Hey all, Old School 7 will be out sometime mid to late next week. It will be same format as last time with the addition of puzzles and checklists returning.
As with last time I will be offering up a raffle for some goodies involving original art and more (more details to come next week).
This set I will have a handful of stickers based on roughs Jay and I worked on for other Old School sets that, for one reason or another, did not get used. That, and lots of cool 70s products never seen in WP form and one Jay rough from the 70s.
A spoiler image to start things off: Dippity Don't based on Dippity Do

YES!!
Soooo good!!
Dave,
Question:
Back around Old School 1, I put you in touch with the guy I knew who had the television commercial reel for the Wonder Bread Wacky Packages and at a point, you guys were going to do something with that. Recall what happened?

-
Thanks for reminding me about that. I'll find out shortly. I have been wondering about that myself recently. I know Topps owns it.

Thanks Dave for the DD spoiler. I remember my 2 cousins Debbie/Shelly using that item on their hair. Looking forward to this set. Shoe.
-
I remember my sisters using that stuff. I used to make fun of the name even back then....ha! I am soooo looking forward to this set!!!!! It's been awhile.....
-
The rendering on that jar and the green gel...perfection! Dave...are you sure you are not Norm Saunders reincarnated?
-
Looking forward to the new set! :great:
-
Yay! Looking forward to some Old School Wackys!
-
Will this be a Topps On Demand exclusive?
-
I see that with the recent On Demand Stranger Kids GPK release has a nice, long 90 day availability.
Pat and others have brought this up before, but it really seems like a month or two long window could be done with OLDS 7 as well.
they could have two listings:
one is for basic set of stickers + checklist cards, with no sketches or chase cards.
the other listing for the limited number of full-blown sets with the sketches, etc., just like last year, and when those are sold out, they are gone.
Topps already does this for the baseball team sets, where there are always two options: one is a basic team set and the other includes an autograph card. Both have long duration sell windows, and of course the autographed versions can and do sell out before the clock is up, but the basic set runs for a long time.
-
Like you did for Wacky Packages Old School 6 last year prior to the release, will you show us a list of the products being spoofed in Wacky Packages Old School 7?
-

Yeah, I'd like to see that.
-
I'll give you a group of products each day:
Dippity Do
Dove Soap
Joan of Arc Beans
Bounce Fabric Softener
Hot Tamales
Heath Bar
-
I had to look up Joan of Arc beans, never heard of that one. look forward to seeing them!!!

That's one of the ones that Jay did the rough for.

Some more products:
Shogun Warriors
Old Gold Cigarettes
Good Housekeeping Magazine
Coors Beer
Whisker Lickins'
Giggles & Grins & Similes & Laughs Cereal

Yes, this is an On Demand set
-
Some more products:
Shogun Warriors
Old Gold Cigarettes
Good Housekeeping Magazine
Coors Beer
Whisker Lickins'
Giggles & Grins & Similes & Laughs Cereal
Well, it's good to see that Grins & Smiles & Giggles & Laughs finally made it, as promised in the OLDS 6 spoilers post. That makes all three of the major Ralston cereals done as Wackys (the other two were Freakies and Moonstones).
I take it that there'll be 30 stickers in this series, as usual, that it'll be released in this month (i.e., November) and that it'll have only puzzles and checklists, but no subsets, packs, wrappers and/or boxes (meaning that it'll be released in a plastic box again)? Also, will the stickers be die-cut this time? Details, please, details!
-
I'll give you a group of products each day:
Dippity Do
Dove Soap
Joan of Arc Beans
Bounce Fabric Softener
Hot Tamales
Heath Bar
I presume that Dove will be Glove, based on one of Jay Lynch's color roughs that I saw on lostwackys.com? If so, then that's one Note that Patrick can remove from the Spreadsheet.
-
Shogun Warriors
Alright, I've heard of them, they were recalled before the 70s were over. Someone merged them with Regular Show once.
-
Like Wacky Packages Old School 6 had a Peanuts/Charlie Brown/Snoopy related Wacky (Scoopy Sno-Crush Machine which spoofs Snoopy Sno-Cone Machine), will there be another Peanuts related old school wacky in Old School 7?
-

Yes, 30 cards, exact same format as the previous Old School with the only change being Checklists and Puzzles pieces will be added to the backs of the rough cards. So, not the exact same puzzle/ checklist format but they are there. There will be a Topps product as the puzzle. Same price, three sketch cards, Ludlow, tan and white variations. I tried asking for a header sticker (an Old School "wrapper" card to sit on the top of the stack) but not sure that made it this time around. I will also have the same contest deal for people that buy three and show me the receipt.
-

No, it's not Glove. It's a gag Jay did for me during Old School 3 that we previously did not use. I used a few recent Jay Old School gags (saved some others for a possible Old School 8. I did use a Jay gag from the 70s though and plan to use some others down the line.

Sorry, no Peanuts gags this time around

I know that I shouldn't expect too much, but is McCormick going to be McSnoremick?
Oh, by the way, you misspelled "cereal" the second time.
Finally, just what are Space Food Sticks? Never heard of them.
-
For anyone, like me, unfamiliar with Baron VonRedberry or Sir Grapefellow cereals...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cutRNspwLtY
Oh, I remember them! In fact, they were just two of the many cereals that I remember fondly-and that I ate!
Strange, though, that the Monster Cereals never had a grape-flavored cereal. After all, in 2013 Fruit Brute was changed to cherry and Fruity Yummy Mummy was changed to orange-cream.
-
Oh, by the way, you misspelled "cereal" the second time.
If he does it again, we'll know he's a serial misspeller.
-
Oh boy!! I've been wanting Wackys for Underoos, and especially Space Food Sticks!
Space Food Sticks is a Jay Lynch rough and Underoos came from Paul Harris

Yep, that is the 70s Jay gag I used.
Space Food Sticks is a weird product that came out during the space race in the late 60s and continued through the mid 70s. It's shaped like a slim jim and is a protein stick or something like that. The box is great. It's almost all text. Jay wrote an amazing gag for it.

