Title: 4th of July
Post by: Baked Bears on June 29, 2018, 12:28:22 PM
So, no 4th of July set this weekend?

"Fire Cracker Barrel" ("Cracker Barrel")
"Uncle Spam" ("Spam")
"Crapola Sparklers" ("Crayola Markers")
"Pop-Zits" ("Pop-Its")
"Bald Eagle Brand Ilk" ("Eagle Brand Milk")
"Liberty's Bell Halves" ("Libby's Pear Halves")

? ? ?

"I doubt it wouldn't have taken very much effort to have assigned a few of these (or similar) 4th of July titles out to a small handful of artists a month or so ago.  Again, Topps is right on top of things, always taking the proactive stance," he said sarcastically.  (Now, come on, Topps.  Make me eat my words.)

I suppose I shouldn't complain.

Just when I thought that life couldn't get any better, Topps did graciously offer us the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to purchase the 1975 Bay City Rollers 80th Anniversary Poster!

Sniff. Sniff. Sob. Sob.  I'm drowning in tears of joy.  Excuse me while I go and pull myself together...

I give up as well.... I am not paying that kind of money for two WPs.... WHAT DON'T THEY GET!!!!!

NO OFFENSE to the artists that also do GPK - I DO NOT GAFF about GPK....... STOP THE MADNESS - They are both unique products

I think we all agree we'd like to see separate Wackys and GPK's, or if they want to mix them, give us a bigger set!

I may have had some of those Firecracker Pops when I was a kid :)  Nice!

Robert - Your part is GORGEOUS!

I wonder if they were also made aware they are only pissing us off (WP Peeps) with the mixing,,,,, Make a WP 4th Set

If they want a GPK 4th Set - Make that too - Maybe offer a break for those that want both - Just a Firecrackery Thought....

I would think so. They were made aware of it right away.

That's good - mistakes like that are annoying!  And, since the same GPK art is used for two card versions, I've always assumed the names aren't part of the painting, but are added later by computer.

Guys and gals,

Not to insult anyone here, but it seems you are all missing something.  The GPK cards are a bonus, nothing more, an added treat!  They are meant to be clothespinned to your kids' bicycle forks so they rub against the spokes and their bike makes a cool "motorcycle" sound and wins 1st place in the local 4th of July parade!

All kidding aside, well done, Robert, very well done!  (And that's exactly how I'll be eating my words, Patrick: well done!)

Granted, $15.00 a pop is somewhat pricey for the two WP (which is what it boils down to for a WP collector.)  Of course, I'd rather have five WP parodies, as opposed to the 2 out of 5 mix.  Two cards, however, are much better than no cards at all.  (Hey, Topps could have printed an exclusive GPK set, and then where would we be?)

True, I balked at the $15.00 price, however the two WP are very nice.  It is obvious that thought, care, and time were put into them. (The tattered blue ribbon is also a wonderful touch, Robert.)

If, by chance, between the 15th and 16th series, Topps had produced two cards that weren't part of any set, but rather strictly mail-order, consider how much you would be spending on them now - a tad more than $15 apiece.  Well, a similar circumstance is happening right now.  History is being made today: for one week only in 2018, Topps offered two "mail-order" WP parodies (+ 6 "spoke cards") that were never available again.  So purchase them today, and help your great, great grandchildren save hundreds of dollars a few decades from now!

Happy 4th of July!

Thanks all, for the comments. I did do the GPK as well....Thanks Baked Beards for the nice words...I did put as much as I could into those....all of them, in fact.

I understand the conflict many face with paying for cards they may not want....Wackys were my first love, but I do love GPK as well....I certainly see them as cousins...just a few steps removed from each other. But I can see how some don't.

Thanks again!

R.

So what's to be done?  Was the deal for an 8 card set?  2 Wackys and 3 x 2 GPKs?  If so, Topps should make good on it if they charged for an 8 card set.  (I would think that the GPK collectors must be furious.)

Yes, it was supposed to be 2 Wackys and 6 GPK cards (both the A and B versions of three different GPK paintings).  The GPK collectors must certainly be beyond furious, as they don't consider a set complete unless it includes all the A and B versions.  Topps may just end up sending everyone a replacement set - if that happens I hope they'll also send the Wackys, so there will be extras on ebay and maybe I'll finally find some at a reasonable price.

Did you get all A or B versions, or a mix?  I think Topps is looking at an avalanche of complaints next week, seeing as how their customers were expecting 8 cards for their $30, and they only got 5.

The GPKs that I received were 1a, 2b, and 3a.

This is an inherent problem with time limited sales where customers don't get their orders in time to order more.  In this case, I don't believe Topps meant to only include 3 of the 6 GPKs; I think it was probably a mistake that they will have to rectify.  But, this was the one thing I remember commenting about for the last Old School set with the 1 week sales window - if you didn't get all the pencil cards or special backs in your order (which were not promised), you couldn't go back and order more in hopes of getting the missing cards.

That's a tough one because these sets are designed to be in the moment sets. Reflecting a certain event like a holiday or an awards show. For Old School that's a different matter though. I did recently talk to them about having them stay on sale for at least two weeks. Will LYK what they say.

That's nice to hear, and is appreciated, but if it takes longer for the Old School sets to be delivered than the purchase window, it won't help.

Perhaps if Topps isn't prepared to fill in our missing extra cards, we can swap amongst
ourselves?

i.e. I got all "Leif Guards," no "Copper Tony" at all.
A few "Charles Coal" but mostly "Gus Grill"
and then I was evenly split with "Emma" and "Emmets"

Just called. The guy said they would send the missing cards and tried to shoo me off the phone. I said, "Wait, the Wacky Packages were scratched. What about them?". He said, "So your saying the ENTIRE PACKAGE was damaged?". I said, "No. Wacky Packages are trading cards that are also produced by TOPPS (duh?). There were two Wacky Packages in this set, and they are scratched/damaged. I paid premium dollars for these and I don't want damaged cards."

I referenced the email (incident #) and told him that I even sent a picture of the damages. I asked if those emails even get looked at. No answer, he just moved on to processing my request. Sigh.

So, they wanted the scratched Wackys back and emailed me a return mail label.

We'll see how it all turns out.

At least they sent you a return label.  Back when Old School was boxes with envelopes containing the sketch card, I got two or three that were missing the envelope.  I had to mail back the entire box, with packs, on my own dime.  So, they are improving!   :P

Why are there so many different stories being told here? Some people are getting their missing GPKs sent with no "proof" whatsoever (they were going to send mine simply because I said they were missing - the damaged Wackys turned it into a fiasco) and some have to send pictures and packing lists and such. Weird.

I told the rep on the phone this was unacceptable. That ALL orders were shorted and it was inconvenient for me to send pics for proof. He said its policy and could not be waived.

Received my missing 3 cards today, exactly 7 days after my phone call to follow up on an email that never got a response (no documentation required).

I sent an email, without response. Forwarded images several days later, no response. Forwarded packing slip images a couple days later, no response.
Called them the next day, and first thing they said is I need to send pictures.
Told them they should have them as I already sent them the week before. 2 seconds later they located the email with pictures, then immediately submitted the correction order for me. I should finally get the replacements Saturday.

Good: My replacement Wackys showed up today.
Bad: They forgot to send the missing GPKs.

Topps is garbage.

If they accidentally send you more replacement Wackys, please LMK.  I liked these, just not the price.
