope Gurgle hesitates before you condemn him too.

I'll have to ask her what she bought because the forum is demanding it! I'll let you know when I find out myself, but, of course, it could just be random. Maybe you have to just keeping buying things until you get one.

It could be a regional thing also.

OK, so who is going to be the first member to purchase a full gravity feed and ask for each pack to be rung up separately?

Hey, that neat coupon pays for about the half the tax on a set of 3 cereal boxes! My 2 Targets have run out of Series 7 and so far have not restocked, so it might be a challenge for me to use a Wacky coupon before December 27. I wonder if Target offers a rain check on their receipt coupons. It might be fun to ask one of their less intelligent staff, just to watch the fear in their eyes.

ArmorMaul final. A bit of a bad scan. His nose is actually magenta not that dull pink. The car is my Mini Cooper.

And the rough. I did the rough for one of the earlier ANS and I think it was never actually seen by them. The picture has the old version of the product. I had to update at the last minute when I saw they completely redesigned it.
So now that ANS7 has had it's run does Topps declare it a success? Possibly enough to warrant another series?

OK, I found out what my wife bought to trigger a Wacky Packages coupon from the register. A scarf. Everyone knows Wacky collectors have cold necks.

I think it could be just a random thing. The scarf confused the fuzzy logic and it spit out a WP coupon.

I just got one of these coupons today - although I was actually buying a few packs to go with the gravity feed I was taking that looked like it needed a new home....

I'm wondering if these coupons are being generated for credit cards that were previously used to buy ANS7 wackys from Target? Was that scarf bought with the same CC as wackys in the past?

I'm not sure what to do with the coupon. Use it, keep it, put it on ebay?

I shopped at Target last Sunday and used a credit card that I had used to buy a full ANS7 gravity feed when they first came out, so while that might be a factor, it's not a guarantee.

I'm going to go back this week and see if I get one - I think getting a Wacky coupon would be cool!  For the 50¢, I'll hold onto it.

That would make sense. The same credit card was used.

It's definitely a nice one but the ANS7 sketch prices have dropped considerably so it is surprising.  I wonder if that guy ever sold that Slaytex/Zapata sketch?  I think he had it as low as $250.00 last time I saw it!

While doing my voting last week I was looking at Seagerms, and am wondering why it says "chloroplat" instead of "chloroplast".  Am I missing a gag?  Sure wouldn't be the first time!   :-\

I just noticed in the new Non-Sport Update price-guide that they list the sketch cards as follows...........

Brent Engstrom = $310.00
Others = $100.00

I wonder who they talked to get that information.  None of the sketch cards could be bought for $100.00 and all of the 4 artists were fairly close in value, with Jeff Zapata's selling a little lower than the others.

That is very odd. I would think they would get their info from completed auctions. You also can't value a sketch by the artist only. It depends on the sketch.

I think you can safely say that Mouse Mix, Spread Bull, Yubang, Crispux and Iris Stings are John Zeleznik so those can be added to the list.

That leaves only Mrs. Blabbermouth's as the only title with a mystery painter.

That one is probably my overall favorite of the series. Love the facial expression and holding up five fingers, which is subtle and easy to miss. Also great artwork on the glass.

I agree. Great painting. It's not glass, it's plastic, and I think he captured the more subdued reflection.

Ah yes -- I am remembering back to the last time I actually had the real product, and it was glass. Seriously. That long ago...

And it was made with real butter too.  I think it started out saying "made with 2% butter" and then it changed to 1% and then any reference to butter disappeared.
We have a bottle of it in our cupboard.