Not sure. It might be tomorrow or Thursday as that was the last I had heard. That could have changed. I'll LYK when I find out for sure.
-
even posted on the rarely used Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/WackyPackages/

Looking forward to this set and particularly happy to see Grapefellow and Redberry made it! I'm also glad to see that the puzzle is returning! The closer we get to the original series (or, even better, to the first Old School series) the better. To be honest, I'm not thrilled with various back colors, I just want as much Dave Gross quality Wacky nostalgia as possible, so I may stick with the basic set and buy 2 or 3.
-

Will we get two options again?: a $150 full set plus other cards option and $50 partial set option. Please advise. Thanks

so I may stick with the basic set and buy 2 or 3.
Bless you, brother, if you can drop $300-$450 on these. Just one set for me, thanks. :o

I was hoping for a Doo Dads parody. Maybe next time? Unless Nabisco products are on the no-spoof list.

Maybe Wacky Packages Old School 8 will have a Nabisco Doo Dads spoof.

Funny, I've been digging around in my basement lately, and just before Halloween I came across some Ben Cooper Star Trek Costumes.

If you look at post #787 in the Master Spreadsheet section, you'll see that Nabisco may have been on the C & D list a long time ago in the 1970s, but it sure isn't now, that's for sure.
-
Bless you, brother, if you can drop $300-$450 on these. Just one set for me, thanks. :o
No, I'm just planning to buy 2 or 3 of the $50 sets. I can't afford the $300-450. Wish I could. I'll see about picking up a sketch card I like on ebay once the frenzy dies down.

If you're considering 2 or 3 of the $50 sets, why not just buy the $150 package, which guarantees you a complete set, plus extras to trade or sell?

Waiting for this set with baited breath. Looks like another winner! :great:

These things really weren't very good. They tasted like flavored sawdust with the texture of Play-Dough. But, as kids, we HAD to have them because... Space and NASA and Apollo missions!

I also just HAD to have Space Food Sticks, for the reasons you mention. But, I recall liking them (at least the chocolate ones).

Fizzies were tablets you would put in water (and some people put them in milk....ughh) to make it into a flavored "carbonated" beverage. If I remember correctly, it was made by the same company that made either Bromo Seltzer or Alka-Seltzer. Goober Grape was a peanut butter and jelly mixture.
-

I also remember chocolate, and peanut butter, being the less offensive. But if I had to pay for them with my own money... no way.

Then Goober Grape was similar to Koogle (which was done in OLDS 1 as Kookle), right? Just made by a different company?
-
They still make Goober Grape. I thought that one would be pretty well known.

No, I don't think so. Jason would know more about that.

How can anyone legally protest parody stickers? I mean, I understand why Topps doesn't parody Disney, and it's not for legal reasons, it's because they don't wan't to lose their Disney licenses like Star Wars. But parody is protected under the law.

If you're considering 2 or 3 of the $50 sets, why not just buy the $150 package, which guarantees you a complete set, plus extras to trade or sell?
Good question! I probably should have said two sets. My reasoning is that I really have no interest in the various backs at all. Which meant (when I ordered the $150 set last time), I only had three sketches for the extra $100. And, quite honestly, I didn't really even like all that much any of the three sketches I got. As I recall, I traded all the extras for a complete set, thereby essentially wasting $50. I did get the chance at getting some awesome sketch cards but it just didn't pan out that way. Dave does amazing work, I love the retro products, and I want to support the cause. But paying an extra $100 for questionable benefit doesn't compute for me. There would simply have to be more to that extra $100 than what we currently get (unless the quality of the sketch cards improved a fair amount. But, who knows, maybe I just got a bad batch last time. Or maybe I'm getting spoiled).

My mother used to put them in my lunchbox sometimes, so it wasn't my money. Speaking of lunchboxes, every fall when we went back-to-school shopping, I kept hoping for a Wacky Packages lunchbox :^)

Nice Heath bar spoof, mr. Gross. Can't wait to see the rest.

While Doo Dads could be a Wacky Packages Old School 8 contender for 2019-2020, here are some other 1970's products that could be spoofed for a possible Wacky Packages Old School 8:
Hush Puppies shoes
Jubillie Kitchen Wax
Kenner Sit 'n Spin toy
Frostie Root Beer
Kenner Snoopy Pencil Sharpener
Kellogg's Country Morning cereal
Munch candy bar
Aqua-Filter
Bugs Bunny Vitamins

One question: are the cards die-cut or not?

One question: are the cards die-cut or not?
I did not ask but I highly doubt it. They said everything was the same as last year's set other than having the puzzle/ checklists come back
-
Thanks again for another nice set, Dave.
-
Good gawddam... are they asking $150 for a 30 sticker set?!?
Wow. That's balls. And I LOVE these.
-
No, I don't think so. Jason would know more about that.
Koogle was produced by Kraft from about 1974-1977 or so.
Goober Grape and Koogle really aren't that similar at all. Goober Grape (and other Goober varieties) were and are peanut butter and jellys swirled together (but not mixed) like AquaFresh! Koogle was a "peanut spread" but tasted nothing like peanuts. It had a similar texture to a smooth peanut butter but came in four flavors: Banana, Chocolate, Cinnamon and Vanilla. My brother has three of the four jars on display in his office. They're snazzy!

Ah yes, that's the scan I posted of my original newspaper ad for the brand back in 2009 (it's a bit off-register, but still cool). You can see my original posting of that here:

Someone fill in my memory if you don’t mind: was the last Old School set $150 for the 30 sticker set? Thought the last set of 30 was $50 and was stretching reasonable value at that. I cannot fathom this.

Thanks. I put the information on OLDS 7 on the Wacky Packages Wikipedia page and I wanted to make sure that I got everything right.

