Title: FS: Unopened Wacky Packages Packs and Boxes -- Now and at National Sports
Post by: DynamicTwo on July 26, 2018, 09:20:45 AM
As promised, here is a list of the original Wacky Packages packs and boxes that are currently for sale and will be at booth 600 at this year's National Sports Collectors Convention in Cleveland August 1 - 5. These are just part of two files that contain all of my sports and non sports packs and boxes and their prices. The first list will be released today on Net 54 but if you want a copy of both lists you can call me on 914-522-3853 or e-mail me at dynamictwo@aol.com and I will get you both lists today or as soon as I can get to it. If you have no interest in the packs and boxes, you can always say hello in Cleveland anyway. Please note that all items are raw ungraded but all of that information is in the other lists; all packs and boxes are in outstanding condition.

Enjoy -- Steve Sabow  -- Dynamictwo@aol.com ---  914-522-3853

The Series 1 Bandache pack and the Diecut Demented pack are awesome. Can't afford that kinda thing, unfortunately.

By the way, my prices are not always set in stone. I am always open to discussion except for series 1 1973 packs.

Best regards,

Steve

An 85 fold unopened series 1 pack just sold for under $300 on ebay.  Why are your packs worth so many more times what the open market just declared as the fair market value?  I continue to try to reconcile your claims on market values against actual examples of open market sales.

Under $250, even.

There was no evidence that the pack in the eBay auction was actually 1st series. The seller, who has no reputation in wackys, merely stated that. Knowledgeable bidders had no choice but to assume it could be 2nd or 3rd series. The wrapper looked very opaque and the series might not even be distinguishable in hand. Wasn’t in great shape either, though I have no idea what condition Steve’s packs are in.

Also, while this pack had no obvious red flags, I would be willing to pay more to be able to examine a pack in person. The reality is no one has faith anymore in uncertified packs. The unopened pack market is moving heavily toward PSA certification, following the booming market for sports packs. I am 100 percent certain that a high grade 1st series pack certified by PSA would sell for $1000-2000 at this point, possibly more.

Just to be clear, I think the unopened pack market is in a Catch-22 situation at this juncture. No one trusts uncertified packs, and the market is crying out for what PSA (and the now defunct GAI before them) tried to provide.

Yet no one has been able to come up with a way of encapsulating the packs without a large number of them being damaged during encapsulation and shipping. And I would submit that there is no possible way to do that safely given the nature of unopened packs that contain gum.

So the majority of advanced pack collectors in the sports hobby are holding their noses and trying to find PSA certified packs that are not already damaged....and then hoping they stay undamaged if they are being shipped. The majority of people willing to pay a lot for desirable wacky unopened product are those same people.

In case anyone thinks I’m exaggerating this problem, here are the first two images of PSA 9 Mint Graded unopened packs I just found on the internet. It makes me ill. They’re certifying super high grade packs only to ruin them 😢

worse than the Hungry Jerk 10
EXACTLY what I thought when I saw it...great minds think alike.   ;)

I would submit that it is easier to do this to a sticker than a pack...doesn't make either one acceptable, of course.

I'm no expert on unopened pack values by any stretch, but there is another obvious flaw in the price list.  A full 7th box is listed at $3,000, while 48 packs w/o a box are priced at $1,440.  By subtraction, that leaves an empty 7th box at over $1,500.  Unless some premium is being placed on the full box due to all original content not combed over for potential Grime-Heavys or something like that, this makes no sense.

The problem is if the pack has loose gum there is no way to stop it from moving around inside the pack when it’s shipped, and the razor sharp corners tear holes in the wrapper.

so how many of duo's 1st series packs are you buying at his prices....I'll make a bold prediction....ZERO!  Let me know when you have bought him out....

Even if he is implying the 7th full box has all packs originally placed in that box and the 48 packs are randomly accumulated, it is not worth $1500 premium.  I do feel it is worth some premium though.

That series 16 with a Scoot showing is a bit pricey.  You already have one of the double prints in the pack.  Even a pack with a good sticker showing in the back is worth about $300.

If you price it out that is fairly expensive in my opinion.  Say the box is worth 200, that's 48 bucks a pack.  It would still be worth some extra to get a legit full box to me.  What do you think of that price?

It felt high as ebay doesn't seem to be fetching $50 per pack but if the boxes sell, then they are under priced.  When they stop selling, you hit the ceiling.

I was at the P.S,Show this past Fri. and there was a dealer there who had a 15th box for $3,200.

Unopened material on the whole is experiencing a tremendous bull market, partially driven by breaking vintage packs (slots are sold to degenerate gamblers at a huge profit to the breakers). Wacky unopened materlal will be drawn into that trend.

They gamble on what will be in a vintage pack?  Wouldn't that be tough with Wackys since there is so often a title showing, and anyone knowing the knight move can have a good idea what else is in the pack?

I’m not suggesting they would do it with wackys. Just that the effect on unopened prices due to this phenomenon “raises all boats.”

Thanks for the link!  I had never heard of this until your posts.  Seems like sacrilege to kill a sealed pack from 64 years ago.  But, at $500 per spot for a 20 card pack, that's a lot of money.  Plus, they have the wrapper to sell, too.  Do they charge less for the first and last cards because of the gum/wax issues?

I think they may just not assign those cards or refund them if they have major issues

What bothers me about this phenomenon is that for the last five years as unopened prices escalated we were told that the value of an unopened pack is more than the value of the expected contents. That you’re paying for the rarity of the unopened pack. Now prices go up even more based on ripping the pack. Makes no sense, but as long as there are gamblers out there, look for unopened prices to keep climbing as supply dwindles and demand increases, both due to breaks.

I think too many "sellers" get hung up on the population of graded items -- especially on unopened packs.  Not everyone grades their "perfect" items, and slabbing has been known to ruin unopened packs.  Besides, how would PSA be able to tell without question that it wasn't resealed?

For example, this item was originally listed for $800.  It's the only one in population with any grade.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/113509452516

The price was lowered to $79.95 and then finally sold for $39.95.  That's still way overpriced IMHO.

With modern printing, I would expect a lot of Gem Mint 10s from a set produced in the last tens years, and I would expect a low population for a sticker that would sell for about $1.

You’re right, populations are meaningless with packs especially. So few have been graded. It’s laughable to see that a 12th series pack has only two graded 8 or higher when I have personally owned over a hundred fresh brand new looking packs. People are submitting some now hoping to cash in, but it takes 4-5 months to get them back, it really isn’t worth it unless it’s a high ticket item.

Just because it is listed at an insane asking price doesn't mean it will sell.

I know but sports packs have gone insane lately. 1971 rack packs have sold for $6000+. Non sports packs will soon follow, but only if PSA graded I fear.

You can see the 16th pack already has a small tear from the gum. Sad.
