Although we all know Wacky Packs to be the original big source of product parodies, I realized the other day where I actually saw some, which pre-dated Wacky Packs by 20+ years. It was in the original Bugs Bunny cartoons. Specifically, my favorite one, Baseball Bugs from 1946.

As seen in the backdrop, product spoofs are shown clearly all around the field. Including the iconic scene of the fielder getting his cigar pushed into his mouth by the ball with the words on the billboard saying "does your tobacco taste different lately?". This was the true introduction to product parody on a big scale and probably had a significant influence on why many of us were drawn to wacky packages. BB cartoons were very ar with kids in the early 1970's (in my neck of the woods anyway).

...and don't forget Mad magazine with it's fantastic product/ad parodies from the 50's and 60's! According to Jay, these had a huge influence on Topps producing Wacky Packages.

Also, at the end of the cartoon, BB climbs the "Umpire State" (Parody of the Empire State Building) to catch the ball and win the game against the "Gas House Gorillas".

Here is a link to the Wikipedia page for a magazine named BALLYHOO published in the 1930's that just shows one thing builds on top of another over time and progresses. This had to be an influence on those that went on to make MAD, CRACKED, NAT. LAMPOON, etc. They also produced a board/card game in the early '30s that featured some of their parody titles. Wow, these are pretty cool! Notice how "Blobasol" shaving cream was packaged in what looks like to be a toothpaste tube of some sort.