Wait, you've got it all wrong, Patrick. I just updated the Wikipedia page by putting in the general information on the current release, not a checklist. Look up the page and see for yourself.

Patrick's point was that you wrote "OLDS 8" in your post, when you meant 7....right? :-[

Yes, these are the exact same prices and set up as the last set with the only change being puzzles and checklists are on the other side of the rough cards. They sold almost no $50 offers last year. I was surprised that was even going to be an option this year. The set sold out on day 3 of a 7 day sale.
The set for $150 is all 30 cards plus 3 sketch cards plus a big amount of Ludlows, tans and rough cards as well. So not just the 30 cards.

Noted and fixed. Did not even see that until now. Totally went over my head. Thanks.

Is it a nine-piece puzzle checklist, or checklists and puzzle pieces done separately? And are there both black and red Ludlows as well, or just black ones?

Dave said that the puzzle pieces and checklists are on the backs of the rough cards. As for ludlows, last time there were both red and black, so presumably there will be both this time.

Topps would be be well served to at least mention on their site that this release contain puzzle and checklist cards. That would help sales.

I thought it was more like $50 per box.

What does the Underoos spoof look like if it spoofs a superhero or cartoon character?

The only way to get them to lower the price is to not buy it. Then you risk Topps just pulling the plug on Wackys altogether.
I'm surprised by the $50 set too. I don't know who would only want 10 cards from the base set, and buying 3 doesn't guarantee that you'd get 30 different. I suppose it's to fill the void when the $150 sells out -- if it does.
-
I'm shocked how low last year's Old School sets are selling on eBay. I've seen base sets, even complete black Ludlow sets sell for under $50 over the last few months. I consider myself fortunate to have been able to get a complete Pencil Art set for $45 recently. So if you needed to spend $150 last year to get one base set, a few sellers took a huge loss or waited too long to sell them. Maybe they made up for it by selling their sketch cards, tan backs or red Ludlows early on?

Yep, the only way there will be more Old School (and any other WP online/ On Demand sets) is if this sells out (or gets close to it I suppose). Yeah, I don;t get the $50 option at all.
-
A while back during the popularity of Wacky packages all new series 3, I noticed you did a rough spoof of the board game "Clue", called Glue. Out of curiosity, is that the same Clue parody in the new 7th Old School series?

Yes, reworked to a 1970s version of the game. This painting was around the longest amount of work I ever did on a painting.

That's sad and scary if these don't sell. Not too many Wacky Packages fans out there like there used to be I guess. Old School is the closest thing we have today to the quality of vintage Wacky Packages.

Yes, things are pretty tight concerning Wacky Packages. Anything they put out needs to sell well to keep things going. There are some other things in the works that look good though. As long as it's cool ideas I think they will sell. They need to avoid the award show stuff and things like that that didn't have much appeal.
-
I know it’s been mentioned before but the wacky Packages/Mars attacks crossover cards seem to do really well. Really would be fun to take the original 16 series and give each card the Mars attacks twist. Would probably sell really well. Create a 9 card puzzle/checklist and forget about variants.
-
I think I'm losing it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought for OLDS6 there was a $50 option that included only the 30 sticker set (no ludlows, roughs, or sketches) and the $150 option that included the set along with luds, roughs, and 3 sketches. But for OLDS7 the $50 option is basically just 1/3 of the $150 option. Who would even want that? Am I misremembering what was offered for OLDS6?

the $50 option is exactly the same as last time - simply 1/3 of the Deluxe set.
they really should be selling a set option like you indicate, just the base 30 card set, and somehow get the puzzle and checklist in with it.
they do this for the baseball team sets all the time. A no-frills team set, and a deluxe version with autographs.

Also that WP/Mars Attacks Set was one of the highest non-sports in demand sets. Hopefully it will be bigger this time! :)

Thanks! Must have been wishful thinking on my part that there was a $50, no-frills set last time. Maybe I was thinking of what the going rate seemed to be on ebay for such a no-frills set.

I hope there is sketch cards for attacky Packages! I want in!

Ah....$50 for the base 30 sticker (they are still stickers, right?) set on eBay must be what I'm remembering. That's the only stuff I'm interested in, don't care about chase cards or autographs or sketches really, so I guess I will wait for the secondary market.
A damned shame that Topps doesn't offer that 30 sticker set, although I suppose it would cut into and cannibalize their $150 chase-card-package option if they did.
It's hard to fathom how we went from $50 boxes stuffed with so many many beautiful die-cut stickers (and fun bonuses), to $150 for a single set of 30 not-die-cut stickers in the span of a few years. Unless Topps lost tens of thousands of dollars on the first handful of Old School series? But weren't they breaking even? Other than that, this just seems to be project managers chasing bad ideas while changing the product to meet artificial demand (sketches and the ridiculous sketch card boom) and turning something that seemed to be working into something that is near-failing. Bad design and execution chasing bad ideas. It's a shame.
I LOVE Dave's work on Old School, but I loved the Wacky Packages Old School product completely when it was Old School. If it weren't for Dave's continued exceptional work on the series, I'd see little point going forward. What they've designed around that work is so far from the core appeal (to me) and so built upon the chase of the chase (the very opposite of the foundational Old School concept) that it is no wonder it's become lean.
But, maybe that's all the collectible card hobby has going for it, at this point. At least the stickers (or sticker-like-cards) are still stunning. I'll keep around for those.
-
You are remembering that base sets of OS 6 cost about $50 on Ebay. I know because I purchased two $150 sets last time to get all the roughs and sold my extra base set on the bay. Now that the roughs include a subset with puzzle backs ; a lot of people will be looking for a 30 card base set as well as the rough subset with puzzle and checklist. I can't understand why they did not mention the puzzle backs and checklist on the roughs in the web listing. That needs to be corrected so people understand what they are getting.
I agree, base sets were going for about that much on ebay. I sold a few sets here for less, and will be able to help forum friends again.
I also think that Topps was foolish to not include a note about the addition of puzzle and checklist backs on the roughs in the item descriptions - that might have prompted people to buy an extra $150 set to get all the roughs. Who wants a partial puzzle??
Another option for people who just want a base set is to buy the $150 set and sell off the extras.
-
Is there a count of how many sets are being offered?
Also would be nice to have a counter to display how many sets are left on the website.
I think we had that last year and it was fun to watch it sell out.
-

There were 400 sets for Old School 6. I was curious and looked this morning to see how many Old School 7 sets might be left, but they set a limit of 20 sets, so I couldn't tell.

I can't wait to see what turns out on this one! According to my 5-27-18 post (reply #89) on the third page of the section on Attacky Packages, 47 Mars Attacks Attacky Packages have been made so far. That's four sets of 10 and seven extras. If three more are made, that'll be 50-five sets of 10. That's a great number for a whole series, I think...although Topps will probably want to make it 55.
And, of course, that's not counting the eight Dinosaurs Attack! Attacky Packages and the four Mars Attacks/Judge Dredd Attacky Packages listed on the same post.
-

I appreciate the generosity, but I'm at a loss how someone can buy a $150 set and sell the base set for only $50. Are the bonus Ludlows, roughs and sketch cards valued at 2/3 the cost? I think I bought a base set on eBay last year for $50, but like others here, I thought the price went up this year, so I bought the deluxe set. Maybe I should have waited, but I guess I can recoup some of the money I spent by selling the extra stuff on eBay.

Oh, I like this! I used to wear those Superman Underoos when I was 4 or 5 years old. Heh. They did a re-release of them in adult sizes a couple years ago.
Why did this set have to come out Black Friday weekend? I'm so broke. It doesn't help that I bought a bunch of Wacky sketches on Ebay this week either.

Selling the base set for $50 is market price. Some buyers spend $150 in the hopes of pulling a few sweet sketches that can sell for $100 - $150 on their own.
The back variants have a decent resale value; but sketches are where the resale value can be great. Pull mediocre sketches and you will lose on your investment.
It's a gamble when it comes to reselling. Dealers that buy multiple $150 sets are playing the odds that they will pull enough good sketches to make a nice profit on their outlay.
-
I'll be talking to Topps about the sketch problem. They need to A) give people two full months (at least) on sketches and B) eliminate some of the sketch people that consistently are not putting out quality sketches. Time for a culling.

Had to shell out $$$$ earlier this month for health insurance deductibles for my son, so I am super-broke right now.

Pardon my ignorance (and shame on you, Topps, for not spelling this out better on your website), but if the puzzle pieces are on the back of the roughs, the numbers don't quite line up, right? I mean, there are 9 pieces to a puzzle but 30 roughs in a set. Does that just mean, from a complete set of roughs, that one could make 3 and 1/3 puzzles? If I do buy a $150 set, will I even be guaranteed a full 9 piece puzzle?
-

I was wondering the same. I guess time will tell.

Maybe there are no puzzles.. >:D

And checklists.
My guess, three 9-piece puzzles + three checklists = 30 cards
So if you buy the deluxe set, you'll get all that.
And if you buy the 1/3 set, hopefully you get 1 puzzle and 1 checklist. (10 cards)

I'm hoping for what you guessed, but if you buy just one deluxe set at $150 you only get 15 roughs. Hopefully that will include a full puzzle, at least one checklist, and 5 extras. I see trading ahead!!

Thanks! I love doing Old School stuff. I barely slept the entire time working on them because I wanted them as detailed up as possible.
That is a good suggestion! I will ask about posters.
-
I honestly have no idea about the puzzles/ checklist other than I was told they would be sharing space with the rough cards and they asked me what the puzzle should be and I told them it had to be Unwanted Stickers since that is the Topps products. Failtastic Clod Rods if there was an additional puzzle but I suspect it will be one.
Remember, if you bought three deluxe options to LMK so you can be added to the raffle. I will be giving away a painting and some roughs (possibly something else)

Last time they came close, but we had a lot of "A" and "B" rough groups that varied by a card or two - I still have 6 stray cards left, and two are the same number (P2). And, it was easy to tell because the roughs had numbers on the backs (I kept getting P2, forget which I was shorted on). If we want numbers to make trading easier this time, we'll have to "number" these ourselves based on the checklist. That makes posting needs and extras lists a lot easier than typing titles in random orders......... Otherwise, maybe we can go in alphabetical order.

You're right. Lots of trading going on last time, which wasn't a bad thing, IMO. I rather liked getting to know some new folks that way.

It's too bad that when you buy the $150 option you are not ensured a full puzzle and checklist with your base set. I think since you are getting half of the 30 pencil roughs; they could not have a and b sets with full puzzle/ checklist since few people would buy the other set if they were listed that way. They would sell out of the sets that included puzzles and get stuck with the sets that did not.

Sales stop before we even get our sets, so thankfully we have here for trading. Hopefully they will break up the roughs as discussed earlier so a $150 set will include a full puzzle and a checklist. If not, perhaps trading here will help without costing people Ebay fees.

Ooh, puzzles and checklists are now on the backs of cards again! Yipee!
It's like All New Old School Series!
Keep on cutting corners, Topps!

I was able to procure a $150 set via my grandparents as a Christmas gift.
I would like to trade all of my ludlows to simply complete the pencil set. Not sure anyone on here would like to do that though, unless the stars align.
We will see.

Good for you, and Merry Early Christmas!! Check back when we have all received our sets, and then we'll all know what we have to trade. Hopefully Topps will do a good job with "A" and "B" sets of the roughs, and someone will end up with exactly the 15 you need.

Many of the OS7 products here I barely remember, let alone remember at all. It seems that with each new old school series, the pickins are becoming slimmer than before in terms of familiarity. This is not to impugn the artwork and/or gags; They remain top-notch.
With this in mind, I hope OS7 sells well enough that Topps gives the green light for another series. This time, however, I hope they give Dave free rein to develop the vintage old school series (circa 1930) that he has mentioned before, one in which very iconic products and characters (such as Mr. Peanut - who is familiar to everybody) are given the Wacky treatment. For whatever reason, Space Food Sticks did not take up residence in my kitchen cabinet. (Or if it did, it was very short-lived.) Sailor Jack and Bingo, however, were always a welcomed sight, and it would be extremely pleasant to revisit these "old friends" again in an upcoming series. Here's hoping...

Agree with this sentiment. Could be a regional thing, or maybe a broader spectrum of products that we don’t remember from back then, but for me there have been a few unfamiliar products throughout OLDS, more so in this series. It’s almost like looking at the Irish Wackys - very well rendered but completely unfamiliar. While I still find it all fascinating, I hate to think of all the great kiddie product choices that will fall by the wayside should the OLDS run end anytime soon. Repeat parodies of awesome package designs parodied in OS also holds potential.
-
Speaking of products that we'd like to see parodied - I'd like to see Yummy Mummy. I believe every other Halloween cereal character has been done.
I was actually thinking of making a parody of Yummy Mummy like, say, Crummy Mummy. Just never got around to it.

Remember, you are also looking back on WP with rose colored glasses. I guarantee a ton of the OS series you have or had no idea what the product was. Especially as a kid. You only know them now because of the OS series. I thought the majority of these were really common things and if not they were still highlights of many 70s nostalgia sites. I try to check through those when doing these to get good ideas. A lot of these products are still in use today. The only one I never saw was Joan of Arc Beans (which is still around). I used it because Jay did a nice rough for it and it was a staple for him in the 70s. Chocks was the other one I was vaguely familiar with but it was a pretty big vitamin brand. What here have you never seen?

IIRC, that's what happened to the OS run. The products were becoming too obscure in the later series and, from what I remember, that was one of the reasons for the decline in the 1970s. This was, of course, mostly due to the C&D problem.

I really like Corpse with the old pull tab on top. Well done. I think my fav so far has to be McSnoremick. Great detail on the can, and a simple, funny Wacky. I think this one perfectly captures the Old School theme. I much prefer the simple gags and art to those that are too busy.

Dummy Mummy was done in one of the Halloween Packs 'O Fun (that doesn't mean it couldn't be done again, though) and a non-Topps parody series might've done "Scummy Yummy Mummy". I'll check up on that one.
UPDATE: I found it! It's in lostwackys.com under the section "Non-Wackys" and in the subsection "1997 Freakie Magnets".

You're right, Mark. The OLDS run has already done the four versions from the 1970s, the ANS run has done three different versions of the three that are still around, each in three separate series, and one of the Postcards series did all three of them in it as well. In fact, Franken Berry has been done several times-more than any of the others. I guess it must be the most popular of the three.

Dave you make a good point, and yes, it did cross my mind that the OS had its share of out-of-leftfield products, but it still feels like a very small fraction compare to the Old School now. I guess I’m just applying a slightly warped or biased standard now. The last batch of spoiler images rings much more familiar. All in all looks like another outstanding set. The Hot Tamales parody speaks more to my internal wishlist, but I understand, you have to have some balance between grocery, sundry items, kiddie stuff, etc.
To mikecho’s comment about Old School possibly following the trend of later OS Series in terms of having to go more and more obscure with the product types, I’m not sure if I agree with that, because OS was pushed in that direction due to parent companies issuing C&D requests, which wiped out entire swaths of products from consideration, but I think that’s all off the table now. Don’t know for sure though; seems Topps has steadfastly kept silent on the whole C&D issue since ANS started in 2004. My guess is that Topps lawyers successfully got this matter ruled on in their favor in the courts before proceeding with anything.
-
OS6 spoofed Aurora's Frankenstien kit and OS7 spoofed Aurora's Dracula kit. Will OS8 next year or so spoof the Aurora Wolfman kit and/or Aurora Mummy kit?

You're right; I completely forgot about the C&D problem. I should've mentioned that when I made my statement. In fact, I just fixed that right now.
UPDATE: I just checked up on something that I remembered from lostwackys.com (which means, from what I've seen and heard about that website so far, it should be taken with more than a shakerful of salt).
Anyway, in the Lost Wackys section on the website under the listing for ANS1, 3 Racketeers was intended to be #55 in that series, but was dropped before final production due to a complaint from M&M/Mars. As we all know, it was then replaced by Snots.
-
The C&D is no problem anymore. We only really had a few minor issues since ANS started up.
I think I still have a lot of good products left. A few of the categories are thinner than others. I guess I can always do more toys/ candy/ cereal rather than pull a more obscure medicine product for instance. I just always like to mix up the categories.
-

I also have some more OLDS roughs Jay did that we hadn't used and will do some more of Jay's 70s roughs.

They are all posted on page 3 of the thread
-
Sorry, guess I wasn’t keeping up with this thread as well as I thought!
Also, kudos for continuing with the Aurora model kits. Not only do I love complementary Wackys all belonging to a family of products, like Hostess for example, but this plays beautifully to the spirit of monster-themed Wackys. And no need to embellish with a monster character - they’re already there in the product! I like to think of them as the perfect marriage between Wackys and You’ll Die Laughing / Creature Feature.
-
The famous line from the movie Drunkula:
"I always drink...(hic)vine...(hic)".
And the Count doing a commercial:
"I'll drink no vine before its time...it's T-I-I-ME!" (swallows a glass of wine in one gulp)
"M-m-m-m-boy, that's good booze! (hic)" (voice being a cross between Bela Lugosi and Jackie Gleason (and if you can imagine that, you can imagine anything))

There were some great toys back then! And we might be more likely to remember toys and candy because most of us were kids when we were infected with Wacky-itis :P
You've done some pretty iconic toy parodies in Old School, and I've liked them all. I'd love to see some more - have Sizzlers or Verti-Bird been done yet? My apologies if I've forgotten.

Wow Slim jim this new batch of old school cards is great! Favorites to early to say but Dead berry, Chunks, Corpse, Shot, Sir ape, and Old Gods look like winners. I hope I can scrape up the150 set!

Dave, you do a great job on these OLDS projects. I think they're great. I really feel like you're the "keeper of the flame" in many ways (especially for us Old Heads!)
Do I recognize EVERY single product? No. Did I recognize every product in the Original Series when I was kid in the 70's? No. That didn't make me like those Wackys any less then and certainly doesn't now either.
I guess what I'm saying is: these Wackys are great and I can't wait to get my hands on them!
Keep up the good work Dave :great:

I have never seen or remember the following in my house when I was a kid:
Baron Von Redberry
Chocks
Dippity-Do
Fizzies
Goober Grape
Grins & Smiles
Joan of Arc Beans
Old Gold
Shogun
Sir Grapefellow
Space Food Sticks
Superman Underoos
Wanted Stickers
That is irrelevant, however. The main gist of my post was to push for the old school 1930s set with iconic characters, albeit vintage. I think it's a clever and fabulous idea that you had, Dave, and it would be nice to see such a set surface between now and next autumn. Or maybe I'm in the minority, here.
-
I remember puking up a bowl of Grins smiles giggles and laughs when i was about 7. My Vomit had happy faces in it.
-
I have never seen or remember the following in my house when I was a kid:
Superman Underoos
You have no knowledge of, or experiences with, Superman Underoos?!?!? You poor, deprived child. It's a miracle that you survived into adulthood!! :P

I also have some more OLDS roughs Jay did that we hadn't used and will do some more of Jay's 70s roughs.
I'm glad to hear what you've said here on both counts, Dave. I believe there were 13 Aurora monster models and I bet I had all of them at one time or another. That great James Bama art is wonderful in its own right and does indeed lend itself well to Wacky-ization.
And any time Jay's work can be used is a plus in my book.
I'm not sure I'm recommending this (in fact, I'm probably not), but the idea of parodying comics is somewhat intriguing to me. I mean, Wackys didn't do that back in the 70s, though they did satirize magazines. And ANS had a couple comic parodies, so I don't think it would be too far afield to do a couple 70's classic comics in a future OLDS set.

You automatically see your post after you post it, so it is no longer new to you. So, no, can't fix what isn't broken.

I have seen it, Pat, and I loved the idea. However, I was quite disappointed by the quality of it. I bought a set years ago but never even bothered putting it in sheets. Great idea, but just not great execution.

Not sure if it sold out or not. Doesn't have to to have been successful though. They upped the sketch amount a bit this year so there was more to sell. If it had any problem this time around it's due to not getting some of the better sketch card artists on the project. That will be corrected next time if we do it again. Only the best ones will be on it. I'll also do sketch cards if they give me good time for the paintings.
-
It would be a blast to be in the room and watch Dave lay down a painting on canvas from start to finish, especially one of the more challenging ones, like the glass bottle work on Chunks. Would sure beat watching that Bob Ross and his big Afro talking about the “happy little trees.” 😂😂😂

Second that. The awesome cartoonish appearance of those packages that already have silly characters adds up to a product group just screaming to be parodied.
Also, love the bullet-riddled concept of Shot Tamales - falls right in with the handful of OS titles done similarly, some of my all-time faves - Shots Candy, ShotTissue, Graft Cheese, etc. Keep em coming!

I was out of town for the big sale and missed it. Hope to get a base set in the secondary market. I have yet to see any sets hit ebay. I would be willing to pay up to $10 for the Evil Knievel Sticker. By far my favorite toy as a kid. Anyone have any extras for sale. Thanks.

that was as Coorspe Light, with two o's, so technically no?

Getting married this weekend...
Congratulations! Here's to a long and happy union!

I already noted this on page 6, reply #204.
And Patrick, it's "Coorpse Light".

Do we think we will see these cards shipped by Fri? That would be 13 business days from sale's end. The site states they will ship 15 days from sale end.

seriously doubt it. seems like most of their items ship late.
For fun, ask any of the GPK crowd about the recent Meme Set.
That one was supposed to ship within 10-12 days after its countdown clock ended - which was back on October 4th.
Most of the buyers are still waiting for them to ship.
-
Asking again here. I have moved and need to change the shipping address on my OS7 set.
I ordered the set as a guest via paypal so I didn't have an account and don't know how to access the order details on the Topps web page to change.
Can someone please give me a phone number to call to talk to Topps? They haven't answered my support ticket.

Maybe a dumb question, but have you set up mail forwarding through the Post Office? Topps's Customer Service number is 1-800-489-9149
-
My order is still 'processing'.
They can TAKE an order they just can't FULFILL it... ;)
-
Do we think we will see these cards shipped by Fri?
That would surprise me. I'm thinking more like middle of next week (12/19 or so).
-
In time for Christmas? I hope so ! I bought 12 sets as gifts.

Thanks I talked to Customer Service and they were very helpful. I didn't want to change my address with the post office yet, because I was concerned they might lose the order. I've had problems before after moving. Anyway Topps has changed the order to my new address. Very nice lady I spoke to.
-

My thoughts too. If you've put in a COA with USPS, all of your mail (with the exception of 4th class junk mail) will be forwarded to your new address for one year.
-

Ha! Reminds me of the Seinfeld episode with the rental car. "You know how to TAKE the reservation, but you don't know how to KEEP the reservation."

I guess you don't live in West Virginia :] Never trust them here with COA especially my OLDS7 set. 8)
Anyway Topps changed the shipping address for me. "Now" I will put in my COA. :]

Sorry this got delayed. I'll have the raffle tonight at 7est. It will be on FB and I'll post the results here right after it. 13 people are in the raffle. Grand prize is the art to Philthies Corona, 2nd and 3rd are the roughs to Unwanted Stickers and Ben Creeper.
-
Remember, you are also looking back on WP with rose colored glasses.
Dave I meant to ask earlier - do you consistently get actual vintage packages to work from, or are you often limited to internet images, magazine ads and such? The finished paintings look like you had the packaging in hand, no suggestion you’re working with anything less. If you’re not, I imagine finishing off the side panel details on boxes must add some challenge, depending on the perspective of the image you’re working with.

No, I use old ads and photos for all the work. I've been able to find multiple views to get sides and tops. Also I use YouTube and look at old commercials.

Winners in the WP old School 7 raffle are:
Jaron James - Philthies Cigars painting
Paul Harris - Squirrel Gut Zippers rough
Marc Simon - Unwanted Stickers rough
Charles Geller - Ben Creeper rough
I'm going to send the remaining 9 people a little something as well.
Thanks to everyone that participated. Hope to do it again with another Old School set next year!

Drats! Congrats to the winners and I do appreciate the opportunity. Those cigars look real enough to smoke! Maybe next time around...

To date, is Disney the only company that has a C&D on Topps to make Wacky Packages spoofing Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars characters? That's what caused Topps to cancel a planned Star Wars Wacky Packages series in 2014.
-
Dave, I'd like to ask you a question.
What's the date of release for OLDS 1 and OLDS 2? I'd like to put this information in the Wikipedia Wacky Packages article and I figured when in doubt, go to an expert-or, in this case, the original creator of the concept.
I know that OLDS 1 came out in February 2010 and that OLDS 2 came out in late March 2011. All that I need is the dates of the months. If you could please tell me what they are, that would be great! Then I can edit them into the Old School section of the article. Thanks!

Hey, I went back into my emails but they only are going back to 2012 at this point so i'm not 100% sure on that. If anyone has access to the other WP Forum fif you find the original threads for the releases you should be able to get the exact dates.
-
If anyone is interested in some paintings for the new set I have the following left:
Chunks
Dippity-Don't
Teeth
Ben Creeper
Good Housecreeping
Smirkoff
Dolt Soap
Old Golds
Whiskey Lickins
Spacey Food Sticks
Philthies Corona
Just send me a PM!

I would love to have them by Christmas Eve, but I'm not counting on it.

I ordered a few of the Red Sox World Series on Demand sets back in October, just got them
the other day. Although they still are technically on sale....
Yes, not the most efficient customer service around. I do think they are willing to help
and are trying, they just have the worst communication skills or the most ancient
computer system around.

Received the similar 'shipping label has been created' notice.
Another day probably before they actually ship

What do you think - maybe by Christmas Eve?

Anyone going to have an extra base set for sale?
I couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger on the deluxe set when I was only after the base whites...

There are some Ebay sellers that have purchased these cards and will be selling sets on the bay at reasonable buy it now prices once they are in their hands.
-
Argh! Got my shipping confirmation and it has my old address on it. WTH? >( I talked to Topps directly and she said she changed the address for me to my new house.
Oh well, I have my COA in for USPS so it should get here either way. I'll be on pins and needles until it does! :] C'Mon Topps.
-
I, too, got a shipping notice. Couldn't actually tell who it came from or what it was for but, figured it was from Topp's.
-
This looks like another great set. I probably missed it somewhere on this thread, but where can this set be purchased? Thanks. Jeff

At the moment, nowhere. It was on the Topps On Demand site, and it won't hit eBay until those who bought it get theirs!
-
Mine are scheduled for delivery Friday before 8:00
-
Got my notice last night too. A Christmas miracle.

I didn't even get a shipping notice yet. So after the New Year most likely for me
-
Mine arrived today...but I won't see them until the 25th, if you know what I'm sayin to ya. Told my wife they could go under the tree for me as another gift.
-
The GPK On Demand set they sold on September 25 just started arriving to the GPK fans the past week. This set is lightning delivery compared to that one.
-

I do not understand why it will take a whole week longer for me...…. And you didn't have to pay sales tax! Next time, maybe I'll ask you to order for me - I'd get a forwarded package from you faster than I'll get my order from Topps.
-

the initial delivery estimation by fedex of 12/26 was off by a bit for me.
It's now updated to 12/27.

I checked the tracking details, and my Wackys were in Long Island City yesterday morning, where the "unreadable" barcode was replaced, and they were then shipped to Edison, NJ. So, they're getting farther away now.......
-
Who will be the the first to receive these cards and post some sketches? This adds intrigue to to the Christmas countdown. ;)
-
Mine originated in Ft. Lauderdale and are being delivered by USPS. They arrived at my local post office at 7:59 this morning and are scheduled to be delivered today by 8PM.

similar here.
My package arrived in Houston yesterday, but it will now languish in local the FedEx system for multiple days just to ensure that it won't get delivered until next Thursday. God forbid FedEx actually delivers earlier than their made-up due dates.
-
Mine are supposedly scheduled for delivery by 8:00 PM today. We shall see.
-
I got mine at 3:45PM. I'll let my son give them to me for Christmas. He's a poor college kid.
-
A couple sketches just hit ebay. No base cards or checklists yet. It won't be long now.

Mine in Jersey haven't moved since 12:01 am. And, even worse, I just realized, once again, the street number didn't make it onto my shipping address. Last time the package was sent back to Florida......... I probably won't have my cards until next year :'(
-
so whole sets and the variations are now on ebay.
one question to Dave - what's going on with the pencil sketch cards? I take it that they're meant to emulate borderless stickers, as they all have the weirdly cut, narrow black edging.

And what's with the color sneaking into the pencil sketch? Is that an error?

No idea! I was asked to send over the drawing and to use the lettering set up I use right before printing them on my paper to paint. I make Photoshop lettering so I can have a guide to paint over.
I thought I sent them to them in B&W though.
-
My tracking still shows delivery by 800. it's 7:15......
-
Miracle of miracles - I heard a noise outside like a truck door at 7:30 this morning, and a box of Old School 7 was sitting on my porch!!
I'm very happy with the artwork, although of course I miss the kiss-cut stickers. No awesome sketches in this batch (I have another box somewhere in FedEx/USPS purgatory). Topps did much better with the pencil sets this time as far as collation - each box had either 1-15 or 16-30.
For now I have complete pencil and black lud sets, 24 different tans, and 18 different red luds for myself. I can't do much trading until the others arrive, but I do have the extra base sets for people here who wanted them - PMs have been sent. Also an extra pencil set. All in all, it's been a fun morning!!!
-
"FedEx/USPS purgatory"
LOL..... soo true!! :] :] :]
-
Mine is scheduled for "by end of day Wednesday, December 26". Timely Topps.

They might show up sooner, like my first box did! I do hope the rest show up Monday - I'm off from work and can figure out all my tans and luds and post lists of extras and needs.

Mine were waiting for me when I got home from work on Friday afternoon. Yay

Mine went from delivery by 8 yesterday to somewhere in transit to next facility...

I was fortunate that my regular carrier was in this morning sorting the mail, or it would have been sent back to Florida. The rest of my order is at the P.O. but won't be sorted until Monday morning. Fingers crossed!
-
Mine was "out for delivery" today and evidently stayed on the truck.
-
Woot! Got my set today! Topps did in fact get my new address on the package. Thanks Topps! :great:
-
Man, I must be leading a good life. I got mine on Thursday, I think. I have hardly even looked at them as the last two days have been so busy. I'm hoping to trade my luds and tan backs for a base set, but I suspect that's not enough to offer. Still, if someone ends up with lots of extra base sets and likes the back variations, please let me know.
-

I received my set late yesterday, but did not open it until today. I could not wait any longer. I needed a pick me up since once again i’m suffering with those evil kidney stones. I must say that I like this set and though many of the products at first I did not remember, I do now.

I feel your pain De-Mented. I spent an hour and a half in the ER this morning for the very same thing. It was only 2mm and felt like a rock. Hope you feel better soon.

No color sketches for me -- still shut out by Topps. None from the 1-17 albums, none from OS6 or OS7. I feel like the Red Sox pitching staff entering the 2018 World Series.

Looking at recently completed sales I see base sets going for $35 and Pencil Sets going for $80. That's $115 for a base set and pencil set with Puzzles and Checklists. Those are reasonable prices IMO.

Wow, I held off from any spoilers until I saw the set for myself. I must say this is one of the BEST sets yet! :great: :great:
Can't decide on favorites yet, but the artwork and gags are terrific. If I had to pick at the moment I would choose:
Teeth bar - Love candy bars and red-noses :] Great art and funny.
Sir Apefellow - What a design! Props to the gag writer and the art rocks!
Uhh..Wait, I can't go on because I could go on and on. ;D I keep looking at them over and over they ALL have that special Wackys feel. Thank you to everyone who worked on this set!
Might buy another set on ebay to just stick everywhere haha. Really cool set. This is why I continue to buy Old School sets!
-
More impressions:
Smirkoff - Great
Solarpain - Awesome
Shot Tomales - Good, but should the background be white?
Philthies - Great
Baron von Deadberry - Extra Awesome
Ounce - Great, didn't know this was out in the 70's
Old Gods - Awesome
Muckers - Awesome
Fantastic Clod Rods - Extra Awesome - I used to get the originals as a kid!
Chunks - Great but what is the original product?
Squirrel Gut Zippers - ? What is the original product?
All of them are fantastic. Great set. :great: :great:

Never came across Squirrel Nut Zippers in my day (NYC area) either. Probably the oddest name imaginable for a simple candy too. I imagine it’s the same as our Mary Janes, Bit O Honeys or something along those lines, either a caramel or peanut-based chewy candy.

For years I only knew it as the strange name of a band, before eventually finding out it was the name of a candy (and the band probably based theirs on it).

That candy was actually made by the same company as Bit-O-Honey and Mary Jane. In fact, Necco owned all these brands until they went out of business this past year. They auctioned off the brands a few months ago. Not sure where each of these brands ended up.

Yes, thanks for mentioning, I knew the name had entered my consciousness years ago but couldnt remember why. Zoot Suit Riot was the radio hit if I remember correctly - they charted around the same time as Smashmouth, in the late 90’s, I remember that for sure. As far as the candy, I occasionally visit a candy store that specializes in hard to find retro items, yet I’ve still never seen the dang things.

Oh no, I'm saddened to hear that NECCO went out of business. While visiting my son at college in Boston earlier this year, I drove past their headquarters. I never knew that it stood for the New England Confectionery Company.

The Aurora monster models were definitely another childhood fave of mine and I was very pleased to see the two you've done. I'd love to see your take on the other two you've mentioned. Not much text to work with, but I think you pulled off those first two fabulously.

Candy historian factcheck: Bit-O-Honey was never made by Necco. It was never under the same roof as Squirrel Nut Zippers. The most recent big owner of Bit-O-Honey was actually Nestle, who've had it for a few decades (though it underwent several oweners from the 60's through the 80's. Nestle sold off the brand about five years ago to Midwest manufacturer Pearson's, maker of Pearson's Salted Nut Roll, among other things. Pearson's still has it. :-)

Jason,
Does Pearson's still make Pearson's Nut Goodie today, which was spoofed in a previous OLDS series?

Hey David, if you still intend to do glow in the dark Aurora Monster Model OLDS Wackys, I've got ideas for names for two of them:
*Woofman (or Dogman),
*Dummy.
David,
I just thought of two more names for two more glow in the dark Aurora Monster Model Kits:
*Kink Konk,
*Dogzilla (or Goshzilla or Gollyzilla (I know that the last one's been taken, but maybe you can still use it)).
